FYI these don’t include anything defensive outside of fouling because Paul does not trust that part of G+.
Buck good for NE, very nice goal. Wood scored but didn’t do well on a numbers heavy counter. Jozy stumbled a ball over the line. Brian Gutierrez got to the Man City zone and cut it back for an MLS assist (Kamara flicked it on to the player behind in).
I defended the Fire for not releasing Gutierrez to the u20 WC because he had a major role for them. Then they proceed to not start him in 2 out of the next 3 matches. Set fire to that franchise.
The Revs win and keep playing their kids. San Jose has played their kids enough & released them. Plus, you have a nice stadium. Don't sell yourself too short. Chicago fails every metric.
they got the youth GK situation figured out. Lord knows we need that factory firing on all cylinders. They’re at least useful for that
Remember the old days when Alex Muyl and Mike Grella had their fan clubs here? Like we would get weekly updates on how Alex Muyl did that week.
I don't know where Miazga or Celentano belong on the depth chart, but both have been very good this year. For 4 years FCC couldn't stop the opponent from scoring. This year, we had 2 meltdowns, but otherwise it often feels like the opponent won't even get a decent chance. Those two have been pretty central to it all. I think Murphy will get a starting spot on this team before the season ends (hopefully not just because we don't get to keep Mosquera) and may have some USMNT fringe roster potential.
Celentano's got his advanced stats back up (+.15 xgs +/- per 90). Basically, he had tanked it in one game where he couldn't keep the ball out of net. You'd rather have that and be consistently strong, than consistently average to pretty good. And he's shown he can be an asset in the playoffs already. He's a calming, all around gk'er. I think he's gotten underrated again by USS & fans. He wasn't even included on the 60-man UNL roster. I presume that means he's not in contention for GC either. Don't see him on many hypothetical rosters. The team dropped the ball by not trying him nor Callendar out yet. As for Murphy, he was a guy I had some hopes for as a moderately worse version of Richards and Neal. He doesn't have quite their athleticism, smoothness, & success from younger ages. But he's in the mold and was on a good trajectory for a collegiate. I was worried he was starting to fade into the background. So that's good news he's still in Cincy's plans. The next step for Noonan and co. is to not just integrate from the collegiate ranks, and other MLS teams, but their own academy setup too. I give Cincy some leeway because they still haven't been around that long. But the clock's ticking for that excuse to run out in the next year or two. There's a couple promising guys. I expect them to really be incorporated.
I think at one point in that game, St Louis had more goals than shots on target... frustrating night. In addition to shot stopping, he's been pretty decent with his feet. Seems to have permission to just boot it when he feels he needs to and I don't think has made any mistake yet. Not always an accurate passer but easy to see him improving there. Murphy's biggest problem last year was simply not being aggressive. He'd wait on the ball which would allow an attacker to make the play first. Got beat to a few clearances that way last year. Already doing better in that area this season. Who are the promising guys coming up? I struggle with following youth teams. I know of Stiven Jimenez and Quimi Ordonez both getting some hype. Malik Pinto has played a decent bit this season and we just signed Valenzuela to a first team deal and he was on the bench this weekend.
I think you hit on them for the most part. Ordonez is the one that really should be happening more at this point, from his production and what I hear. The Brenner sale is all the more reason to integrate him. But their thinking is probably they're comfortable w/ the Badji and Santos vet depth, and they're winning. At a point though you have to make a space for academy guys who show something by trading/selling vets. Maybe it could be Vazquez after the season. But in the interim look to incorporate kids slowly to see if they warrant that kind of investment.
Jordan Morris picked up a groin injury in yesterday's match against the New York Red Bulls. Head coach Brian Schmetzer has confirmed it’s nothing serious and believes he will be back in two weeks.Morris will be out for the matches against the SJ Earthquakes (5/31) and Portland… pic.twitter.com/hmuDQoDzxe— Rave Green TV (@RaveGreenTV) May 28, 2023 What a relief! I was worried this would be yet another serious injury blow for the big guy. But it should exclude him from UNL. GC is another matter. May make him even more likely for that comp than before because they may have chosen 1 or another, and he had potential utility off the bench for the more important tourney.
Miazga is in a group outside the top 5 fighting to get more looks IMO which isn't bad. Celentano to me isn't talked about enough and thats more because of Gaga Slonina and Chris Brady being starters as u 20 players but kid absolutely should be in the conversation
This can go one of two ways… Tim Tillman, “I think Mexican teams really don’t play that tactically. It’s more or less emotional. Very much 1v1s. It’s all about fighting, all about the emotions. Of course they’ve got quality up front but if we play well I’m sure we can win over there.”📸: @TheStrikerNews pic.twitter.com/n0v0TAZQu1— Justin Ruderman (@JustinRuderman_) May 29, 2023
Why of course they are purposely bad so that their young keepers get more action and become good quicker. We should all be grateful.
Oof. Tillman gets beat in the air on a set piece to give up the first goal to León. Let's see how Cherundolo reacts. He hasn't been sitting back, playing for a tie or close loss so far. But LAFC looks a bit sluggish and is definitely scrambling. Gotta rally.
Tillman has otherwise looked okay, but it's 1-0. LAFC looks much more nervous than I expected. Rushing, forcing things. Six thousand feet and 80+ degrees doesn't help, but still, they can barely complete a pass. Getting torn up on the left defensive side so Cherundolo needs to make an adjustment here at some point.

Unfortunate for Hollingshead there. Uggghh. Soccer. I like that the Mexican fans boo Vela. That's deserved, really.
