Tim Ream player coach >> Damarcus Beasley Tim Ream will be the real coach this summer pic.twitter.com/fbdE551UOH— scuffed (@scuffedpod) May 30, 2023
And what if the players respect him...? This neglects the obvious advantage... that he is already on payroll. I don't think there's really a temp service to bring someone on for the next 2 months. Varas would have been a fine choice too, maybe he could take over the Gold Cup after U20's.
But what are you actually going to do? Try and hire a senior team head coach unfamiliar with the team and under the proviso that it's a two month job? You know who you get then -- Jason Kreis. Maybe Tab Ramos. Rush the head coaching hire of a home World Cup cycle just to get someone in the door. Here's the reality -- Callaghan is going to coach, and Varas, if still under contract, will likely join the staff. Neither Hudson nor they were going to mix up the tactics, and apparently Callaghan contributed quite a bit to the gameplans anyway. They aren't going to ask the players to do anything new. There's not going to need to be a ton of motivation for Nations League. We'll see what actually happens with the Gold Cup. It's far from ideal, but I have no idea what DeMarcus Beasley would bring to the table. Sure, they might respect his playing career, but the dude still telling them what to do is going to be Callaghan. I also have no idea why you think he was the water boy. He's been on the staff for a while. He's in the room on all the discussions.
The honest answer is that the manager doesn’t matter all that much and these two tournaments aren’t very important. Taking your time to hire a decent long-term fit makes perfect sense once you accept that premise.
The players know Callaghan very well. He has been with them since 2019. Will be fine for what is immediately ahead.
Here's the thing he's not the guy I'd want coaching the team if I could have someone else. But I think the thing is there's not really anyone else available. Varas could do the Gold Cup but the Nations League isn't really an option for him. You could bring Varas in as an assistant to help backstop Callaghan and I bet they will post U20 World Cup. It's either Callaghan, the U19 coach, or the U17 coach at this point. And Callaghan is not a nobody and has plenty of coaching experience and was an assistant on this team for the last four years. He's a much better option than someone like Beasley who has never coached in his life. He's a real coach, even if he lacks head coaching experience. He's the best of what are only less than ideal options. I too would like someone with head coaching experience but if you want that your two choices are Berhalter and Caleb Porter and that's about it.

I do not believe this thread will have any importance and I also believe nothing said here matters at all and I believe that nobody in a position to do or not do anything that really matters ever even looks at anything here. Therefore, good news for some people, I am withdrawing from this thread. My views have not changed much I just feel that there is no point in contributing to this thread as it makes no difference. My dog's choice of which tree to water has more impact than anything said here and the content is about the same as that which my dog produces.
I'm gonna place you in the Camus sector of existentialism. Maybe wearing a beret, chain smoking and cogitating. When someone asks you what you're thinking about, they regret it. No, I'm just teasing, really. You should stick around. This isn't my favorite thread either but I kind of scan it daily. There's other threads for me and probably you as well.
The Tim Tillman bit was interesting too. Very Cherundolo driven to bring him in. I liked everything the article said about his approach and he's far and away my top pick in terms of domestic candidates.
How do you do better than winning the gold cup and nations league at the gold cup and nations league? By definition another coach can only do equal or worse…
Both those finals were rather close, let's not pretend like the US couldn't possibly win more convincingly...
You are a true nihilist, based on various comments in various threads. If the choice of coach doesn't matter, if winning NL or Gold Cup doesn't matter then why are you here? In a few years, if and when AI takes over everything in the social sphere, human reactions--meaningless as they may be--will and should hold value. Yours included, of course.
I hope it goes better than the first half...LAFC got their asses handed to them for the bulk of the first 45.
