And the plot continues to get weirder and weirder. It’s being suggested rather than brutally lame duck another year or more in Oakland, or risk Oakland leaving them homeless after 2024, the A’s are exploring a temporary ground share with the Rivercats while Vegas is built (also avoids several brutally hot summers in the open air Vegas AAA ballpark). https://ballparkdigest.com/2023/05/...new-las-vegas-ballpark-sacramento-to-host-as/
Wow, they're also projecting a stadium opening in 2028. I believe that's years later than what had been discussed until now.
Rough calculations using Google Maps distance tool of PayPal Park: Including stands and field: 505ft by 485ft = 244925 square feet = 5.6 acres. So they could probably squeeze in a soccer but I didn't try to figure out the dimensions of a soccer field on a baseball field of that size.
We’ll keep in mind that 9 acres for a much larger stadium and roof complex. The smallest MLB park today is sans roof and 8.6 acres including overhangs of the surrounding streets.
I seriously doubt they would have the nerve to move the Leagues Cup Quakes games or MLS games to Vegas. I would be done with them if they did that. And Fisher could always schedule any number of Liga MX friendlies there, just like they have at Pay Pal. He doesn't need to incur the wrath of Quakes fans to have soccer there. Personally, I just don't think they would play soccer games on the baseball field.
Best part ... Several legislators wondered how the A’s justified projections of 2.5 million fans per year at a 30,000-seat ballpark–do the math and you’d see the Athletics say they’d draw at over 100 percent of capacity. (This was a misleading stat thrown out by legislators. The A’s are projecting 2.296 million for baseball–or around 100 percent of capacity–and 2.6 million for all events, including concerts. Still, projecting sellouts as far as the eye can see is a somewhat dubious assertion.)
Sounds to me like Vegas may quickly be wising up to the reality that sports venues are money sinks, hence why no other country provides the level of public support we do here in the US. I’m sure they’re talking a bath on Allegiant Stadium already.
I’m pretty sure the A’s to LV deal will be costing either Fisher or the city a lot of money but in the end, it’s inevitable that the team will move and soon. That is the sad part. I just hope Fisher ebds up selling the Quakes.
I'm assuming John Fisher owned sports teams get really high attendance, for them to be projecting sellouts forever? The Oakland A's are getting worse by the day:• 10-45 record (worst start in 120 years)• 11 straight losses & -199 run differential• Biggest stadium (56k) but least fans (8k)And games are so quiet that pitchers must turn down their PitchCom device so hitters can't hear it pic.twitter.com/xLQku6H8IM— Joe Pompliano (@JoePompliano) May 29, 2023 Here were the #MLS Week 15 attendance numbers! pic.twitter.com/sCAQeZTOQM— Eli Lesser (@EliLesserTV) May 29, 2023
Allegiant Stadium has exceeded expectations, such as being the world's highest grossing (by $) stadium concert venue in the world. It was probably still a bad deal, but the economics of a domed football stadium in a tourist city make a lot more sense than MLB's smallest stadium would.
I wanted to be as close to center as possible in the moat so I choose the aisle-less side against the suites. Turned out to be a happy change for me I did make a major mistake though... I didn't think through Quakes vs. Visitor side and didn't ask the question, so I ended up on the visitor side
how will Vegas locals feel about supporting a team that's not for them, just another tourist attraction on the strip... John Fisher reportedly has considered changing the typical home game start time if the A’s move to Las Vegashttps://t.co/14b6SeKKtG— A's on NBCS (@NBCSAthletics) May 31, 2023 4pm first pitch?Might as well make half the seats little cots, so tourists can take a nap after the pool and before they go gamble. And they’ll still be half empty. What a sad excuse for a ballpark plan. https://t.co/iWeBc9jzJB— OaklandStadiumWatch (@OakStadiumWatch) May 31, 2023 It was stated that 70% of attendance would be local (likely with day jobs)… why potentially cater to the 30%…? https://t.co/Meizq8Hy7W— Brodie Brazil (@BrodieNBCS) May 31, 2023
I’ve long said that when MLS expansion slows down, a lot of eyes are going to be directed at current MLS clubs who haven’t kept up with MLS’ ambitions.Looks like the Rapids are starting to get that treatment. https://t.co/a9d9QN5WGM— MLS Buzz (@MLS_Buzz) June 1, 2023 Just putting this out there. I'm aware our facilities are much newer than the rapids, but eventually they'll crack down on spending overall, no? New stadium and all but if the product is crap eventually the people won't bei showing up. Garber modeling MLS after the NFL I'm sure they want all stadiums nice and full. Fisher hasn't done enough to provide a reason for fans to sell out the stadium on a constant.
PayPalPark is not a problem, though. It's a great venue with easy access for fans. Colorado's stadium is crap and sits in the middle of the prairie, well outside Denver. As poorly designed as the San Jose Ultras' section used to be, it was already light years' ahead of Colorado's supporters section. Also, it appears that the focus in Colorado is on the training facilities -- to appease the players, not the fans. Maybe the Quakes could make things a little roomier, and the white tent is cheesy, but all-in-all Quakes players have it pretty nice.
And when it happens, the Quakes training ground will be a much improved facility at the SCC Fairgrounds.
No, I'm aware of all that Don. My point was more along the lines that the league is slowly, finally cracking down on teams. For now it's the crapids facilities. Eventually, maybe years down the road, the focus will be....why are you not selling out every game? The NFL stadiums are usually a sold out every Sunday. A owner like fisher will eventually be dealt with. Either play along or sell. Just saying.
I guess I'm not explaining myself correctly. Forget stadiums, training facilities. I'm looking further down the line because it's the first time I read something were the league is mandating a team to keep up with the new version of MLS. Again, as we know it, fisher will do the bare minimum within the roster. If they're fussing about training facilities now maybe in the near future it will be to put a winning product on the field so the stadiums are nice and full. Which would not only look great on tv (like the Bundesliga, premier,) but would obviously make the league more money. That's all ..I'm not knocking the Quakes facilities by any means
I’m pretty sure it’s already happening. We just don’t hear about it. There is an MLS group that’s role is to improve under performing clubs.
