An ignominious end to a very forgettable season capped by an execrable performance in Enschede. With the faintest of chances to move into second place, Ajax left everything in the changing room, with no more than a half dozen minutes of decent football. The lack of organization and just dumb mistakes continued in today's match and there was not much to write home about other than the sublime pass by Brobbey on the lone Ajax goal. PSV ended up beating AZ 2-1 to keep their ticket to the Champions League qualifiers and Ajax is looking to 'try' to make it to the Europa League group stage this summer. Worst standing since the 2006 season and the first time Ajax did not defeat Feyenoord, PSV, AZ or Twente a single time since 1963, a year before Cruyff broke into the lineup. It's safe to say that Heitinga won't return and I'm not sure there is even a role for him at Ajax right now. The long ball up the field recalls the worst of the de Boer era. Player Ratings: Rulli (5.5) - poorly served by his defense Rensch (5.5) - neither good nor bad Timber (6) - above average Hato (5.5) - struggled at times with no outlet to pass to Wijndal (5.5) - had a couple of good runs down the flank but that was all Alavarez (3) - adios muchacho after a horrible game; let's hope Dortmund scouts don't get a hold of the game film Taylor (5.5) - a couple of half hearted shots Bergwijn (6) - did put in a hard effort Kudus (5.5) - see you later and hope you get a big payday from some team Brobbey (6) - will be interesting to hear why he was subbed off when he was doing pretty well Tadic (6) - oh captain, my captain, it's time for the substitutes bench for you Klaassen (5) - do us a favor and retire Lucca (5) - addio, enjoy the trip back to Italy Berghuis (5) - had a decent try on goal that was nudged away by the foot of the keeper Bassey (NR) - on late for Timber who took hit to the head Lots of changes (I hope) coming this summer
WTF??!! Not smart Ajax player Steven Berghuis has just punched a FC Twente fan… pic.twitter.com/MsipXygbdE— george (@StokeyyG2) May 28, 2023
I'm going to lock this thread in a couple of days as there is no sense in trying to understand what went on this year other than lots of horrible defending and dropped points. There is a new thread for the 2023-24 season for talking about the future.
My understanding is Brobbey was being racially abused and Berghuis struck out at the scumbag who committed this appalling act.
Spot on sir as always. One add from me on Rensch is that he was awful and complete rubbish. His defending is so bad. He’s physically weak, does not get stuck in, is pathetically slow to the ball, and can’t play the ball forward. Constant back passes is seems. I pray he’s dumped.
Alvarez deserved a 0 today. Every move that Heitinga made today was wrong. I dislike so many of the players in this side. Blow it up. Start over. Not in Champions League anyways… time for a rebuild/recapturing of the Ajax culture.
I only wish they would make a return trip to Orlando!!!!!! I still think about seeing them that January and not realizing they would almost make it to the CL finals.
Alvarez plays hard and is easily the strongest player in the air on this pathetically deficient side, but honestly he’s pretty much shite on the ball. He will have a difficult time in a stronger, faster League if he doesn’t clean up his touch on the ball and distribution, but truthfully he is what he is. He will have difficulty when he’s pressed.
It will be interesting to see how much Ajax get for Alavarez. He is just 25 years old and is a solid defender. Based on this video he's worth €50 million
Sorry one more rant. How awful is Lorenzo Lucca? Absolutely embarrassing and brutal. Whoever decided to bring him should be fired immediately as well.
I know, right? Especially after how poorly Ajax played after coming back from Florida. That was a cool trip - I managed to get pictures with almost everyone from the squad individually including ten Hag and van der Sar. The access to the players was awesome, especially since so many people had no idea who they were. anyways, maybe we should start bombarding Ajax to ask them to come back and we can do a meet up there again!
Despite his awful yesterday's performance he was awarded the 3d place of the Eredivisie players of the year ranking by Voetbal Primeur.
IMO Timber has been the better player throughout the season. Probably those compiling the list hadn't watched enough Ajax games. On the other hand this is normal - lists like this one represent the opinion of one or a group of persons and are therefore inherently subjective. I'm always taking them with a pinch (or two) of salt.
From @Orange14 weekly assesment I got the impression/memory that Alvarez most of the times was better rated than Timber, but I can be wrong.
probably because Timber suffered often from having a lousy cb partner while Alvarez was more often in the midfield?
