Edit: Come to think of it, I have spent the day grading Legal Research and Writing assignments. I am now convinced all of my students are, technically, human. If my students were bots, some of them of them would be better writers.
That's depressing. In my limited time trying ChatGPT it seems very capable of churning out words, but mostly in a content for content's sake kind of way. There is zero artistry in the product. And the bot cannot seem to count words at all.
It was a joke. But the "churning out words, but mostly in a content for content's sake" seems somewhat apt, as the semester ends next week and students are pumping out assignments left and right. I actually have a few students who are very good writers and one who is an exceptional writer. Mostly, it is the five hours I have spent grading the same things.
I had developed about 7 pages of notes on a project and cut and pasted the entirety of it into Chat GPT and asked it to create a summary -- I asked it to regenerate a couple times -- what it came out with was more or less the same, but the value was it was able to coherently synthesize those notes into something I could use as an outline -- maybe not quite a complete "first draft" but enough that I didn't have to waste a few hours doing it myself.
Interested in hearing how more people are using this. For me I did a trip to the Bordeaux region in France and asked ChatGPT to recommend the best sites for a vinophile to see and organize some itineraries for tours. Wasn’t perfect but saved me a couple of hours of working my way through guide books and travel websites. A nephew of mine is interested in getting started in a particular industry and asked for suggestions on some of the best areas to begin a career in and learn the basics. ChatGPT quickly spit out six suggestions with pros and cons of each area. It’s a great sounding board as long as you keep in mind it’s just spitting out patterned text strings and has no intellectual depth.
I’m guessing you haven’t tried it yet. It’s actually very cool if you use decent prompts. And with the continual disclaimer that there is no intelligence behind the process, despite what it seems like the casual reader. Edit: just thought of another example I just saw. A retired schoolteacher I know asked ChatGPT to review a Wikipedia article on a particular topic and then generate a 10 question multiple-choice exam. She was pretty impressed with the speedy result even though, as a former high school teacher, she is very skeptical of the technology and how it will impact the educational system.
Honestly the longest stuff I write now are investigative reports, which if I entered details Chat GPT might respond with "WTF bro".
Sounds like the type of thing where accuracy could be important; not ChatGPT’s strength. I just looked back through the thread and I didn’t see a link so I’m adding this here in case anyone wants to try out ChatGPT.
Too many stupid folks are makin' the decisions Too many backward folks are stealin' all the air But now we got the chance to take it back The things we've done with Chat (the things we've done with Chat) Like drivin' out of state for a flush, but ya still have to rush 'Cause you're feeling like democracy is dying And a cop has all his weight upon your neck You think you're gonna wake up But you're not asleep- so make up Ooooooh, they'll lynch your mama Ooooooh, conservatives Ooooooh, they chain your children To a waaaaalllll
I saw this as I wandered in Facebook, It sounded interesting but Facebook doesn’t let me copy photo or copy and paste text, so I screen shot it. So it’s in 2 parts, sort the conjunctions and it’ll make it look less of a ransom note. It didn’t go any further than this. I’ll look for his answer.
My son wrote a detailed letter asking for a pay raise Plugged it in “Make the following text more sophisticated.” The output was very impressive. They gave him a 1k bonus and asked him to wait till July. Not a bad consolation
Just found my parking options for a meeting. Minor use case, but I do think the outputs as natural language is superior to ordinary search for this kind of mundane stuff
How did you do that, @The Jitty Slitter ? I'm finding it to be a better search as well, but not for anything recent. I keep getting this message if I try to ask more recent info: As an AI language model, I don't have real-time data or access to current salary information. My knowledge was last updated in September 2021. However, I can provide some general information based on historical trends. Edit: Maybe you just asked about parking garages or somesuch. Do Germans even do the whole parking garage thing?
ChatGPT: US lawyer admits using AI for case research [BBC NEWS] A New York lawyer is facing a court hearing of his own after his firm used AI tool ChatGPT for legal research. A judge said the court was faced with an "unprecedented circumstance" after a filing was found to reference example legal cases that did not exist. The lawyer who used the tool told the court he was "unaware that its content could be false".
Yeah, the news is going to be full of stories of people using ChatGPT without checking accuracy. Most of the people I work with are now using ChatGPT as part of their normal work process. I’d guess BS is going to be far behind on LLM developments. But for anyone interested, the Reddit discussion is amazing.
I'm pretty sure a student used ChatGPT to write an assignment about Easter Island's written script called rongorongo. The assignment was not a research project and was simply about identifying patterns from a sample I provided and speculating on a few aspects of it. The point of the assignment was not to "get the right answer" (it's undeciphered still) but to better understand the process of deciphering prehistoric written scripts. In her response, she provided information that is not generally known (unless you are extremely well read on the topic) and was not relevant to the assignment. When I asked her about how she knew that information she replied that she always does research on things that interest her. I told her that was great but she still needed to cite her sources. As such, I asked her to provide me with her actual sources. She withdrew from my class very soon after.
