Absolutely tremendous! Gracia was brought on as Marsch's replacement to finish out the season, of course, so how were his results against Manchester City, Newcastle, West Ham, and Tottenham in May?
I think so. They just looked like a different team under Marsch. Sure, they weren't getting results, but it's hard to say they weren't UNLUCKY. After he left, they progressively started looking worse and most of the results they got felt LUCKY. I know there's a component of this that's purely metric based, but we've all seen enough soccer to know the difference between a team that believes it can compete and one that is broken. (And I want to add, it felt to me that firing Marsch was a reaction to 'fan sentiment' - always a risky thing to gamble on).
I feel like the real turning point was Tyler Adams getting hurt. If he stays healthy I think they’re probably in a different place.
Leeds fired Marsch and start setting records! Getting pummeled by the likes of not just Arsenal and Liverpool, but also Crystal Palace and Bournemouth, is truly remarkable. Tyler Adams is great, but his absence didn't singlehandedly create the worst defense in Premier League history. Leeds have now set a record for the most Premier League goals conceded in a single month 😳 pic.twitter.com/8MNUFGs3uO— ESPN UK (@ESPNUK) April 30, 2023
yes the photo in the tweet is of the gk Meslier. I guess you can't post a picture of 'no Adams' so Meslier suddenly got a lot worse instead. Gotta get those tweets out. Rockin' Robin.
Well, who's going to win the Tyler Adams sweepstakes? Somebody's going to be able to grab themselves a real quality player for a relative bargain.
For what it's worth the 4 games under Big Sam was enough for some on Marching On's message board (Leeds fan forum) to be somewhat complimentary of Jesse. They still aren't fans of him but a decent amount seem to have the attitude of "at least under Jesse we looked like we were trying things" I'll also say this separate if Jesse, but the moment Leeds hired Big Sam was the moment I rooted for them to get relegated and I think most fans for Leeds saw that he's basically an ego maniac that wants to tell you how great he is while playing Uber defensive... which Leeds doesn't have the players for. All you have to know is Leeds needed to win scoring 3 goals today and Sam went with 6 defenders starting... and they gave up a goal within 2 minutes
Over the last two Premier League seasons, Leeds were outscored by their opponents by 0.44 goals per game on average when managed by Marsch, but they were outscored by 1.20 goals per game when not managed by Marsch. In fact, out of the 5 managers Leeds has had over the last 2 years Marsch was the only one who didn't get outscored by at least 1 goal per game. So it seems like Marsch was a pretty good manager leading a really bad team.
this thread is full of nonsense, but cmon- one month and premier league history are two very different units of time.
Fascinating that in the 18 matches after Marsch was fired, Leeds gave up 44 goals (2.44 per match). That's actually a worse rate of goals allowed than Swindon Town in 1993-94, and also the infamous Derby County season, the worst two defensive records in Premier League history (2.38 and 2.34 per match). Sadly not just one month.
Interesting, but I’ll bet the correlation between results and Adams’ health is stronger. That’s probably Marsch’s biggest positive, maybe even above avoiding relegation last year: signing Adams
In the 6 league matches Adams played after Marsch was fired (before his injury) Leeds GAA was considerably better than it was in the previous 20 (1.33 v 1.7).
Your argument falls apart since Marsch also coached in the 2021-22 season. The great Bielsa had the team on a pace for goals allowed that was just short of the Swindon Town and Derby County records (60 goals in 26 matches). So a moderate improvement over the post-Marsch Leeds defensive record. Marsch inherited a defense in collapse. Tyler Adams was 6 months in the future, and he still stemmed the bleeding. Why is it that all of the Leeds managers except Marsch were so defensively atrocious, even the great Bielsa? But this is actually quite enjoyable, I've never seen iad_22201 so continuously have to compliment an American player.
Yeah as much of a fiasco as post Jesse life was for Leeds, the Leeds defensive issues have more to do with Tyler getting hurt. Again though Leeds firing Jesse wasn't the issue as much as it was quite clear they had no plan on what to do after firing Jesse... and having seen how Big Sam acted with West Brom I knew he wasn't gonna save Leeds nor would he have if he showed up earlier. At this point he's just an arrogant geezer who likes to hear himself talk.
Your continued use of the interim period is interesting up to a point, but in all honesty, feels more like a talking point from a politician than a discussion.
No, it really doesn't. In fact it gets even stronger if you want to bring the 2021-22 season into the discussion. Leeds under Bielsa in 21-22 with Kalvin Phillips in the lineup allowed 17 goals in 12 matches (15 points). Leeds under Bielsa in 21-22 without Kalvin Phillips allowed 45 goals in 14 matches (8 points). Phillips returned from injury relatively shortly after Marsch was hired that season and played in the final 8 matches (that coupled with a stroke or two of great luck immediately after Marsch's hiring and before Kalvin's return and Leeds did just enough to stay up that season...allowing 19 goals in those 12 matches). If you want to go back to Leeds wildly successful 2020-21 season, Phillips missed 9 matches. In those 9 matches Leeds took 6 points and conceded 1.9 GPG. In the other 28, 53 points and 1.25 GAA. Looks to me like no matter who was managing Leeds, they needed a healthy and competent DM in their squad.
Time for a weekly Jesse rumor A lot of USMNT fans would like to see Jesse Marsch get the gig.AS Monaco may try to land him first. From our @Jon_LeGossip https://t.co/kWYGEn4llH— Roger Gonzalez (@RGonzalezCBS) May 29, 2023
I feel like he’s made it in Europe despite the Leeds firing given how often he’s been up for other jobs since.
While Marsch clearly isn’t perfect and did not make many adjustments, he wasn’t close to the biggest reason why Leeds went down. That honor goes to Bamford and Meslier. When your striker can’t kick the ball into the ocean from the beach and your keeper can’t catch a cold on a crowded subway, your margin of error is pretty small. But don’t tell that to Leeds fans scapegoating McKennie and Aaronson.
