Just scanning Italian social media over the Piton news and it looks like Mancini is getting roasted again.
Antonio Candreva just scored another beauty for Salernitana. I hadn’t watched many of their games other than the last few but I’m betting his strong play and experience has helped them avoid relegation. Aside from 36 years of age, if there was a tournament to be played this summer and I were Mancini, I’d easily pick him. Honestly, looking at his current form, I haven’t seen anyone on Italy who is playing like he has been.
Yeah, it's a shame about these older players. They always seem to shine in an odd or non-World or Euro Cup years. I recall Conte saying he would pick Di Natale if there was a tournament one season. Then the next season comes, they get too old or out of form and they end up missing out.
Candreva on the national team now would just be robbing a spot to a younger player who needs the time and experience. Besides Candreva doesn’t have the qualities Mancini is looking for right now: 1. He’s Italian 2. Plays in Serie A Italy and not Serie A Brazil
The list of call-up fon Nation League Goalkeepers: Gianluigi Donnarumma (Paris Saint Germain), *Alex Meret (Naples), Guglielmo Vicario (Empoli); Defenders: Federico Baschirotto (Lecce), Leonardo Bonucci (Juventus), Alessandro Buongiorno (Torino), *Giovanni Di Lorenzo (Napoli), Alessandro Florenzi (Milan), Federico Gatti (Juventus), Leonardo Spinazzola (Roma), Rafael Toloi (Atalanta ), Midfielders: Bryan Cristante (Roma), Davide Frattesi (Sassuolo), Jorginho (Arsenal), Manuel Locatelli (Juventus), Lorenzo Pellegrini (Roma), Matteo Pessina (Monza), Marco Verratti (Paris Saint Germain), Nicolò Zaniolo (Galatasaray) ; Forwards: Domenico Berardi (Sassuolo), Federico Chiesa (Juventus), Wilfried Gnonto (Leeds), Ciro Immobile (Lazio), *Giacomo Raspadori (Naples), *Mateo Retegui (Tigre), Mattia Zaccagni (Lazio). * in the event of official commitments with their club, the players indicated may defer their arrival at the training camp
Scalvini would have been of great use for the U20 (along with the others who are missing like Ndour, Miretti, Fabbian. Coppola, Volpato, Fazzini, etc.....)
Zaccagni and Zaniolo? That's a surprise. Grifo dropped also. Shame no Inter players on the team. Barella and Bastoni are really hitting form right now
The Inter players have the Champions League final and since this year the Nation League is not needed for the Euro qualifiers…
Gnonto is so overrated sorry to say. Definitely not good enough to be skipping U21, U20 levels IMO. Favouritism like this is blatantly obvious and detrimental to the team overall. Players notice this. Orsolini should get the call over Berardi, who is too slow for international football. Scalvini and Tonali are going to be on the U21 team. Toloi is a joke, doesn't even have the decency to reject the call. Romagnoli did more in his last call up than Rafy has ever done.
Zaniolo was a great move. Pafundi could have easily been not called as he has shown nothing at high levels yet. And Retegui remains to be seen
Guys I am a bit confused! Players such as Bastoni, Barella, Di Marco etc won’t be called even after CL final? Also, who plays at left back besides Spina? I know Buongiorno and Baschirotto can play there but they are both central defenders actually!
it could be that he calls them later, but I think he wants to save them after a tiring year and to try out some players (see Baschirotto)
The idea is to convince Udinese to speed up Pafundi's entry into the first team in adult football, if we wait for Sottil at this time he would still be playing with Udinese's U17s.....
He should be on the Euro Under 21 side in June instead. He wasnt at the WC under 20 cause Leeds were in a relegation battle. Its more important for Italy to win an Under 21 tournament than Nations League. They haven't won since 2004, with De Rossi and Gilardino
Sky Sport says “ Italia, i convocati di Mancini per il pre-ritiro in vista della Nations League” Maybe he will call Inter and Fiorentina players later as now its only who can take part in this 5 day training session
I never understood why they can't play for both. I recall an 18/19-year-old CR7 playing in both the Euro and Olympics for Portugal in 2004. If he could do it, I'm sure anyone else could.
I'm never going to argue that Italians needs to play more, but these actions are always very presumptuous by Mancini. Because he is telling other coaches "I know what's best for your team." It's not his duty to be a DS for the entire table of Serie A. He has had also some flops like Canellieri who did next to nothing all year. Zerbin also.
Yeah, DiMarco has been outstanding this year. He's be a starter along with Barella and Bastoni but they are obviously focused on other matters right now. I'm not a big Acerbi fan but he's played well too this year.
