The games are coming at us at a furious pace these days.
This the third game in 8 days and 7th game this month (with another yet to play).

One thing is for certain, we can always count on New England NOT to win MLS Cup.
Since 1996, they have consistently failed to "win the big one."
They have made it to the finals 5 times, losing them all (3 times to LAG and 2 times to Houston).
In fact, they have one US Open Cup (2007) and one Supporter's Shield (2021) to their name.

While they may not have been as consistently bad as the Fire, year in and year out lately, at least we have some hardware to show for our efforts (at least for those of us old enough to remember).

In US Open Cup play this season, while the Fire are flying, New England lost to the Pittsburgh Riverhounds in the Round of 32.

    In MLS:
The Fire actually have the edge in the all time record between the teams: in 69 matches played, the Fire are: 27W-18D-24L.
Remember when "The Fire have the all time edge against..." was something we could say regularly? Not any more.

    This season:
The Fire are 14th in the East, on 15 points from 13 games. All of the ties from "winning position" really hurt.
New England are 3rd in the East, on 24 points from 13 games. Matt Reis' mom must be proud of her bastards.

Amazingly, New England does not have a player this season with more than 3 goals scored.
They have been winning based on a stingy defense, with only 14 goals conceded in 13 matches, and 4 of those coming in a 4-0 drubbing by LAFC in week three. In 10 of 13 matches, they have conceded 1 or 0.
There have been cracks in that defense as of late, though. After going unbeaten in 8 matches (after the LAFC thumping), New England have conceded 5 goals in their past two games, 3-0 loss to Philadelphia and 2-1 loss to Miami.

Either this is the time for the Fire to heap more misery on the losers from a region and not a city, or the Revolution will be pissed and just wallop Frank Klopas' team.
I am going with the former.

So on to the game tonight. The Fire are without the tragically unhip Chris Mueller (for a young guy, he really is unhip) who underwent season ending surgery this week trying a hipness implant (or, at least, hip surgery). Maybe he will be hip next season and not boycott Pride night (I know, we do not know for certain that he did). The injury does explain his lackluster MLS play this season; well, we hope so.

The Fire are 3-1-1 in all competitions in five games under Klopas. They will be without Mueller, Dean, Teran (no update about his return), and F Navarro (out for stupidity from last game).
We will not be treated a Herbers start at CDM again, as he is out on yellow card accumulation. Oh, joy.
Maybe Torres starts and we go with four attack minded midfielders and one CDM.

I wonder if we stick aging, but effective Kei Kamara (he was New England's leading scorer in 2016-2017) or the less aging, and slightly less effective Kacper Przybyłko at forward. Why not both?

Like the Fire, New England have been hit with an injury bug this season: with seven players listed as out for Saturday night’s game: Dylan Borrero (ACL surgery), Gustavo Bou (left leg), Brandon Bye (left shoulder), Nacho Gil (right leg), Henry Kessler (hamstring surgery), Maciel (left Achilles), and Tommy McNamara (left leg).
Unfortunately, Revolution's top scorer, DP, and 2021 MLS MVP Carles Gil will be available to play tonight.

Wouldn't it be nice if the Fire had a Designated Player who end up as MLS MVP? Well, we can dream that our much heralded and promised DP9 will join us in June, turn our season around, set the league "on fire," and win the Landycakes Award in only half a season of play.

Prediction: Fire 2-1, Shaqiri scores his first of the season.

So I guess Carles Gil and Matt Polster will probably be playing for the Revs and somehow I forgot over in the news thread that Fede Navarro is suspended a match for the two yellow card/red card against Atlanta so he's out in addition to Herbers. I think if I were Frankie I'd put Pineda and Gaston Giminez in the double pivot and Omsberg with either Czichos or Burkes at CB if the Czichos needs rest for the Open Cup.

Honestly I'd be thrilled with a draw this evening.

As few goals as that team has given up this season, is it a practical plan to park a bus for 90 and go for the 0-0 tie?

(On the assumption that we run out a notably rotated squad.)

Play for counters and bank on something stupidly good happening.

Suggestion for lineup for tonight- 3-4-2-1. Starting lineup 3 CBS- Pineda, Czichos, Souquet Wingbacks- M Navarro, MHS
DM- Gimenez. CM -Torres AMs- Gutierrez, Shaqiri. ST- Kamara Halftime- Rotate out- Czichos, Shaqiri and Kamara
Give them some rest. Would love to see Torres look good at this position after training for it in the spring. What is your thinking?

It's a rarely known fact that ancient Romans along Hadrian's wall received a case of Lone Star once a week and permission to drink it by their detached garages.

Dare I say TWO up top? Guti sitting and Selassie and Torres on the outside wing postions. Pineda holding with Gimenez and Burks and Omsberg at CB.

This page says Selassie is technically a wing back in bank of 4
    https://www.chicagofirefc.com/news/lineup-notes-chicago-fire-fc-at-new-england-revolution-x2286

EDIT 1: Sorry misread that. Yes 3-5-2
    • The two center-mids are flanked by Miguel Navarro on the left and Maren Haile-Selassi on the right.
    • Behind the midfield is a three-person backline of Kendall Burks (right), Mauricio Pineda (center) and Wyatt Omsberg (left).
    EDIT 2: I guess that's a 3-1-4-2 of sorts?

Pretty much everyone has gone back to playing a form of W-M just like when I was a kid. It's pretty funny to see things come full circle as it was W-M then when I was a kid Germany won the World Cup with Beckenbauer as a sweeper and the diamond 4 back started to be a "thing". It's gone through so many iterations from a "Stopper" to be a "Holding Mid" to be a double pivot through the Tiki-Taka years and 6 midfielders and false 9s back to the W-M. The more things change the more they stay the same.

    I like it!

Kamara and Gutierrez to come around the 55 minutes mark to stretch the defense.
    Czichos to come if/when needed.

One thing I don't like is Burks starting. He should not be on the team. Come on, young man, prove us wrong.

Teran being out really hurts us.

Honestly good with this lineup for tonight all things considered even though I do not think Burks is much (hope I am wrong).

I remember hearing rave reviews about Burks in the academy but had not ever seen him play myself enough to know. Perhaps he just needs some minutes for the game to slow down at this level? It's going to be a matter of adjustment as well as confidence. We know Czichos is playing hurt and with Teran out and Fede on a red card and Herbers on yellow suspension, Pineda's flexibility coming handy. Hopefully they can get the job done.

Did anyone see the Revs lineup? I did not. Wondering if Carles Gil is injured or in? He was questionable I thought?

    Perfect day in Northern Wisconsin.
Perfectly sunny 77, but, damn, the mosquitoes are bad already.

Get down to 46 and clear to tonight.

    In the 80's all week.

I was able to move a lot of the branches. Still have to remove two uprooted trees and cut back all the broken crabapple branches. That ice storm in December did crazy damage and I am still finding stuff.
