Does anyone have any information on this year's set of trading cards from UD? The only information I've seen so far is this blurb, from the April-shipping issue of Previews: 2005 Upper Deck MLS Soccer features one foil 'Freddy Adu Rookie Flashback' insert per pack, guaranteeing collectors at least one card of this superstar in every pack. Look for jersey cards, and hand-numbered autographs are a hobby exclusive and will fall roughly three per case. One of the main drivers of this set is Freddy Adu, the 14-year-old soccer star who had a terrific first season for DC United. 5 cards per pack. 24 packs per box. I have to admit, I'm not terribly enthused by the prospects of a foil rookie flashback Adu card in every single pack. Do we really need flashbacks to Freddy sitting on the bench and whining to the ref from just a few months ago?
A card store proprietor indicated to me that he is not expecting the set out until April/May. I am surprised about the Adu in every pack. How many of those do you need?
they should've made the Adu card a rarity, to entice kids to buy more just like all of those other card game suckered the little tykes in....ok i admit it in the 3rd grade i was pretty damn hyped about pokemon, but still go with what works, make him the sought after card that everyone's looking for because they think his rookie will be worth a good deal when he's close to the top of world soccer in a couple years *fingers crossed*
I was a total baseball card head in the late 80's early 90's. This past christmas I threw out a ton of the common cards. I was one of the kids hooked into buying more by the prospect of a Ken Griffey rookie card. Do you know those are worth nothing now? Damn, how times change. I quote thepundit because he must be young as I was hooked on Garbage Pail kids in the 3rd grade.
Does anybody know where you can find them around Atlanta? Never seen them but wanted the cards last year.
I was looking around on http://www.upperdeck.com/ today. Put your pointer over the Sports Trading Cards header and select Upper Deck Collection. Click on New Releases and scroll down to the bottom. There you'll see the 2004 MLS collection and you can view every card. It is actually a cool feature of the site. No word on where you'll find info on the upcoming releases.
I tried last year to find the MLS trading cards but never had success. I checked the Wal-Marts, Targets, etc. but none of them ever carried them. I even sent an e-mail to Upper Deck to ask specifically what stores carried them in my area but to no avail. I'm really not that interested in searching for them this year. If they are around and easily accessible I will buy them but the effort is not worth it. It's sad since my son was really looking forward to collecting them. Oh well.
Try Mark Wallis at www.soccercards.com It remains a mystery to me why the league makes it so difficult for us to give them our money.
Mark has the 2004 cards. One box with 120 cards is $70. Yes, $70. That seems a little steep and it isn't even the entire set. I'll wait until they get a little more mainstream.
Thanks for the link. They have an error card. Ricardo Clarke is pictured on an Eddie Pope card near the very end of the set.
Yeah nice link. He might be the biggest and only soccer dealer but he shouldnt charge $70 that would be very steep by baseball standards. Most MLB boxes go anywhere from 27.99 to 59.99
True enough. Still, if it's the only option -and it's only once in great while.... You can always look around. There use to be a local guy that carried them and since I was about the only one who bought any, I got some great deals "just to get rid of them". Unfortunately, he doesn't bother with them anymore.
My feelings EXACTLY!!!! They're missing out on so much money due to their lack of even trying to sell merchandise!!!!!
Yeah, I had "THE ONE". That was probably worthless after one week as there were like 3 different corrections made. For those that don't know, the knob of the bat had f..k face written on it and the bat was mysteriously held just right for the picture so it was easy to read.
By the time it gets mainstream, the cards will truly be worthless. Now would be the time to get these cards....they likely aren't as mass-produced as the major sport counterparts. I'll pass on these anyway, plenty of other things to collect....namely autographed 8x10's as I found a great web site for 8x10's and the players are so fan friendly.
The value of 'error cards' is based upon scarcity. In many cases, errors are never corrected, or are corrected after a large number of them have been corrected and aren't worth very much. Actually at time, if the correction is made late in the printing run, the corrected card ends up being more valuable. (I think the Beckett prices on the Ripken card (with a profanity printed on the end of his bat in the original) have some of the "corrections" valued higher than the original error card.
Perhaps someone can check to see what the process is to get the cards made. Does the league have to front all of the money for production beforehand, or does a company like UpperDeck take all of the risk?
Exactly...in fact, the Ripken card had multiple corrections which included a box over the profanity, scribbling over the profanity and I believe another correction if not two. One of these corrections was so limited, it became the valuable card and the profanity card really became just another common card.
