Fun little blog post that reference pro/rel. trigger warning: this guy is a liberal but this particular post doesn’t have any politics. It’s a one minute read https://jabberwocking.com/china-almost-has-the-key-to-great-social-media-apps/
The 4 clubs currently plying their trade in League 1 that are former Champions:- Sheffield Wednesday (3 times) Ipswich Town (1 time) Derby County (2 times) Portsmouth (2 times) The 7 clubs currently in the Premier League that have never been Champions:- Bournemouth (highest ever finish 9th) Brighton (highest ever finish 9th) Brentford (highest ever finish 5th) Fulham (highest ever finish 7th) Crystal Palace (highest ever finish 3rd) West Ham (highest ever finish 3rd) Southampton (highest ever finish 2nd) Both Fulham and Brighton might get their highest ever finish this season.
Is anyone seeing the US vs El Salvador game and paying attention to the attendance in a small MLS stadium? I would say El Salvador probably has around 40% of the fan base there. Pro/Rel advocates always say that "communities would stand behind their team if there was Pro/Rel". We don't even have enough support for our NATIONAL TEAM at home! Thinking Pro/Rel will get communities hyped up are just pipe dreams.
Some of that is the ridiculous prices the USSF charges for tickets, some of it is game fatigue (the USSF tends to go to the same venues) and some is because our country is melting pot of cultures and other cultures have a stronger connection with the game.
This is a good point also as to why soccer is popular here in the US but not domestic soccer. Majority of soccer fans in the US don't care about domestic soccer nor would they care if we have Pro/Rel or not.
Always finding reasons as to why USMNT games aren't packed; price, location and/or day of week. How much does Mexico charge per game here in the US that they fill up NFL stadiums? Not saying USSF might not be over pricing but it seems that every single time USMNT plays I always see "reasons" as to why fans didn't show up. I'm sticking to my theory that USMNT fan base is very very small (but loud on social media) and that the casuals come out of the woodwork every 4 years it seems. Chivas had a mid week game in Avaya Stadium and it was packed. America played in LA too. Being mid week didn't seem to affect their attendance but then again I don't know the price of those games. Outside teams have no problem attracting fans to stadiums, MLS/USL/USMNT do. No, Pro/Rel won't fix it.
I’m only a casual USMNT, those prices would put me off (especially 3 years before the next World Cup) even though I go to most Rapids games. Also, many Rapids fans are not USA fans, which is a reason the Rapids are more unifying than national teams are for Colorado soccer fans. Also, I was barely aware of this international break, especially as MLS played on. It was only a little irritating there was no European club soccer in the morning. Finally, the expat situation is different, if your rare chance to celebrate your country and culture brings family out of the woodwork, and an occasion is born even if the game is not important. I see barely a tangential connection to pro/rel in all this.
Indeed. Just as the fact that 84k turned up for England's recent qualifier isn't an argument in favour of pro/rel.
What would it take to draw 84k USMNT fans to a stadium at home? My guess is the 2026 WC but any other game and/or tournament? Sure, Pro/Rel has nothing to do with this but it just shows the "interest" there is for domestic soccer here in the US with our leagues/national team.
Yes, but not even then, as the largest venue is 82K, and pretty much any opponent will have a substantial presence. The support for the USMNT is wide but shallow and really only shows up in numbers for major events and/or big-time opponents. Anyway, pro/rel...
The 2021 Gold Cup final (USA-MEX at Las Vegas) drew 61k spectators. At the 2022 World Cup qualifier, the USA-CAN match at Nashville drew 43k spectators.
Notts County women just won promotion to the fourth tier of the women's pyramid. You could sort of call them a phoenix club.
Three more promotions and they can play with the big girls in the WSL. Speaking of the WSL, crowds are up 267% this season.
Wasn't that a big majority of Mex fans? They always show up thus why MNT always plays here in the US.
That "spreadsheet" is a bit of a stretch to put all of that on MLS. I'd like to know how many clubs have started since MLS came to be.......
