I followed Jonathan Klinsmann with the Cal Bears of UC Berkeley in 2015 and 2016 and he was pretty dominating in college. Unfortunately, as he was always called away for international duty, he didn’t really play in that many games and ended up leaving school after only his second year. He was a good GK at the college level but not so sure how he is doing with the pros. His Cal Bears and LA Galaxy predecessor, David Bingham was/is a much better keeper in my opinion and he outshined him last Saturday in the Portland -LA game. Having a famous dad and/or last name I'm sure has and will continue to help him and his career.
https://www.foxsports.com.au/footba...l/news-story/9ae6e4c570b0c56d69d76a984dc5b8ee This story of every team contributing to pay for Lionel Messi's salary doesn't seem plausible. If anything you would think MLS would look to Apple to do some kind of deal with the amount of new subscriptions he might generate after signing. They would seem to profit big time if he signed with the league.
Especially since with MLS's scheduling there's no guarantee that whatever team Messi would play for would even play in a given team's stadium. Why would San Jose want to pay for Messi to visit LA, Minnesota, Seattle, and the Eastern Conference but never the Bay Area? How much would they really benefit from that?
Just as I posted last week, I hope Messi doesn't come but now with this new scenario, I think it is even more wrong and unfair. .
I know it is not direct payment and DP and transfers and all the other arcane rules of MLS mean it is really convoluted, but don't all teams essentially pay the salaries of the players in a single entity league?
That is the initial reason why in 1995, original NASL San Jose Earthquakes owner Milan Mandaric refused to invest in the MLS single entity structure although he planned to. He didn’t want to pay for another’s teams’ success which lead to the detriment of his own club. In retrospect, I can’t say I blame him and he was right.
That's a fair way to think about it, but this seems like it will be an additional payment above the standard X% of ticket sales and such that owners send to the league. Which means we're haggling over the price, not the act, but it still seems like a stretch. (And in the case of DPs, the salaries are paid by their team owners, not the league)
Because with the Apple deal if they exceed the threshold they get paid. Lets say hypothetically the threshold is 5 million paid subscriptions averaging 70 dollars for the year. That's Apple walking with 100 million not counting any other revenue generated. Not shabby but they have a chance to move that number world wide and Messi is one of the few players that could do that on his own. If the rumor of 60/40 past the threshold is accurate and they achieved 7 million subscriptions, that is 56 million more for MLS teams. All the other revenue he would create is the icing and not the subscription cake.
