I don't think we even know what cities are likely to host, do we? We may be assuming BA but a tournament like this might generate much more appeal in the west/northwest of the country where there isn't much else to do (lol) and the stadiums aren't so huge. Santiago del Estero, for e.g., has a new stadium that seems perfect for youth WCs. And/or maybe Salta or San Juan. Then the "cold" and humidity would be a non issue.

The countries who express interest in hosting the U20 WC were Argentina, Peru and Qatar. Don't be mad with Argentina for being fast or being interested, if some european country, China or the US would have shown interest FIFA would give it to them probably

    No one is mad.
Just feel sorry for teams that were more worthy of being in the tournament.

Let's be honest. In hindsight, anything is better than Indonesia hosting and having to watch Indonesian football. Aside from the racist stance that led to this mess, wasn't there just a massive, deadly stampede at a football match there recently?

They also hosted the U-20 qualifiers for the previous youth World Cup and the attendance for some of the matches were in the dozens. Not dozens of thousands. Dozens! Including 58 for a quarterfinal match. Even the final only drew some 3,000.

That Indonesian stampede occurred 5 days before Argentinian police fired both rubber bullets and tear gas against footballs fans in a major metropolitan area. I believe a fan was killed as well.

    Indonesia - https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2022...football-stampede-caused-by-tear-gas-minister
    Argentina - https://www.reuters.com/lifestyle/s...d-players-forced-off-due-tear-gas-2022-10-07/

Same cause in both scenarios: police force acting violently against civilians.

    It's a small world, ain't it?

I don't know why officers are still allowed to fire tear gas at huge crowds that are in a confined space. Seems like the incident in Buenos Aires would have amounted to nothing if no tear gas and rubber bullets were used. Probably the same holds for the incident in Indonesia.

Yes, one dead (because of a previous cardiac condition) vs 131. Totally the same.

The last time there was a stampede incident in Argentina in any way similar to the one of Indonesia was in 1968. As it was seen, even the most rudimentary stadiums like Gimnasia's still have enough escape routes so stampedes like that don't happen.

They didn't fire in a confined space, they did it outside. The wind then carried the gas inside the stadium. Unfortunately it's a small stadium with many openings so there were plenty of holes for the gas to get in.

PS. It was in La Plata, not Buenos Aires.

Alot of stadiums have confined spaces right outside them. Not sure about this one. But surely, law enforcement has to take the wind direction into account.

And was it even necessary to use tear gas in the first place?

Brazil went on to win that tournament too, which is either hilarious or infuriating depending on your perspective.

This stadium is very basic and old and doesn't have much around except a few tennis courts, but all still in the open. The incident happened few meters away from the entrance with some people trying to get in late without tickets. The police placed some fences to prevent them from getting closer but those people got angry and threw them down. That kicked off the police retaliation.

About the gas, well, I'm not an expert in the topic but I suppose it's very hard to disperse a crowd that outnumbers the police by a quite a lot if you don't use it. Still, they should have taken the layout of the place into account.

Peru just got stripped of the U17 WC due to lack of infrastructure and commitment. I wonder where this crazy rumor of them also wanting the U20 came from...

The source cited in WIkipedia for the claim that Peru and Qatar are candidates alongside Argentina is a peruvian article:
    https://larepublica.pe/deportes/202...atar-se-alzan-como-grandes-candidatos-1852114

Not much of a source, more of a confident statement but based only on speculation. Since Peru was stripped of the U17 tournament, I think it's safe to throw that speculation out.

Also kind of interesting that Qatar would host it given the original reason for stripping Indonesia, anyway so it's officially Argentina. Indonesia won't even send a team then?

Argentina is the first team that goes from not qualifying to a tournament to being seeded in the same tournament.
Hey Brazil, I guess you’re being replaced as the FIFA darling.
BTW, does anybody know what the Guinness world record is on penalties awarded to one team in a U20 WC?

Something that has amazed me since the world cup is that brazilians are actually the least salty fanbase with the Argentinian win.
The level of envy and inferiority complex shown by football fans from all the other latinamerican countries is unprecedented. They had their party for 28 years but now they have found themselves in the absolute mud regarding their NTs performances coupled with Argentina winning EVERYTHING in just 2 years and I guess it was simply too much to take at the same time for their frail psyche.

    USA
    France
    Senegal
    Italy

    Pot 2
    England
    Korea Republic
    New Zealand
    Brazil
    Ecuador
    Colombia

    Pot 3
    Nigeria

One team from each pot will be drawn into each of the six groups. FIFA’s general principle is to ensure that no group has more than one team from the same confederation drawn into it. The 24 teams will be drawn into six groups of four, with 16 of them qualifying for the knockout phase.

In the Argentina forum it was posted that they chose four cites with good weather so you were spot on.

La Plata, Mendoza, Santiago, San Juan.

No River or Boca Stadiums as first rumored.

FIFA doesn't allow any stadiums in use for club competitions while the WC is taking place. So, we'll have a very rare non Buenos Aires based competition. These 4 stadiums are owned by their provincial governments so they were the best available options.
