Started today! Brazil had a 2 goal lead until the 87th minute, but conceded a draw to hosts Ecuador in the late match. Like the U20, the schedule is really tight, with group matches every day. Five teams per group means each one gets one matchday off. Brazil's remaining matches: April 1 x Chile April 3 x Colombia (bye on April 5) April 7 x Uruguay Top 3 teams make it to the final round. Top 4 of the final round qualify for the World Cup in Peru, this November. (Plus one playoff spot, so 4.5 total).
Like Thursday, Brazil went up 2x0 in the first half with 2 goals by Kauã Elias. This time though instead of giving up the draw, Brazil extended the lead late to win 3x0. Colombia and Ecuador play the other group match soon and Uruguay have the bye. Brazil plays x Colombia on Monday, gets Wednesday off and plays Uruguay on Friday. Highlights:
Brazil 3x1 Colombia. Didn't really follow this one, but I'll add highlights when I can. Brazil are qualified for the final round. Last match of the first round is Friday, versus Uruguay. If Brazil win they will be first or, depending on Ecuador's results, second in group A. 0x0 at the half, Brazil scored on a PK (Dudu), but Colombia tied it 10 minutes later. Riquelme scored for Brazil almost immediately after the tieing goal and Rayan scored a late goal. Brazil also got a red card late but the match ended 3x1. Doesn't include the red card, but otherwise pretty complete highlights.
Brazil had a bye today. Colombia is out after losing to Chile. Uruguay is beating Ecuador 2x0, which puts them both in 3rd place with 4 points. Brazil is first with 7, Chile second with 6. Brazil x Uruguay and Chile x Ecuador are the final group A matches, this Friday.
Matches are finishing as I type. Brazil and Uruguay were tied at the half, but Brazil got 3 second half goals, 2 of them after 80 minutes, to win 3x0. Ecuador and Chile tied, meaning they go to the final round as well. Group B plays tomorrow, but the top 3 are confirmed, they can only change positions at most. The final round will be Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, Argentina, Paraguay and Venezuela, beginning on Tuesday.
First round of the final phase started today. Argentina (1st place in the other group) beat Chile (3rd place in our group) 2x0. Ecuador and Paraguay play later tonight. Brazil play Venezuela (3rd place team in the other group), starting in a few minutes. Line-up: Phillipe Gabriel, Souza, Da Mata, Vitor Nunes, Vitor Reis, Matheus Ferreira, Luiz Gustavo, Rayan, Dudu, Lorran, Kauã Elias
Just a 2x1 win, but at least we started on the right foot. With the top 4 qualifying to the World Cup it's almost impossible for Brazil not to qualify now.
Brazil had the early match today and beat Paraguay 3x2. Didn't get to follow it, but Paraguay scored first and Brazil turned it around in the first half. Second half Brazil got a red card, scored to make it 3x1 and Paraguay got a late goal to make it 3x2. I'll post highlights soon if I can. With 2 wins in 2 games Brazil is close to qualified already, mostly because other teams will take points from each other. They can't mathematically qualify before the next round. Highlights (while they last):
Ecuador and Argentina both won their matches today, so right now the table has 3 teams with 6 points (ECU, ARG, BRA) and the other 3 have 0. The 3 teams at the top right now would need a disaster to miss out on the World Cup as the top 4 qualify. Brazil's next match is Monday against hosts Ecuador. Thursday we play against Chile and Sunday April 23 against Argentina.
Equador got a 2x0 lead but Brazil tied with a late 1st half goal and an early 2nd half goal. In the end it was 2x2. Brazil and Ecuador have 7 points in 3 matches. So does Argentina, who tied Paraguay. I believe all 3 are qualified to the U17 World Cup now, and the other teams will fight for the last spot and a playoff chance. Next match is Brazil x Chile on Thursday.
With Venezuela beating Paraguay earlier today, all 4 automatic spots to the World Cup are decided. Brazil are winning 3x0 right now over Chile, which puts us in first place, pending the Argentina x Ecuador match. Venezuela are now in 4th and cannot be caught. Brazil and Argentina will play on Sunday, and Ecuador will face Venezuela. Any one of the top 3 can win the tournament.
Ecuador beat Argentina. That means that: Ecuador is first with a +6 GD Brazil is second with +5 Both teams are tied on 10 points going in to the final round. Ecuador plays Venezuela, Brazil plays Argentina (who has 7 points). The only way Argentina can still win is if Ecuador loses and Argentina beats Brazil by 4 goals. Brazil can win if Ecuador lose and Brazil draw or win. Ecuador have the advantage if both teams draw or if both teams win by the same difference.
Good article about Brazil's approach to youth teams right now (under Branco) and how they select players based on three criteria (not dissimilar to Tite's criteria for the senior side): "desempenho no momento, projeção para evolução e histórico (de personalidade, relacionamentos e capacidade de superação)" https://ge.globo.com/futebol/sul-am...sil-ve-captacao-devolver-o-protagonismo.ghtml
As I was typing the post above, the U17 match vs Argentina was wrapping up. Brazil won 3x2, which means they are currently in first, but Ecuador haven't played yet. Any win by Ecuador and they will take first place on goal difference. Brazil 3x2 Argentina First Brazil goal was scored by Riquelme... there are several Riquelme's in youth teams in Brazil right now. Popular name. Weird to see it in the scoreline for Brazil, even more so against Argentina.
Venezuela did it, they tied the match to deny Ecuador the title. Brazil are officially South American U17 champions as well as U20 champions now. Just going to repost the same article I posted earlier today as it's appropriate: https://ge.globo.com/futebol/sul-am...sil-ve-captacao-devolver-o-protagonismo.ghtml
Completely missed this tournament and thread. Sorry @Ombak you were here talking to your self. Thanks for posting as always.
I'll probably just pin the U17 WC thread. I just didn't want to overcrowd that area. U17 WC isn't until November though!
U17 World Cup has been moved to Indonesia. I guess since Israel did not qualify, it won't be an issue, so moving the U20 away from Indonesia, they can appease them by giving them the U17 instead.
Updating this thread for the World Cup. The draw was today and brazil got an interesting group: Indonesia are hosting. After losing the U20 WC they were awarded the U17 that Peru was unable to host. Brazil got group C. Matches are (times TBD): Brazil x Iran, Nov 11 Brazil x New Caledonia, Nov 14 Brazil x England, Nov 17
Also today: the U17 team was called up for 4 friendlies against Canada and the USA (2 each) in late September and early October). https://www.cbf.com.br/selecao-bras...e-convocada-para-amistosos-contra-estados-un? At least on paper, this group is more difficult than it seems. Iran won its group at the 2017 U17 World Cup and England beat Brazil 3-1 in the semifinals of that same tournament - which England won. Since the late 2010s, England has seen improvement at its youth divisions. It won the 2017 U17 and U20 World Cups. The pandemic brought a halt to youth tournaments, with the U20 World Cup returning this year. Let's hope Brazil can defend the title it won in 2019.
I'll be sticking this thread to the top in November, closer to the tournament itself. Today, the U-17 team was named for the World Cup: https://www.cbf.com.br/selecao-bras...leira-sub-17-e-convocada-para-a-copa-do-mundo GOLEIROS Matheus Corrêa - Corinthians Pedro Cobra - Palmeiras Phillipe Gabriel - Vasco ZAGUEIROS Da Mata - Grêmio João Souza - Flamengo Vitor Reis - Palmeiras LATERAIS João Henrique (Esquerdinha) - Fluminense Pedro Lima - Sport Souza - Santos Vitor Gabriel - Atlético Mineiro MEIO-CAMPISTAS Camilo - Grêmio Dudu - Athletico Paranaense Figueiredo - Palmeiras Lorran - Flamengo Luiz Gustavo - Corinthians ATACANTES Estevão - Palmeiras Kauã Elias - Fluminense Luighi - Palmeiras Pedrinho - Corinthians Rayan - Vasco Riquelme - Palmeiras Some of the stand out names here are Kauã Elias, Riquelme (I hate the name, poor kid ), Lorran, Pedrinho.
U17 World Cup begins tomorrow. Brief preview article on ge: https://ge.globo.com/futebol/mundia...il-vai-em-busca-do-penta-veja-destaques.ghtml Brazil's first match is Saturday against Iran, at 9am Brazilian time (4am for me! I'll catch the highlights when I wake up...).
