Good to hear! Gabbie Carle looked like she’s transitioned well to the pro game as well yesterday in Washington Spirit’s win over OL Reign
Madril on the other hand, ROUGH start judging from highlights. Portland dominated and pride gave up four goals… two of those off Madril turnovers. The other two with her flat footed in front of goal where she arguably could have been more aggressive in going after a rebound and a cross.
Anyone can have a bad game, especially when your coach sets the team up for failure. I think some underestimate what it takes to learn a position and how nuanced that can be. You had 2 CDMs (Cluff,Abello) who at max have a year experience at that position, Im guessing a lot less. 2 CBs who are more finesse, than power (Cosme,Madril) - trying to build out of the back with Marta central? Great player, but not much help in the build out. You have to get the ball to her and she is a liability on defense. On the road vs Portland, who are going to press and play pretty direct. Home opener? Bad idea. I felt bad for all of them. Good players in a bad spot. That said, the expectations for Madril should be very high. Not based on where she was drafted, but the NWSL decided that she was worth giving a contract to without a team. That set a strange precedent to me.
I found out I have access to NWSL games via streaming, so I caught up. The Pride were trying to advance the ball as fast as possible as opposed to building an attack. I thought Madril had some better passing in the second half. I watched a lot of the Gotham vs Angel City game. Nighswonger entered the game when Ali Krieger went out with an injury, and the coach put her in at the left back position. Her pass completion rate was very good with services into the box and even a shot on goal. It is pretty fun to track players that I've seen locally into the pros.
I am in the process of moving to FL to be closer to aging relatives. Looking forward to going to some FSU games. I did not see the recent gotham game. Did JN get in? She has a great game last week as posters noted.
Don't miss your chance to catch some Seminole Soccer this spring🍢🆚Auburn📅Apr. 22⏰2 p.m.📍Seminole Soccer Complex#OneTribe pic.twitter.com/glAjrgReON— FSU Soccer (@FSUSoccer) April 5, 2023 This is the first time that I have seen FSU promote a Spring game. The Pensky era is different.
Yes, she subbed in for the full second half, initially at left wing, and then they dropped her to left back. She is impressive, and it is only a matter of time before she is a regular in the starting lineup. She really impacts them in possession and with her quickness when she is on the pitch. She also works well with fellow lefty Kristie Mewis as they are both so technical and good in possession.
Thank you. I like JN in the back. She is fast and has great footskills and vision. My last trip to FSU was when they gave UMich a gut punch with an ot golden goal in 1/4 finals. Only a year later and golden goal out. A deep, well coached team. It was a lively atmosphere but for the final score.
FSU had scrimmage game against AU today. We were missing Gilchrist who just got back from YNT duty, Echegini and Zipay to apparent minor injuries. I say minor b/c I noticed no limping, casts, boots or braces. Did not see Amelia Horton either. Don't know why. The four freshmen and Lily Farkas not there yet. We dominated possession and had several good looks. 2 PKs. I believe it was Huff who missed hers and Heather Payne hit hers. Nguyen played in Gilchrist's CB position. The player that jumped out to me was Nesbeth. She was channeling her inner Jaelin Howell. Still love HP. Want Ran to stay in Left back. She was decent going forward until it came time to pass and she just couldn't connect. Jody was typically dangerous. Had one goal called back due to offsides. Couldn't tell from my angle, but it had to be by a small margin.
Thanks for the update! Hope Horton makes it back. Happy to see HP in the fold and getting a lot of time. And yeah, sounds like Iwai. I remember Carle’s first season at that position and I had a similar impression. She really improved that final pass over the years, hopefully Iwai can do the same.
In the fall, assuming health we will have Echegini, Zipay, ?Horton?, (Heather Payne may or may not be here Pro negotiations versus one more year of college and I assume some NIL) Lily Farkas (Michigan), Amelia Van Zanten, Peyton Nourse, Jordyn Dudley and Maggie Taitano. These 4 freshmen were all very highly rated. Can't wait to see how it all shakes out. BTW, Coach Pensky announced that there will be some type of get together or something that fans will be invited to on August 12th. Coach K is a legend, but Coach P is very much more fan friendly as evidenced by the open scrimmage, autograph signing by the players afterwards and the Aug 12th shindig. p.s. I was really looking forward to watching Zipay because she was showing a nice upward trend in her play with both physical talent and nuance/subtlety to her game last year.
RE: our backup GKer situation, I wonder if: 1) we are going to the portal 2) getting a walk on as an emergency measure 3) training a field player for emergency service.
Got to think they will be reaching out to every single one in there if they don’t already have one lined up. Imagine any of those would be better than the other two options you laid out above. SOMEONE will want to sit on the bench for a chance to head to a final four…
I read somewhere that the soccer transfer portal opens May 1. Can anyone confirm? It will be interesting to see if we get any transfers beyond a GKer. We will still have a small roster this coming year. 24 at last count, and that includes Heather Payne who is a maybe.
I think you're right davey. It'll be interesting to see who and how many we get. Got to believe we get a GKer, but with our low numbers, I wouldn't be surprised to see1 or 2 others. JMHO
I read elsewhere that a player or two came down with a bug or something leaving our numbers too low in Brian's view to stress the limited healthy ones.
