The whole notion that college/university students should not collectively express their disapproval of an outside speaker on their own campus is not only ahistorical, it also demonstrates how thoroughly our society has accepted the idea that "society" is nothing but an aggregation of atomized individuals who function primarily not as citizens but as consumers; in this case in the "marketplace of ideas."
JFC. ALL of Rupey's properties do a disservice to & radicalize its audience. But 1/6 was a bridge too far.
After reading all the posts about this judge, I wonder how many here could have politely sat thru his presentation. The students should have come armed with pea shooters!
I don't believe this was an opportunity for "debate" - it was not a discussion, there was no Q&A, it was just a speech. It was set up so that nobody could challenge the speaker without breaking the "rules", at which point the trolls would complain about those rulebreakers. It's a lose-lose situation - if you challenge the guy you're breaking the rules, and if you don't challenge the guy the trolls are going to strut around like they own the place. The only way to win is not to play.
Meh, wait till they graduate & give them a few years and they too will become Silicon Valley libertarian chodes
Then what they did was all they could do. Or fill the hall and, the second the asshole judge comes out, EVERYBODY gets up and walks out. That would have been beautiful.
https://wpln.org/post/republicans-b...gun-control-protest-on-tennessee-house-floor/ Three Democratic lawmakers who took part in protests on the House floor of the Tennessee statehouse will face expulsion later this week. Earlier Monday, the three lawmakers were removed from their committee assignments and had their badges to the capitol deactivated. Reps. Justin Jones, D-Nashville; Justin J. Pearson, D-Memphis; and Gloria Johnson, D-Knoxville, are facing discipline after supporting protesters pushing for more gun control at the capitol, days after the Covenant School shooting. Do I really need to comment further?
Someone will go on about democracy's guardrails being safe and how those concerned about the continuance of our democracy are exagerating.
Are you writing for The Volokh Conspiracy now? https://reason.com/volokh/2023/04/0...s-for-law-students-from-the-left-to-the-left/ He quotes a guy named Andrew Koppelman: I'm an advocate of LGBTQ rights. I've fought Duncan and his allies for decades. I think it's a good thing when he presents his views, precisely because I want to defeat those views – to change the law, in ways that Duncan would hate. The fundamental purpose of a law school is to give the next generation the skills to build a more just world. In order to develop those skills, the students need the experience of engaging with smart, skilled people like [Judge Kyle] Duncan who embrace ideas that they find hurtful and abhorrent. A good advocate must anticipate the strongest arguments on the other side – arguments that she may find painful to contemplate, especially when she has not yet figured out how to answer them. That's true of all lawyers, but it's particularly pertinent to those who are trying to advance social change There's a link to Koppelman's article, which has this good bit, too. (DEI Dean) Steinbach does not understand the point of legal education. I’ve had the kind of painful encounters she describes. They made me a better advocate. The pain and the improvement are inseparable. There is no substitute for actually meeting and talking to the people on the other side, discovering that they do not instantly crumble under your questions, feeling frustrated that the encounter was not the moral triumph you had hoped for, and regretfully realizing, two days later, what you should have said. If you can’t handle that, please don’t be an LGBTQ rights lawyer. You won’t be good at it, and so will do the movement real harm. Shielding students from encountering Duncan is like keeping a boxer from watching videos of an opponent’s fights. This kind of insulation will make law students less competent to do their jobs, and will lead them to lose cases that they could have won. That's a good point. And it's worth pointing out that many of the conservatives in the days when Post WWII American political conservatism was on the rise went to lefty bastions (Berkeley, Yale,, Harvard). They probably honed some skills there that they wouldn't have in more friendly confines. In fact it will probably help progressives in the long run that conservatives now have their own echo chamber "colleges" to go to (Liberty, Patrick Henry).
I’ll comment further. Of the 3 Dems who were threatened 2 were Actually Expelled. Surprise those 2 are black. The White one wasn’t. Now, I won’t comment further. !!!! “Rep. Summer Lee (D-Pa.) similarly called the expulsion of state Democratic Reps. Justin Jones and Justin Pearson "straight-up fascism in its ugliest, most racist form." Jones and Pearson are both Black; a vote to expel their colleague Rep. Gloria Johnson, who is white, fell short”
That’s what they say also. We are 'just beginning,' Tennessee GOP boasts in fundraiser after expelling Democrats The Tennessee Republican Party waited less than 24 hours to start fundraising off the expulsion of two progressive lawmakers from the state House—openly bragging Friday about what critics have called a blatantly anti-democratic move that shows the party's growing authoritarianism.
Think about the post-truth bullshit you just wrote. @xtomx repping you is part and parcel of what has become increasingly annoying about this forum: the way many of us are aping what we mock.
You didn't bother reading the actual article, correct? Lazily, you just clicked the link in the post. Here is a link: https://www.commondreams.org/news/tennessee-gop-expulsion-fundraiser
What in the hell are you saying? Just read the article. It took me about 4 seconds to find the article and 3 seconds to post it for you, since you would rather attack others than do a modicum of research. THAT is what is part and parcel of what is annoying about this forum.
The article is about fundraising. From the article: In a Friday FUNDRAISING email, the Tennessee GOP said: "Their adolescence and immature behavior brought dishonor to the Tennessee General Assembly as they admitted to knowingly breaking the rules. Actions have consequences, and we applaud House Republicans for having the conviction to protect the rules, the laws, and the prestige of the State of Tennessee." Do you fail to see the word "fundraising " in the article, including the section originally posted? It appears four times in the first several paragraphs, including twice in the portion @usscouse posted. Seriously, Dave what is going on with you?
Please quote the paragraph that mentions fundraising https://www.commondreams.org/news/tennessee-house-democrats-expulsion-vote
You are deliberately posting the wrong thing I posted the link to the article in question, a portion of which @usscouse posted, but without a link. You are posting a link to an article linked in the article posted. Just stop it. Or don't stop. Whatever.
