So Cain is responsible for the outbreak of Republican politicians who love to describe themselves using gangster terms?
The only notable elite I can think of for DeSantis is one Charles Schwab, who has been a Republican for decades. And he was annoyed with DeSantis at a political event and even told him as much. Also, Murdoch was trying to promote him but it's obvious that it's still Trump.
Try Squeeze. It has to do with a Trump-like ex-president and group of 80 elderly sycophantic women who live in Mar-a-lago (sort of) and who call themselves The Potussies, which is short for Potus P*****s.
They didn't expect because expecting implies thinking about the future and current Republicans don't think but they do things that make them and their supporters feel good in the present.
What's the significance (aka trolling) of the number 21? I get the play behind it being Charles' descendants.
I read that it's a traditional clause in contracts in the UK going back some time - the idea being that you don't want it to last forever, but you do want it to last a long time, so you pick a value based on someone who is going to live for a while (i.e. not a peasant who will die of cholera), someone who's notable so their descendants are fairly widely known, and then you add 21 to it. As far as I can tell, the 21 is just arbitrary. But it's like the US signing a 99 year lease on Guantanamo Bay, or the UK with a 99 year lease on Hong Kong - you intend for it to last a while but not beyond the heat death of the universe, and you let your grandchildren or great-grandchildren work out what happens when the contract expires. Here's a wikipedia page which talks about this, although it uses the Disney clause as an example, so it may not be the best source. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_lives_clause
I thought it was some kind of dig at Meatball's declaration of "The corporate kingdom finally comes to an end” at his press conference ushering in the new board. This makes much more sense. The House of Mouse has been around for 100 years and operates in numerous governments. It also has the knowledge of its popularity on a global scale and the billions of dollars it brings into FL and the number of jobs it creates. It can weather the short political seasons of any politician. So I was surprised that Disney was so quiet on this front for so long. Know we know why. Also, It’s funny to hear Florida politicians complain that a business hid information from them... in a contract that they signed out in the open. The board members found out almost a month later and it wasn't even their first board meeting. DeSantis and his goons think they'll find a loophole or something, ignoring that Disney is the master of creating loopholes and making contracts that are not only ironclad but ALWAYS benefits them above everyone else. Add in all the top-notch lawyers from around the world under Disney's payroll, and you best believe there's probably very very little Meatball can do.
I’m a late comer to Hiaasen who started in the 80s but it seems the corruption has always been part of Florida. Watched a really eye opening TV Docu. on Florida, making a State or something a while back thinking HTF do they get away with all this.
That's probably why they used a "royal lives" clause. The wiki article says that sometimes contracts will use a "President's lives" clause, where the contract goes until some time after all of the currently living descendants of a President die out. So they could have done a Biden family clause, which would probably encourage some nutbag to kill Hunter; a Trump family clause for however many grandchildren TFG has (Ivanka has some, and I think at least one of the older failsons has also reproduced), or, the ultimate in trolling, a "Governor's lives" clause, where the contract will be in effect until 21 years after DeSantis' own kids have died.
It certainly was in the 70s -- I loved the Godfathers in Louisville, but it's been almost 50 years since the last time I had it.
Since it started in Omaha, it was a Nebraska staple growing up. Back in the 80's it was still something of a treat for a lot of us who grew up in small towns where Pizza Hut was the only option. I doubt I've had it since the late 80's, though.
That's because the Republican Party is more about performative art than it is about governing. Their entire reason for being right now is the grift and the best way to do that is to spin up the rage machine. They can then send out donation request emails to their followers and just sit back as the rubes send them millions. It is worth noting that the reason why Disney did this wasn't just because they didn't want the board to have control over how they managed their park. Several of the board members have been very vocal about how they were going to use the board to control the content that Disney put out. IE, Disney announces a movie that will have a trans person in it. Guess what, the board just passed a height restriction that prevents Disney from completing a new ride they've sunk millions into. But hey, the board is open to negotiating the height restriction with Disney and, wouldn't you know it, one of the conditions is that Disney agrees to only have cisgender, heterosexual characters in their movies.
I agree with everything you wrote, except this part is probably closer to an absolute binary than a matter of degree.
My Godfathers was great! The dining room was divided in two, with half being two steps up, so you could look out (down) on everyone else. Big, wide tables with chairs that were like executive office chairs. The building was a converted office, so the windows were tall and rectangular, just much more interesting than the windows in a strip mall. Deep windowsills and on that raised platform we could bring our own boomboxes. Had to keep the volume low, and the staff was insistent on that point. One regular waiter was as big as a bouncer, so when he said to keep it down, we surely did. Overall, sitting in those tables, looking out over the rest of the patrons, with a bouncer at the door, well, us 17-year olds certainly felt like godfathers.
Longwell was talking today about name recognition amongst the GOP candidates and how most voters have no idea who Youngkin is despite him being a ‘successful’ governor who was handpicked to thread the crazy needle and win a tough race. it shows the extent to which the GOP media machine and donor class have manufactured Ron to be the next big thing. I think this reality is being revealed now. Ron has high favs because so much propaganda has been spread about him. So people have heard of him but most voters have no idea who he really is because he has not done mainstream interviews.
I have a friend in my WhatsApp PL group that is a HR attorney. He posted this in the group. Law Twitter was hilarious yesterday because this seemingly implicates the "rule against perpetuities" which is something covered in the first year of law school and permanently scars all law students - but a rule we very rarely see in the real world (unless you do property law or maybe trusts and estates?)
Florida’s Republican-controlled Legislature passed a bill Thursday allowing individuals to carry concealed loaded weapons anywhere without a permit,” NBC News reports. “The bill now goes to Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis, who has repeatedly indicated he will sign it.” “The measure scraps the existing requirements for concealed weapons permits, including an extra layer of background checks, licensing and firearms training.” So Florida has "Stand your ground" and now concealed loaded weapon carru w/out permit........What could go wrong? ♂️♂️♂️
