I don't believe it. Forgetting about game day ticket sales, the revenue from TV and sponsors that could be gained will be worth quite a lot. Especially if they go far in a tournament.

Falvo you've made this El argument so many times over the years. It's not going to happen.

Ticket sales, clubs still don't own stadiums which is embarrassing these days. Lol

Yeah ok I get it but what about the old UEFA and Cup Winners Cups? Teams were elated to win those tournaments and that was 20-30 years ago when there were no revenues other than ticket sales.

Again I know it is not like the CL but I just don't believe there is no money to be made in the EL. I’m sure it’s more than winning the scudetto which doesn’t bring in much other than a place in the CL. They can do that though by placing in the top 4 which they most likely will do anyway so the EL is just extra revenue.

You make more selling a player.

But we aren't good at that either. We let the bastards leave for free!

Falvo, the EL is just not a good deal for us. Wear and tear and all... very little money to be had... we've faced multiple injury crises. Let's focus on Serie A, get again among the top 4, and prepare better for next year's CL with a more experienced squad. Our team was the youngest by average age of the players, in this edition of the CL.

Need better more quality players. I don't think Elliot management gives a shit.

Who is kjaers replacement??? What if Tomori gets injured again. We're doomed.

Read that Maldini hasn't been that concerned which pisses me off

Regardless, I still don't believe the EL isn't a money maker.

As I posted in the other thread,, my friend Fabio Petruzzi used to play for Roma, Brescia with Baggio and then finally at Bologna.

He told me each player made $500k just because his team qualified for the UEFA Cup.

That was like 25 years ago and it has to be at least triple that amount now, if not more.

He only made player bonus money but it doesn't include the sponsors or the TV money that the team gets.

Again they don't make CL revenue but of course the EL makes money....

Anyway, forgetting about the EL, Milan was clearly not ready for the CL.

If Milan really wants or has ambition to start advancing in the CL and even though they score goals in the Serie A, they better start thinking about life after a 36/37 year old Olivier Giroud or an Ibrahimovic at 40/41 and invest in some younger , talented players.

The older guys can lend their experience in league action or off the bench but when you are playing in Europe , you need young men.

    Time for “Largo ai giovani”!

@falvo, the tournament formerly known as the UEFA Cup has been allowed to morph into a JV tournament over the years. My understanding is that in the past you are correct; it was a more prestigious tournament, with more relevant monetary awards. That has changed as the CL has turned into its current incarnation with more teams and more games. The TV deals for the CL have skyrocketed while the TV money for the EL has not. Since I've been following Milan closely (after the 2007 CL win), my impression has been that the EL is more nuisance than it's worth for the "big clubs". There's no real money to be made there, especially considering the other factors mentioned. Go through @swissramble's Twitter or website for financial reviews for the clubs. His Milan reviews are telling when he compares the money from CL years versus EL years.

If that is the case and teams are in fact losing money, I wouldn’t even wish to particiate.

Even for Roma suffering through a humiliating loss in the UEFA Conference League and losing 6-1 to Bodø / Glimt?

Why even bother playing in it if there is no money to be made and if teams are losing money?

Prestige only goes so far and if I were an owner, I’d pull out of such tournaments or elect not to play in the first place.

It literally makes no sense to keep playing in them when you are losing money.

I mean what would be the lure? .

My son who knows very well these things, such as money rewards in each tournament, had already warned me that playing in the EL these days is a losing proposition. He was sad that we didn't beat Liverpool and didn't qualify for the knock-out stage but at least glad to we were 4th and not 3rd, and will not have to risk our players with excessive number of games, by playing a low-reward tournament that lost prestige.

No, this is wrong. Winning the Scudetto brings in as much revenue for a team in Serie A as winning the Champions League. The other tournaments are poor man's victories.

Yes thinking over more , you are right.

When I posted that 3 months ago , I may have been confused thinking winning the EL would be better than the coppa Italia and it also gives you a place in the CL.

Anyway, back in the day when I lived in Italy, as I recall , winning the Coppa UEFA was very prestigious.

Too bad there isn’t more money in it.

Roma last year seemed to generate a lot of interest when they won the Conference League and did make some money in the end.

The celebration from Romanisti fans for winning that competition was pretty incredible and better than nothing.

Only if you were an AS Roma fan, otherwise it was mostly ignored.

Well they are desperate for any kind of victory and they have a coach who is more interested in pretending he won something than actually winning something worth winning. Like he finally did by playing 10 men behind the ball with a team that I built the foundation of back in 2011.

Whenever he has had to start from scratch, he's a mid table coach at best.
