This article mentions that Argentina has expressed interest. Though CONMEBOL is hosting the U-17 World Cup later this year. Indonesia Stripped of Hosting Under-20 World Cup by FIFA (usnews.com). It also hints at Indonesia being kicked out of WC 2026 qualifiers, granted that just saves them further embarrassment on the field since their team is beyond garbage.
I'd be cool with it if Argentina hosted as long as they are not allowed to play. Would be silly to let them through the back door like that.
But keeping Indonesia's automatic qualification to a tournament that they were unable to host would be even more silly and unfair.
I'm pretty sure they'd be expecting an invite if they hosted. (I assume Indonesia won't be allowed to compete anymore so that leaves a spot open).
How about this? - Keep u20 Men's WC within AFC territory. - Let the best 5th AFC team advance to u20 Men's WC. No time for playoff. - FIFA avoids penalties for breaking TV contracts, keeping same time zones. - Let IDN know that RUS will return to world competitions, before IDN does. - Do all this, while letting Conmebol spout all that jazz about being capable of organizing a world tournament with a 53-day notice.
They are? The Peruvian press has run rampant in the last couple weeks with reports that Peru had been stripped of hosting rights... admittedly, I haven't dug enough to make a determination on if it's substantiated or tabloid fear-mongering.
You kill the interest in the competition if you don't allow the host country to field a team. Especially for a "fringe" competition like an U20 WC.
IF it's confirmed, it'll be a success with most games having big attendances, I have no doubts. And you'll be sooo salty
Indonesia didn't even make the top 8 of the asian U20 tournament. Can't see why there should be a different criteria now.
The circumstances are a bit different no? Stepping in as a last second host is not the same as being awarded a bid years in advance. The enlightenment is easy and simple for many to understand. It is not fair for teams like Paraguay or Ecuador who (based on merit) deserve to go ahead of Argentina. Argentina would go because they can host and just because there are riots in the streets of another country. It just seems a bit weird to me and I am sure I am not alone. Indonesia were promised this tournament waaaaaaaay before qualifying. They were suppose to host it in 2021, then covid hit.
So the reason is because it's "weird" to you. Ok. Argentina would participate because FIFA awards an automatic place to the host nation in each and every national team competition they organize. It has never been a place based on sport merit. And it's not the first time they have moved the venue of a youth tournament yet they have always kept this criteria even in such circumstances.
Yes, weird for a team to be backdoored when a team like Paraguay deserves it more. Argentinos should rejoice that politics/religious controversies helped them.
As for the tournament itself the teams better bring their long sleeve shirts. Some venues may be very, very cold compared to what they were expecting in Indonesia.
2019 FIFA u17 world cup: Peru was the original host and they finished higher than Brazil at the south american U17 championship yet Brazil ended up hosting and therefore qualifying as host instead. The issue here is that you seem to think the host quota is awarded to a confederation: it's not, it's awarded directly to an individual nation. There is no reason to give it to Paraguay more than to give it to.... Vanuatu.
I did not agree with that decision either. I think it should be taken into consideration the way things occurred within the competition of a sport, because it is a sport... .. but I do understand FIFA is going to FIFA. And it makes it clean cut for them Group wise.
Buddy, every sport's international federation does the same. Be it Basketball, Volleyball, Handball, Hockey, Water Polo, Baseball, whatever you want... the host ALWAYS has a team in the competition regardless of sport merit. It's an absolutely standarized procedure. It's commercial suicide to not do it unless we're talking about a "too big to fail" event like the senior world cup.
In this case they could have awarded it to a team already qualified and played with a Group of three which has happened in the past in some tournaments. Or awarded it to a Country that is like China that still would have had people go. They are never in World Cups and are usually in the top 5 of tickets sold. But whatever. Congrats to Argentinos sincerely.
Very cold compared to Indonesia is also known as "ideal". We are talking temps well into the 50s. It'll be fine. (remember the tournament kicks off fairly early - 20 May).
Fans of teams that make deep runs in the tournament better hope there's not too many night games. There's a chance it can feel like freezing.
