What, don't you want to help David Beckham pay his team? I'm sure that when they're awarding him the Cup he'll make a point of thanking the whole league for helping him met his payroll. Is there no limit to how far and how often MLS will bend over and let Stupid Spice roger it up the bum?
Which means we'll end up with Doctor Khumalo again. And surely Paul Caligiuri will make an appearance right before suing everybody to get himself out of the living hell that is Columbus.
I think it’s a great because I couldn’t give a shit about teams profits. Bring Messi now. Let’s have him play for the Crew in August right into the playoff qualifying stretch. The rest of the league can have him later.
Even Messi isn’t going to make Miami a title contender. I’m sure he’ll help but I don’t think it’s a competitive advantage all that much. It’s a pooled marketing expense. I’m all for it. MLS needs another shot of growth now that Apple is showing it worldwide. Was Beckham that bad for the league as a whole? Rational minds would say go for it.
This is a story which would be a better fit if it had a a byline dated this Saturday. Sounds like BS to me. I get it. We're all used ot MLS just making up rules as it goes. But this harkens back to a previous area when this stuff seemed to happen all the time. It's basically a Clint Dempsey kind of svenario with another "0" (or two) tacked onto the pricetag. In no way, shape or form does it align with the league's publically available rules. In fact, it clearly contradicts them in numerous areas. If MLS were to engineer such a thing, it woudl open itself up to ridicule and set a dangerous precedent. That said, I can't imagine that all teams would buy in to such a half-assed idea.
That was such an odd situation. Even more odd when you consider that his brother, Michael Caligiuri, built his medical career here for over 20 years at OSU, ending up as the CEO of The James Cancer Center.....WTF was wrong with Paul?
Dude was a star. Don't you remember his Pert Plus commercials? He couldn't be expected to slum it in Columbus.
Dr Caligiuri is an incredible human and would likely still be here in Columbus if not for Michael Drake's crusade to siphon money out of the James and into his agenda-driven pet projects. That whole saga still makes my blood boil.
Yeah, I have tried to forget that unique chapter of US Soccer history, since I despise him so much.....It may have been more appropriate for him to have done a Head & Shoulders dandruff commercial.
My favorite Caligiuri story: We were at a game and as usual every time Paul touched the ball the place erupted with boos. A guy was sitting in front of us with 2 young boys, clearly their first ever Crew game. Part way through the first half the guy turned around and asked me why everybody was booing the guy. I explained it. He then discussed it with his kids and the next time Caligiuri touched the ball all three of them just started screaming at him, booing like madmen. One of the guys I was with turned to me and said " you've created a new Crew fan"
I believe there are several Caligiuri's in Columbus. I've run into two and had one as a professor, who's now Disciplinary Counsel (the person who disciplines lawyers).
Paul Caligiuri and Dr Mike ain’t brothers. That’s just a coincidence. Paul is born and bred in California (relavant to why things didn’t work out here) and Michael is from Buffalo. Followed his mentor to OSU and later was recruited to California.
Somebody told me they were bros., they look somewhat similar to each other, so I believed it....thanks for the clarification.
