This ESPN article breaks down/speculates on the thought process of Brazil, Spurs, and Real Madrid with regard to coaches. Spurs want Pochettino back apparently, and Brazil definitely want Ancelotti. But Pochettino wants to wait for Madrid, if Ancelotti is going. It's not clear how much Madrid wants to keep Ancelotti at this point, but it seems like Brazil would have to pay up to get him out of his contract, if he isn't fired. Not that any of this has anything directly to do with the USMNT, but I thought it does underscore how hard (maybe impossible?) it will be to get a top coach like Ancelotti, especially when plum jobs like Brazil, Spurs, potentially Real Madrid, etc. remain open.
I think Brazil is definitely waiting on Ancelotti and seems to think they have a shot at him. And I definitely don't think he's coming to the USMNT over Brazil (unless he really wants to live in Vancouver and we are willing to let him). And there's a good chance he will leave Real Madrid this summer. I don't think Pochettino will end up back at Spurs though. He's certainly a sentimental choice, but alot of the focus has been on Luis Enrique (also a potential option for Brazil) and more recently they seem super interested in Nagelsmann. Now their director of football was just suspended today by FIFA so who knows how that will impact their coaching search. But in the end we need to get the sporting director search wrapped up soon (which seems doable given that they are in the second round of interviews), and get the process going. We should definitely ask someone like Ancelotti as to their interest even if the chances are low. Figure out who the interested coaches are and go from there.
Fabrizio Romano on the vacant #USMNT job:"Speaking to agents, I’ve heard many names. It’s complicated because of the pressure there will be on the US during the next World Cup. It’s important to have a coach who can handle that pressure, and who can develop these young players” pic.twitter.com/QMXEz1kWJX— State of Football (@St8ofFootball) March 30, 2023
In fairness he did say a bit more on the podcast lol. Basically all still depends on Earnie's replacement but word from agents is that there's a decent amount of coaches watching the job. Some interested some don't want the pressure
It’s funny anyone would consider the USMNT high pressure. You got a lot of people on twitter who will get very worked up about you, but it’s definitely less pressure than being the coach of England or Brazil, and definitely less than being the coach of an EPL team.
I will say I don't actually think Berhalter should be back at this point, but there's a part of me that just wants to see the reaction if he returns. Berhalter derangement syndrome is a real thing.
Well said. We live in an age where the manager has to manage social media as well as he manages the team and the USA players are immature in a "top 8" elite level sense. No doubt Romano speaks after talking among various managers (or getting it second hand from agents, as he says) about what they think of managing USA and his assessment is likely a collective opinion
Do you mean the reaction of the players to see if fatigue and frustration sets in, a little like in the Sep window or do you mean the public in general?
The reaction from the anti Berhalter crowd. I doubt there would be any public reaction from the player pool, who largely likes Berhalter.
If they don’t do it soon they’ll have to wait until the team falters. Hiring him after they win the Nations League will feel like a letdown…despite the teams success in the tournament when he was coach.
I don’t think he’ll actually be rehired. Not unless the players really push for it. And while most like him, I also don’t know that they are going to get super involved in the coaching search.
Mexico in April and again in June. Wins in those games and it’s hard to rationalize the need for consistency in order to progress. Losses on the other hand….
One symptom of BDS is the impulse to wish destruction upon the USMNT, by unleashing the 3G's Virus, simply to have the sadistic satisfaction of observing the pain of those who care about the USMNT.
I don't think winning or losing those games makes any difference as to whether Berhalter will be back or not. My opinion is the chances are fairly low that he comes back at this point. I think we'll see a coach search that includes Cherundolo, Marsch, Curtin, and plausible European candidates like Vieira. I would like to see Brazil fill their coaching job though. To the extent there are big name candidates out there who are interested in taking a national team job, they are going to prefer Brazil to us. And Brazil for perhaps the first time ever, is very open to hiring a foreign coach.
Really? I know you are on here plenty. There were a bunch of posts made where guys were saying stupid crap about losing or nor qualifying would be ok if it meant getting rid of Berhalter.
The original post implied that some of us would like to rehire Berhalter even if it meant USMNT destruction.
Ok thanks for the clarification. Didn't take it that way at all. And for the record - rehiring Berhalter would in no way destruct the USMNT so not sure where that comment is coming from either?
Some symptoms may include: * Rose-tinted goggles for the Klinsmann era * Only criteria for the next manager being "foreign" and "Not an MLS coach" without taking any other factors into account (other US fans are the only fans I've met who have actually wanted Roberto Martinez as manager, for instance) * A refusal to look at the history of prior US teams who had done better or worse than the Berhalter-era. * Refusing to look at the background of players or certain hires. i.e. refusing to acknowledge that a good amount of our core came through MLS Academies or not looking at Earnie Stewart's background before (and after) his USSF tenure * Being terminally online, particularly on Twitter
