Too bad Spain does not respect the player's wishes in the same way!

This is a great, lighthearted video, but it got me into a petty mood.

Everybody pronounced "Jackie" the way she herself said her name was meant to be pronounced in an interview on YouTube with Kieran Theivam. Yes, she did accept/acknowledge the usual pronunciation right afterwards, but come on, "Shackie" is surely easier than "Siobhan". Also, so many United fans taking the time to address/learn about how to pronounce Batlle while not doing the same for Groenen's first or last name still confuses me.

Groenen as the lone holder and Spitse as part of a back 3 vs Denmark. Thought Groenen was largely excellent yesterday like she was in that role at the Olympics, and she even won a couple aerial balls. Spitse looked good/comfortable at right CB; it might be interesting to try out such a setup against a top rated team.

Ajax defeated PSV 1-0 with Romee Leuchter getting the lone goal. Ajax are undefeated and play FC Twente next Sunday to see which team stays atop the league. I hope it is televised so I can watch it. Isa Kardinaal has not played in several weeks and has not made the game day roster. I've not seen any notice of an injury.

FC Twente beat Ajax 3-1 in a match of the two unbeated Erediviisie teams. It was a pretty even game with some great saves from Twente's van Domselaar, the Dutch #1 who also smartly saved Leucter's penalty kick. The first two goals came off corner kicks with dodgy defending from Ajax (looked like they took lessons from the men's team. Third goal was in the 89th minute with an Ajax turnover and quick counter when Ajax had too many players up field.

  6. I saw the last 10 minutes of the first half. It was pretty even in those minutes.

Miedema has torn her ACL and, sadly for her and the Dutch national team, will miss the World Cup.

    Long overdue update:

    Eredivisie round 16 results:

Ajax v Feyenoord played in the Johan Cruijff Arena, in front of a little under 30.000 spectators (33k+ tickets sold). Twente dropping their first points of the season today, had the upper hand before being down to 10 players after an early red card. Still an even game as Fortuna's game plan was sit back and counter [emoji849].

Good interview of Kerstin Kasparij by Ameé Ruszkai. I don't know which surprised me more — that Kasparij is only 22, or that she already had 7 years of experience in the Dutch Eredivisie before heading over to Manchester City

So, judo lost two Dutch NT starters/regulars to football. Is being good/very good at both judo and football something more common for youth in the Netherlands?

Judo is a big sport, highly influenced of course by the Olympic gold medals in the 60's. Also highly recommended for developing childrens motor skills. I don't think it's very integrated into the football programs but at some point they did included it at Ajax

So what newcomers should we expect to make a big impact at the World Cup — newcomers being those who weren't starters or key players at 2017 Euros and 2019 World Cup? The "can't miss" answer is, of course, GK van Domselaar, and the lazy answer (I think, tee-hee!), Pelova and Roord, but what about Brugts, Casparij, Nouwen, Damaris, Snoeijs?

I don't see anyone from the last U-20 World Cup on this new roster, not even Samantha von Dieman

Yet, no news yet (at least none that I've found) on Groenen's exact injury and how long she's expected to be out for.

Roord was a regular starter at the Olympics (where the Dutch were a Martens PK away from the semifinals) and Euro 2022; she'd definitely be a lazy answer. (She also got decent time off the bench at the 2019 World Cup.)

Nouwen just hasn't been good/consistent since the start of the Olympics, and Snoeijs doesn't even get playing time as a sub. Damaris looks set for a starting role at the Olympics based on the Austria matches, but I don't expect her to make a big impact. Brugts as a LB (based on the Austria matches again) and Casparij could be impactful at the World Cup. Given Martens' form, I maybe would go with Casparij at LB, Brugts at LW, and Wilms at RB, which would maybe make it even more likely for Brugts to make a big impact.

Anybody know what the Groenen injury is? Hope it's not too serious.

As for WC impact, it's hard to say but certainly if Brughts and Casparij start at the outside back positions, as I think they might, they and Van Domselaar give this team a very nice injection of youth, athleticism and talent. I'm excited about what they can bring to the team. Casparij will have to beat out Wilms for the right-back spot; both are playing as subs currently, for ManCity (Casparij) and Wolfsburg (Wilms), respectively. Wilms had the starting right back spot before Casparij emerged, and now Jonker seems to favor the ManCity player, who runs extremely well and, like Wilms, has competitive streak that one likes to see. I think Brugts was only recently tried at left back in the most recent friendly, and the coach seemed pleased with her performance. She might be able to give Martens some much-needed help on the left side. I don't know what kind of defender Brughts is, or Caparij for that matter, but I think they've got bright futures and will help this team.

Pelova has been playing as a forward for Arsenal and winning praise from Coach Eidevall for her work rate, ball skills, physicality and overall play. She had an excellent game against Tottenham a few days ago. I expect her to have a positive impact--probably playing up front on the right with Beerensteyn moving in the CF role in Meidema's absence. She is certainly not a classic outside forward, but she drifts inside and can be quite effective. Demaris has been playing regularly for Lyon and seems poised to nudge Spitse out of her longtime starting role. That would help in some ways but hurt the Dutch with respect to free kicks--Spitse is an excellent free-kick specialist--and not sure who would take that role in Spitse's absence--maybe Janssen or Pelova? Janssen takes PKs and free kicks for Wolfsburg. Roord, back from injury, will certainly compete for a starting job in either midfield or forward. It may be that she comes in for Pelova, or vice versa. Snoejis has a real nose for goal and it's nice to see her in the selection again but it may be hard for her to get playing time. And the same applies to Kalma and Folkertsma: A couple of talented players but can they break into the lineup?

Nouwen looks set to back up Janssen and Van der Gragt at centerback.

  20. That could be because of the very harsh privacy laws of the EU, that come with very unpleasant fines. You basically are only allowed to publish such things when she tells you it in an interview and gives you permisson to publish it.

Why do I feel like this sort of delayed/slow update is far more representative/present in women's football vs men's football though?

  23. I've no idea why that could be the case.

A lot of clubs don't want to give away information about available players.
Plus it is also a case of medical data that cannot be shared without the patient's content.
During Covid clubs were reluctant to share that kind of information.
