    Dear mates,
In view of the progress of the season, I would like to see with you your feelings about your opinions on the race for the Ballon d'Or 2023.
Do you think that Erling Haaland, if he can make Manchester City win the first Champions League in history, can take the Ballon d'Or 2023 from Lionel Messi?
What do you think of the other contenders?
For my part, Mbappé seems to have lost ground, and the two Madrilenians (Vinicius and Benzema) have recently gained ground.
My deep feeling is that Messi's Ballon d'Or is not as sure as one would think if Haaland managed to win the Champions League with City..
Because the voters will have more fresh memories of the Champions League campaign, rather than a distant memory, however memorable, of the World Cup..
For my part, at the moment:
    1- Messi
    2- Haaland
    3- Mbappé
    4- Benzema
    5- Vinicius Jr

    I make my list later

But this revisionism has the problem of contextualizing what people thought at the time. I think Puskas emerged in 1952 after the Olympic gold medal, no? And I don't think that many in Europe considered Maradona the best in the world in 1979.

I found a more reliable source about the Uruguay 1930 final. According to this account, he specialized in this World Cup, Scarone gave 2 assists.

That's helpful and interesting to see I think - to be honest I have been previously confused about one of the Argentinian goals and who scored it too, thinking Peucelle at first then seeming to think it must have been the Stabile one (indicated in the post I made in this thread, below), but now again I think it probably was the Peucelle goal, as described by him on Twitter, and the labelling on Youtube is possibly incorrect (as it seems like surely the same goal anyway):

I know this has nothing to do with the thread, but I wanted to know what bigsoccer members think about this, especially @PDG1978 . In opinion, Maradona's prime was not in Napoli and second, Pelé played in similar circumstances to Maradona. Those are the 2 conclusions I came to.

Interesting to see mate. While respecting your ideas, my own impression(/assumption?) is that while Pele was I think probably past his prime (no longer the same athletically as earlier in the 1960s, less agile than when young, and probably already declined from his 1970 version too I guess) when the Brasileiro started, I think Maradona for some of his time in Napoli (1984/85, some of 1988 perhaps) might be argued to be in one phase of prime form (arguable whether other phases were even better from an individual perspective or not, like back in Argentina, or in the 1986 World Cup where he was a Napoli player but he went up a level compared to his 1985/86 general form I think).

On the other hand I guess both could have had similar-ish conditions with respect to fouling (I'm not sure though) but the level of defensive play and the overall competitive level of teams might have been higher in the Italian Serie A I'd think. What I wouldn't be sure about though, comparing these periods, is whether Maradona played any further away from the goal (I think in other words their roles might have been somewhat comparable...although with only a small overlap in the way they played them perhaps with maybe 1989/90 seeing a similar kind of play style/approach from Maradona as the old-age Pele would have had, but other Maradona Napoli seasons earlier on seeing a more dynamic Maradona).

The best maradona is the one in his first season in Napoli

Factors that contributed to this are likely

    1.)His age(he was 24 years old)
    https://builtforathletes.com/blogs/news/what-age-do-athletes-peak

2.)His desire to live up to his then world record fee

3.)He had been healthy for the first time in years after contracting hepatitis in 1982

4.)his career/trophy haul was very unaccomplished even though his talent was never in doubt
He still had a lot to prove

Whether people accept it or not this is how champions think

    3:14

    That is the bottom line

5.)Maradona has not yet succumbed to the night life on offer in Naples
That happened probably after he had won the first scudetto in Napoli’s history and he had become deified

Maradonas better years should of been between 1983-1987

1983/84 was injury ridden and the two seasons after were arguably wasted in a team not befitting his talent

Even so I’d side with Maradona being at his best in 1984/85
10 seasons of his level of dynamic play(with some improved performances vs the better teams in Italy)and I’d have him above any player ever

even though this player never existed I’d propose that the Dynamic virtuoso version of maradona in 84/85 with the big game end product of maradona in 88-90(Serie A and UEFA Cup) would be the highest peak ever at club level
    At least for me

Sadly The tragedy of maradonas unfulfilled talent is the biggest loss in all of football

Unfulfilled even though he won the World Cup with a historic legendary performance

I made some corrections. There is a game against Pisa in 1987 that transfermartk does not count. The match was canceled due to an incident with Renica. The match was won by Pisa, but the Italian federation gave the points to Napoli for the aggression against Renica by a Pisa fan. I also added the goal ratio of both leagues in the time they played.

Pelé's peak was between 1960 and 1965. From 1965 he lost a step, according to one of his contemporaries, Tostão:

In addition, it should be considered that the Santos team in the early 60's was considered much stronger than that of the 70's.

Maradona's best season was Napoli's first, as said carlito86. I just disagree that he could sustain that level for a long time, ten years for example. At 1.65 injuries would always be a risk. And his lifestyle is a trait of his personality. If he was more disciplined, maybe he wouldn't be so aggressive in dribbling, for example.

Yeah, to carry on with a contribution to the discussion following Carlito's post and the subsequent ones on that topic, I'm thinking that for a 12-month period Maradona's 1985 calendar year could be right up there for individual performance level. These are the grades Guerin Sportivo gave him for his Serie A games that year (bearing in mind Italian sources don't hand out high grades very easily and an average of over 7 for a season or likewise calendar year as in this case would be very rare - his 84/85 season average is of course at the very high end too):

Of course it's harder to get an impression for a Pele, but early 60s years, even late 50s years, can probably be in such a conversation. For Cruyff seemingly 1973/74 including the World Cup would be a good call for a 12 month period for example. I guess Messi would be brought into such a discussion, with eg calendar years 2015, 2012 (considering how many goals he got in that year), perhaps 2011 too?

I did actually give my 1985 vote to Platini which might seem at odds with this post, but considering contributions in the highest profile games (European Cup, Super Cup, Intercontinental Cup), plus International level, I think he did a lot to lead to success of his team/s with quality end product (Maradona didn't have the opportunity to play in all these kinds of games of course). Maybe for a calendar year of top individual performances in general Platini's 1983 seems a clearer call than his 1985 even though (at least if not weighing heavily a not-so-great European Cup Final which Juventus obviously lost too, and trimming the selection of games at the edges a bit - he didn't start the 1983 calendar year in great form in January for example), and perhaps 1984 would be brought into it too given the goals tally in the Euros.

When you say discipline are you hinting at professionalism

How is maradonas aggressive dribbling style a byproduct of his lack of discipline
That doesn’t make sense to me

Messi has always been a consummate professional(disciplined)
Hardworking, family orientated and out of the limelight as much as is possible for a player of his standing

But he too was a very aggressive dribbler probably up until 2011

Or maybe you mean if maradona was coached better?
But even then maradona was always a cerebral player first
He didn’t just dribble for the sake of
I mean to say He was Purposeful in his dribbles and not known for ball hogging without purpose

If anything those talentless and jealous defenders hacking his legs were extremely aggressive

Maradona did suffer some serious career set backs due to ankle injuries earlier on in his career but it’s not like he came back a different player after( like Ronaldo nazario)
Or even Van basten(post Ajax he was a different player)

I mean we are here both suggesting maradonas best ever season was literally one year after his ankle was shattered and he contracted hepatitis

    He was resilient as hell

    TOP 1983-84

In this ranking I have taken into account the rankings of the following awards; Ballon d'Or, World Soccer World Player of the Year, Best Player in America (El Mundo), Oscars del Calcio Guerin Sportivo and Onze de Onze, plus my own criteria, which I will explain below, as it is the referent in the ranking in blue. In addition for some players who could not be in the Ballon d'Or for not being European nor in the ranking of "The World" for playing in Europe, I calculated an extra value to compensate for these absences. This is the ranking that I put the first is the ranking that I think should be considered in the purpose of this thread for having a more objective character than the one made by myself.

    1.- Platini (Francia)
    2.- Rush (Gales)
    3.- Tigana (Francia)
    4.- Elkjaer Larsen (Dinamarca)
    5.- Chalana (Portugal)

6.- Schumacher (Alemania); 7.- Rummenigge (Alemania); 8.- Giresse (Francia); 9.- Souness (Escocia); 10.- Bossis (Francia); 11.- Cabrini (Italia); 12.- Olsen, Morten (Dinamarca); 13.- Robson (Inglaterra); 14.- Maceda (España); 15.- Zico (Brasil); 16.- Falcao (Brasil); 17.- Scifo (Bélgica); 18.- Francescoli (Uruguay); 19.- Fillol (Argentina); 20.- Briegel (Alemania); 21.- Jordao (Portugal); 22.- Forster (Alemania); 23.- Bochini (Argentina); 24.- Strachan (Escocia); 25.- De León (Uruguay); 26 .- Renato Gaucho (Brasil); 27.- Rodríguez, Rodolfo (Uruguay); 28.- Dalglish (Escocia); 29.- Voller (Alemania); 30.- Márcico (Argentina); 31.- Dassaev (URSS); 32.- Junior (Brasil); 33.- Schuster (Alemania); 34.- Cruyff (Holanda); 35.- Battiston (Francia); 36.- Burruchaga (Argentina); 37.- Fernández, Luis (Francia); 38.- Arnesen (Dinamarca); 39.- Sigurvinsson (Islandia); 40.- Rossi (Italia); 41.- Romerito (Uruguay); 42.- Miller (Escocia); 43.- Neal (Inglaterra); 44.- Grobbelaar (Zimbaue); 45.- Conti (Italia); 46.- Joao Pinto (Portugal); 47.- Boniek (Polonia); 48.- Ceulemans (Bélgica); 49.- Allofs (Alemania); 50.- Rednic (Rumanía); 51.- McStay (Escocia); 52.- Hateley (Inglaterra); 53.- Lerby (Dinamarca); 54.- Bats (Francia); 55.- Passarella (Argentina); 56.- Olsen, Jesper (Dinamarca); 57.- Shilton (Inglaterra); 58.- Bento (Portugal); 59.- Cerezo (Brasil); 60.- Assis (Brasil); 61.- Gullit (Holanda); 62.- Lawrenson (Irlanda); 63.- Sócrates (Brasil); 64.- Amorós (Francia); 65.- Eder (Brasil); 66.- Lima Pereira (Portugal); 67.- Clausen, Néstor (Argentina); 68.- Leighton (Escocia); 69.- Brady (Irlanda); 70.- Zajec (Yugoslavia); 71.- Gordillo (España); 72.- Nyilasi (Hungría); 73.- Prohaska (Austria); 74.- Gentile (Italia); 75.- Tancredi (Italia); 76.- Archibald (Escocia); 77.- Hoddle (Inglaterra); 78.- Aguilera (Uruguay); 79.- Roberto Dinamita (Brasil); 80.- Qvist (Dinamarca); 81.- Aravena (Chile); 82.- Tacconi (Italia)

In this other ranking, I have based it on aspects such as ratings in different competitions, collective rankings and individual merits, ideal teams from various magazines and awards to the best national or international players. Regarding the awards mentioned in the previous ranking, they are also taken into consideration, but to a lesser extent, especially those awarded to European players for the calendar year. The screening of players and the final order of the same obey exclusively personal criteria according to the above.

En esta otra clasificación me he basado en aspectos como los ratings en las diferentes competiciones, clasificaciones colectivas y méritos individuales, equipos ideales de diversas revistas y premios a los mejores futbolistas nacionales o internacionales. With this one, there are already 64 seasons analyzed as deeply as possible. It is still too early to calculate with an adequate estimate how long it will take me to finish, but as I will reach the season corresponding to the moment I have no more to study, and then I will have to review one by one for specific modifications, I estimate a priori between 2 and 3 years, maybe a little less, maybe a little more.
As a curiosity, I leave a couple of incomplete rankings. On the one hand, the addition of the 5 years up to 1983-84, i.e. 1979-80 to 1983-84, and on the other hand the addition from 1920-21 to 1983-84. These are "beta versions", as I have in mind compensatory improvements to give more justice to the rankings. So for example, making a mental approximation to the 64 years, once I make these corrections, which I consider necessary, I will surely surpass Beckenbauer and, possibly, Cruyff as well. Zico will be surpassed by Puskas and almost certainly by Platini. I will only know for sure in 2 or 3 years. Of course, Maradona's best years had not yet arrived and he will climb many positions in the coming years. For the moment, and in a very provisional way, these are the top 15 from the addiction of scores during the mentioned intervals.
