I suppose the question is this: at what point in Germany in the 1930's was hope for the rule of law to prevent the rise of Hitler OBE, and it became necessary for someone -- anyone -- to do what was needed to prevent the holocaust?

Look up the name "Carl Schmitt" and you'll see what happened to the rule of law in 1930s Germany. Basically, Schmitt, a lawyer and a judge, came up with the legal justifications that made the Holocaust legal.

And to this day, you can find political theorists on the Right and the Left who adopt his work in support of their causes.

Well, Bush had lawyers who also found that black sites and torture were "legal" -- I suppose my question is more about at what point do we say the rule of law is not enough of an excuse to stop us from dealing with Trump? Or is the answer: "We are a nation that respects the rule of law, and we have to accept that it is insufficient to stop Trump, and he may therefore regain power at which point it will be too late. And like Germany, we will have to leave it to some future generation to deal with this problem?

My answer would be that we’re nowhere near that point, but the Constitution is not a suicide pact. He’s the biggest threat to it in 150 years, and let’s be real, many norms (and then some) were broken during the Civil War. Extraordinary times need extraordinary measures.
