Not nearly as stupid as "Italy has been objectively terrible for years" or "if a team can get out of group at the WC then they should be able to qualify from any federation".
It is becoming clearer and clearer that all the players love Berhalter and think he just an amazing coach. Interesting nugget from my chat today with USMNT striker Ricardo Pepi. Asked for a difference between Hudson & Berhalter: “In the attacking third, Anthony has told us that we have more freedom. If you feel & have the capacity to improvise something, he’s going to let you do it” pic.twitter.com/YnuEzcH0wZ— Michele Giannone (@MicheleG3) March 22, 2023
Of course that is what I meant. Just talking about the Euro players. The guys from MLS are just trash. By Yurp do you the third division in Lithuania? Maybe we could define what a world class player is too?
So our talent is 100th in the world but we make it to the R16 more often than not. Holy shit we've had some incredible luck and coaching over the last 21 years.
Anyway if the end of summer timeline is the plan in actuality that bodes well for the eventual pick coming after a substantial search of the European club landscape. I just don't see them settling on Berhalter after he's been out of a job for half a year. Actually I felt Berhalter wasn't coming back the second it was clear he wasn't leading the January camp regardless of how things went with the kicking incident and Gio saga. The faster things come together, though, I think there's more of a chance for another MLS pick or possibly Marsch or Vieira.
Marsch? The guy who failed the moment he wasn't being propped up by a corporate structure that basically pushed his teams to the top of the talent pool in the US and Austria? He's not an improvement on Berhalter at all.
That's another debate. But he's a guy with unique experience (for an American coach) who would want the job and very likely be given attention by the USSF as a serious candidate.
One (among many) of my criticisms of Berhalter is that he was rigid tactically. He’s a freakin’ tinkerer compare to Marsch. Pass
Interesting article on Steffen. He says all the puff piece stuff they were told to say, but he doesn't mention Berhalter directly. He attributes all the rah rah culture BS that was built to the group. If you search the article for the word "praised", it comes up twice where the author interprets tit o describe his comments of Hudson and Carrick, but not Berhalter. https://www.inquirer.com/soccer/zack-steffen-usmnt-world-cup-gregg-berhalter-20230323.html “It doesn’t really feel like a starting-over point,” Steffen said, “because of what we all built: the culture, and the brotherhood, and the playing style, and the work ethic and beliefs and standards that we’ve all created.” Steffen praised interim U.S. manager Anthony Hudson for steering the ship while the U.S. Soccer Federation seeks a new sporting director who will hire the next full-time boss — with Berhalter still among the candidates. “I think being a coach, you need to know your players,” Steffen said. “And you need to be able to relate to them and be able to humanize with them, and be able to listen to them, and know how to push them, and how they work, and vice versa. I think [Hudson] is definitely that type of guy.”
I am starting to get the feeling that this team might go off in these two games. These guys have been shackled in Berhalter's "system" for years, they have to deal with the MLS dead weight, and new guys/Reyna have a lot they want to prove. I am thinking a similar feel to that Honduras game in 2017. It will be combo of just freshness and the fact that getting player selection right is the most important thing for this team. 👀 Gio Reyna was playing in a “central role” in the open media portion of Tuesday’s USMNT practice according to The Athletic’s Paul Tenorio. Score wise we haven’t really dominated El Salvador in a competitive game since the 2013 Gold Cup. Would be nice to see again.
Right, it will have nothing to do with playing Granada and El Salvador @ home. For a guy who thinks so poorly of concacaf, you now think a multi-goal result in these games is meaningful? In anyway? Holy crap. smh
Where did say anything about meaningful? Reading comprehension or maybe just any type of comprehension for that matter seems like a real challenge for some of you folks. Pay attention. We play two crap teams from concacaf. We often struggle on the road against anybody and as someone else pointed out we haven't smashed El Salvador in 10 years. Due to a number of factors, I could see us blowing out both sides... and it means virtually nothing. It would just be nice to watch the usmnt play some entertaining soccer for the first time since 2018. Edit: I do think the new players will highlight how poor the MLS players were and how much it harmed the team.
New York was actually one of the lower spending teams in MLS during his tenure there. It was definitely a case of him doing more with less as opposed to being propped up by Red Bull.
Though Orlando seems to be the place where blowouts happen. 4-0 vs. Panama in qualifying in 2017, 4-1 vs. Canada in Nations League in 2019, 7-0 versus Trinidad in a friendly in 2021, and 5-1 vs. Panama this past qualifying cycle. The other game we've played in that stadium was a 1-0 win vs Ecuador in March.of 2019.
Yeah, the way you explained so succinctly that it’s actually better to miss the WC from Europe than it is to qualify from CONCACAF………..lol.
I’m fairness to him, guys, Italy won the 2020/2021 Euro. I won’t say we could never do that (after all, Greece won that one time) but it’d be a monster upset.
The idea that finishing above Moldova and Cyprus means you are good, but finishing above Portugal, Wales, England, and Slovenia means nothing… Or talk about MLS in a conversation about national teams. I guess that’s why there is an ignore list
OK. Lets change the words. You think a multi-goal result would be reflective of a coaching change? (I think by any use of the English language that is meaningful. However these words are exactly what you said. That because of personnel changes and style changes due to coaching change the team would "go off.") I find that statement absurd.
Funnily enough, I hear people wanting Thierry Henry as manager when he showed interest, saying "he's not an MLS coach, he's outside of the boys club" Despite the fact that: A. His tenure at Monaco was a disaster B. His most recent managing job was.....in MLS. And he wasn't a good manager there either.
