They will be our 4th Spanish opposition in a row: Last group game against Real Sociedad then Barca and Real Betis.

Forgot that Alex Telles is on loan at Sevilla. Am I right in assuming he can't play against us?

Nope, I think he can play. Those loan rules only exist for domestic play I believe.

With Cas suspended the focus will go on who to replace in CM.

However I think the best way to hope to overcome this will be for the likes of WW, Sancho, Antony, Martial etc. to start contributing their share of goals and assists.

Cas offers protection that nobody else in our squad is capable of. So best to accept we will be conceding a few more most likely. What we need to do and should be capable of is out scoring opponents by getting our goal per game above its tepid 1.58.

Sabitzer being available again and in April Martial returning from injury and Eriksen possibly being available April too (according to EtH update) should help. Plus it’s about time our attack started to click better - which having some more offensive #8s and finally another #9 should help with.

Newcastle won this evening. in 90+3 no less. everyone else is finding some kind of form.

bad time for us to stutter in the league. maybe we can regroup over the break

Brighton next if we beat Fulham in the FA Cup.

i.e. potentially a derby in the final if both teams get there

Fun fact: There has never been a Manchester derby in a domestic cup final.

So looking at the two week break and thanks to stretty news, here is the Intl duty break out.

England: Marcus Rashford, Luke Shaw, Harry Maguire and Kobbie Mainoo (U19s)

    - Hopefully Rash starts one game and subs the other. Harry, who cares and Luke, we have adequate backup.
Portugal: Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot
-i don't know what Martinez will look like with Portugal. Maybe @Holy__Joe can comment but I hope they don't get over worked as we have AWB to cover for Dalot but no one to cover for Bruno.

    Brazil: Antony and Casemiro
    - Case actually needs the time to stay fresh and ready. Antony will be a sub anyway so he won't burnout too much and we have options.

Netherlands: Tyrell Malacia and Wout Weghorst
    - WW will likely seem some time but not sure how much under Koemann but hopefully just a game as he needs to stay fresh. Malacia is young and has not been overloaded with minutes so we should be fine regardless of game time.

Argentina: Lisandro Martinez (Alejandro Garnacho received a call-up but was forced to withdraw through injury)
    - Lis is not first choice but I hope he only sees one game as we need him desperately

    Austria: Marcel Sabitzer
    - He hasn't been used by us or Bayern a lot this year so he can use the extra time

    Uruguay: Facundo Pellistri
    - Young, not used much

I'm thinking Martinez is going to be doing a lot of "trying out" of players, at least the assumption about bringing 6 cbs along. Plus Dalot broke through for Santos after Cancelo's underperformance in the WC, so still competition for that place.

Plus no offence to the teams we're facing but hopefully they should be the sort of matches you can make wholesale changes early on.

Was hoping both Bruno and Rashford had an "injury" this morning so they would withdraw...

Suspect with the number of minutes he has played he is probably carrying some minor injuries.

Given the history of how he has been treated by Southgate - delaying his operation for him then getting no minutes in Euro 2020 / scored hat trick only to be dropped in the WC, then he owes Southgate nothing. Actually, probably owes him a few f yous.

That Newcastle game is maybe the most important and can set the tone in terms of the pressure we'll be under in the run-in for top four. It can put us more at ease in having to win Europa too. Hopefully our guys come back from the break in full focus.

I'm not really worried about them, basically because they're so defensive and have just an opportunistic attacking side. If we're solid in the back I believe we can steal a goal late because they're not really built to chase a game.
