Bolded is not correct. Germany has moved to allow dual and it is now on the table for the coalition to expand further. However many people are confused about this topic or don't understand the law changes.

Short version, since 2014, someone born in germany and living in germany, is entitled to hold their second nationality/passport by descent and does not have to opt for one or the other.

Now only jus soli Germans who grow up abroad are required to choose one citizenship
Under the previous law, all children born in Germany to foreign parents and who acquire German citizenship at birth ("jus soli Germans") were required to choose between their German citizenship and that of their parents by their 21st birthday (Optionspflicht). Under the new law, the Second Act Amending the Nationality Act (Zweites Gesetz zur Änderung des Staatsangehörigkeitsgesetzes, Federal Law Gazette I, p. 1714), however, effective 20 December 2014 those jus soli Germans who grow up in Germany or whose foreign citizenship is that of an EU member state or Switzerland may keep both their German and their foreign citizenship.

The new rules intended to accommodate the special situation of children whose parents are foreigners but who grow up in Germany with more than one citizenship.

tldr; a german born citizen can hold a second nationality by descent (e.g one foreign parent). The ones who don't have this advantage are the ones who lived outside of germany their whole life.

This situation that applied to Klose, Ozil etc does not apply anymore.

IIRC for EU nationals the dual citizenship restrictions are different.

e.g I know a welsh guy who has had a german passport in addition to his UK passport for many years. That is allowed for Swiss and EU citizens, who can get dual via naturalisation without giving up their first country. I am not sure of how it works if you were born in germany and are entitled to a second EU citizenship by descent.

This situation showed up post Brexit because many German nationals have been living permanently in the UK but of course never needed to get citizenship. Many of them since got dual.

IIRC Ozil was never seriously looking to play for Turkey

I read some article during that time that despite he rejected Terim's Turkey call up, Mesut still hasn't made up a decision about his future NT. Last ditch effort was by the Altintops , they tell him to "listen to your heart" and persuaded him to play for Turkey.

Yeah - he was one of the top talents so not surprising they tried hard to get him

Partly this situation was caused by a longstanding situation with the Turkish guestworkers from decades ago that is mostly cleaned up. Ozil is 3rd generation. The first generation (grandparents) typically did not naturalise and just have residency. But the second generation, who were often born in germany, or lived in germany all their lives, did not get german citizenship for various reasons including dumb laws.

The situation is much improved these days, but there is also the question that germany is much more Multikulti, with a lot of first generation immigrants having 2nd generation kids, so dual is just a fact of life for football.

Players have long made 'odd' or controversial decisions. e.g Wynton Rufer, who became arguably one of the best strikers in europe at his peak, for some reason opted to play for NZ :ROFLMAO:

This stuff has been getting some attention in rugby lately with the high number of 'south african' players turning out for the home countries but i feel like it is rather the nature of international lifestyles

Especially lots of players get exported to the domestic leagues, so then they turn up in the national sides eventually.

No one really minds until someone turns out to be really good, and then they moan about how he got away.

So in a hypothetical scenario if I moved to Germany and spent the necessary years to apply for German citizenship I'd have to renounce my current citizenship? Excellent, as that's the thing I want the most, to sever all ties with my birth country.

My situation was the opposite. I had to give up my German passport when I became a US citizen back in 1990. I was not allowed to renew it.

yes that is the current situation (if you are not an EU citizen). But the coalition has said they may change this because it is completely stupid.

    yes - its completely dumb.

I know a lot of people with variations of this situation.

The big recent change is that if you did not decide to get a second citizenship but rather are entitled to it automatically via descent then you can keep it. This also leads a stupidity where the kids have dual but one or both parents do not.

had a feeling that my post was gonna get an update from Jitty!!!:D
Although I'm a triple national, I never had this issue to deal with myself so I'm not too familiar with all the updates. But reading this page it seems overcomplicated for no good reason.

So the situation with securing prominent duals in or around the NT in the last couple of years looks like this.

Permanently cap tied to DFB - Musiala, Adeyemi, Moukoko, L Nmecha, Gosens, Baku

Called up to senior NT but not yet cap tied - Berisha, Bella-Kotchap, Thiaw, Schade, Vagnoman, F Nmecha.

Poached - Samardzic, Ozcan, Jakobs, Tillman plus several other younger players.

We will be unable to officially cap tie any more players until June 2024.

add Stanisic to your list too.

yeah I also recall Ozil saying he wasn't far off from going Turkey too. We likely don't win WC14 if he had went to Turkey. I believe in end, he realized far more likely he'll win with Germany.

Joachim Low has shown himself to be a master of convinction others too. If one notices our recent trend of keeping duals got shattered in same time Flick became the coach too. Not coincidence, although he's opening more doors for call ups he's still behind on other facets.

Oh yeah of course. As it turns out Stanisic would have been very useful for the NT right now, despite having very few caps at youth level for DFB (2 with u19’s) and getting very little hype. I guess we are always likely to lose duals in that bracket as if they get too little contact with DFB they are even more likely jump ship. I suppose with a third place WC medal already he probably feels vindicated.

Mario Pasalic & Pongracic are other duals in the current/recent Croatia squads although never played for DFB. Will possibly be joined by other poached youth duals likes Marco Pasalic, Vidovic & Matanovic in the senior team in the not too distant future.

Would have been funny if we’d poached Sosa, given the amount of poaching the other way.

Although Stanisic claims he got goaded by Seb Hoeness in playing for Germany. LMAO how much of that is exaggerating since Balkans like Croatians do love to call any of them playing elsewhere as traitors. And yeah he's never gonna regret his choice either. Can't same same for those who pick Serbia or Turkey etc.

Croatia has basically already poached almost every relevant German-Croatian there is. Not many are left too.

Sosa just comedy, was like GOODBYE CROATIA....OOPS....then tried to sell it like it was a moment of madness etc, LMAO.

Completely agree. He made some glaring errors at the world cup, hopefully he learns from his mistakes and we play to our strengths.

It actually seems to be confusing even for some of the government departments. I think many people just knew the old rule, and aren't up to speed with the changes, because you hear this all the time.

One of the stupidest most meaningless changes ever. Too bad it took a disaster at the world cup for them to get some common sense back.

I already like what Völler is doing here, also credit to Flick for his new approach.

Now we need to see good performances on the pitch and team that is building to be considered one of the top teams again.
