Nice to see you posting again. Also, I agree with you totally. Good for Gilbert and Eric, and of course, if they are that good, why aren’t they getting more minutes for us? And if they aren’t that good, then this will be their only call up. Go Quakesfans!! - Mark
NEWS: Earthquakes loan Gilbert Fuentes and Casey Walls to @AustinBoldFC.— San Jose Earthquakes (@SJEarthquakes) May 3, 2021
Wow! Austin FC Bold! Wouldn’t it be cool if WE had a nearby USL affiliate? We are so freaking lame. If we had any ambition whatsoever, we’d have taken over the Reno operation completely and kept them afloat for at least one more season. Are we going to use Monterey as an affiliate? Or is it too far away for Matías? This is bullshit. We need a minor league team to stash players, to train up guys who are good enough. Even to help guys rehab. And it needs to be OUR team so that we can have them train and coach in the same style as the first team. This is so bleeding obvious. I want to ask WTF is wrong with Fisher, but I think the answer is just that he’s a cheap bastard. And good luck to Gilbert and Casey. Who knows? Maybe we’ll hire a coach from Austin FC Bold after we fire Matías. GO Quakesfans!! Fisher OUT!!! - Mark
"Gilbert and Casey are both very talented young players that possess a lot of quality with bright futures ahead of them. They’re not here just to add depth. They’re here to battle for a starting spot and that competitiveness will only make the entire squad better...— Austin Bold FC (@AustinBoldFC) May 3, 2021 We’ve shown in our short time that we have the ability to develop young talent and having San Jose Earthquakes trust us with two promising players is proof of that...— Austin Bold FC (@AustinBoldFC) May 3, 2021 A special thanks to Earthquakes General Manager Jesse Fionarelli for being so honest and truthful within the process and Bruno Costa for scouting these players and working together with us.”- Marcelo Serrano— Austin Bold FC (@AustinBoldFC) May 3, 2021
Why is it a requirement to have loaned players be in the same "local" let alone the same state? Shouldn't where you loan them to be about where they will get the most minutes, and where hopefully the "style" of play will be the same or similar to what is done at home, and the coaching is solid?
That’s not a bad idea, and if you have a good relationship with the minor league team, then that’s OK. BUT, if you own the minor league team, you can stipulate that they play the same style as the first team. You can require that they train in the same fashion. You can insist that particular players get a lot of minutes. You can coordinate with the minor league team. In this case, we have no prior existing relationship with Austin FC Bold. (AFCB? AFCKB?) I don’t object to us loaning out players. I think it’s necessary. I just want us to be control of those loans, and we could be. We were when Reno was our affiliate. That’s the relationship that I want. What is our relationship with The Bold? Will our guys get the sort of training and preparation that Matías wants them to get? I doubt that very much, because our playing style is rather idiosyncratic. I would be OK with our affiliate being in Reno, or Phoenix, or Omaha, or Florida. But Matías wants our affiliate to be physically near to San José, and he has said so in public. Go Quakesfans!! - Mark
Yup Man United has players loaned out all over Europe. Spain, Italy, France, Germany. I prefer somewhere with an established franchise that hasn't fired their coach recently and gives young players playing time.
Dear Fisher, please buy out his contract and let him go. This is beyond ridiculous. Whatever problems he has is not worth dealing with. He has shown nothing at this level. Use his homegrown slot for someone that is healthy and wants to play. I recommend Alejandro Cano who hasn’t missed a game or Tarun Karumanchi if he’ll leave UCLA early. Stop screwing around with someone that doesn’t want to play. Also, George Asomani has been a huge waste of a roster spot for two years now. He takes up an international slot and hasn’t been healthy enough to play 90% of the time. Move on and replace him with someone from Quakes ii that has earned an opportunity for a first team contract. Please reward the players that play and perform.
#WhereIsGilbertFuentes I asked San Jose Earthquakes Interim Head Coach Alex Covelo about Gilbert Fuentes and Siad Haji. Covelo did not want to comment on Gilbert's personal issue, and he says Siad is recovering from an injury currently. #Quakes74 #MLS— Favian Renkel (@FavianRenkel) July 6, 2022
For those who still wonder about Gilbert, here is a recent picture. He is in a serious relationship and I’m told is very happy. He clearly is not in playing shape and I doubt he will continue a career in playing soccer for money. I’m also told he occasionally posts pictures with a young child so he may be a father or step father. Good for him and I hope he has a bright future even if it’s not with the Earthquakes.
Hopefully he is truly happy if he has decided to not pursue a pro soccer career, at the time of his signing it was a pretty big catch for the Quakes as he had options overseas as well.
His signing also meant the Quakes didn’t offer a contract to Diego Luna. Goes to show you cannot predict the future in youth development. Both were good at the time.
