Koeman explained some of his choices (from Football-oranje.com):

One of the surprising exclusions from the squad was in-form Bayer Leverkusen right-back Jeremie Frimpong. He was part of the World Cup squad but was not selected by Koeman. He explained, “It has to do with the system. He is more right winger than right back. And my right back has to be able to defend very well in the first instance. He has played too few games in a four-man defense. Defending in particular raises doubts in me.”

Koeman also responded to criticism from Kenny Tete after he was left out of the squad, “I have not seen and read it (Tete’s comments).

“I think if there’s one person Tete shouldn’t criticize, it’s me. In my previous period he was also in the picture, apart from his injuries. Now also now that he has been playing every weekend again for a long time. The choice just falls on someone else. We had a pre-selection that was already much larger than usual, because there were a lot of question marks. And Denzel Dumfries is suspended against France. But other players have also been selected who can play right back.”

Koeman said he would call Tete after the international period is over, “Everyone can say what he thinks, within a certain framework. Maybe I’ll give him a call after this international period. Just ask how he is doing now. Like it or not.”

Asked why Blind was in the squad, Koeman told his press conference, “He gets the chance to play his hundredth international match, I think he deserves it. I also told him that he is not the first option as a left back.

“But that I do not rule out that he will stay with the selection. That depends on the further course of matches.”

Stefan de Vrij is not in the squad and Koeman confirmed he had spoken with the Inter defender, “I have spoken with De Vrij why he is not there. There is a lot of competition in his position. Then you look more at playing time than in other cases.”

Koeman is glad he is able to call on Georginio Wijnaldum after his return to fitness, “It became a certainty because he was going to play full matches. Then I had contact and said: if you start playing again, you are still in the picture. I think he has now played four or five full matches. He is fit and important, also for the group. I’m glad he’s back.”

Asked whether he has a striker problem, Koeman said, “We don’t have much choice, maybe in that respect. But within this selection, a number of guys can play well there. Brobbey’s selection indicates that we don’t have many options. You select a boy who is not a starter at Ajax, but someone with a future. If I had several choices in that position, you look at who plays, who has rhythm?”

Asked why Brobbey and not Thijs Dallinga of Toulouse, Koeman said, “Of course we also followed the boys in France. But I chose Brobbey because I want to see him for ten days. I still think he will eventually get better.”

Luuk de Jong was the usual ‘Plan B’ off the bench late in games for Netherlands but now he is not available, Koeman does not see this being Wout Weghorst’s role, “He is absolutely not a Plan B. In my first period that was the reason to choose Luuk de Jong and not Wout. I thought Luuk was a better pinch-hitter. But Wout has developed in such a way that he is a serious option. I see him as a striker, not as number ten.”

Donyell Malen was a late replacement for the injured Steven Bergwijn, despite not being in the provisional squad. Koeman explained, “When we made the pre-selection, he didn’t play. He didn’t even fit in. The last two weeks he has played right winger at Dortmund. In my opinion, Bergwijn was the right winger for me. One of them, at least. I exchange a right winger and bring in a boy who is used to playing in that position as well. Others can do that too, but those are guys who play on the left side.”

    • Koeman sees Frimpong as a right winger, not right back (maybe not good enough defensive?). It is worth to try Frimpong as a right winger (he can cross, drible, score, defend from up high/pressure) rather than Berghuis or Bergwijn (the 2 that we already saw what they can or cannot do).
    • Perhaps he wants to see what Brobbey can bring and maybe Dallinga, Summerville, Frimpong next time? I can only hope.
    • It looks like Wijnaldum will start, same with Geertruida, Van Dijk, Ake, Gakpo. I'm not sure about the rest. Wonder if he goes with Malacia on the left or push Ake to left back and De Ligt to start with Van Dijk. Will he start with Gakpo, Memphis, Malen or Gakpo, Weghorst, Berghuis?
    • I hope to see Verbruggen, either to start versus France or at minimum, start versus Gibraltar, and Simons to start both matches.

I can only guess that Karsdorp and Lang are seen as having "poor attitude" which coach generally don't like. I also see Tete is unhappy and Koeman said that he may call Tete later. I don't hear that Koeman will call Karsdorp or Frimpong, and Frimpong definitely does not have poor attitude, like voicing displeasures in public as the other 2. I hope Koeman will change his mind about Frimpong.

Without Frenkie the speed of play could very well be affected negatively and that’s a very big concern.
I have a bad feeling that Simons won’t start. Koeman just seems to not believe the hype is my thoughts.
I’m thinking if Berghuis starts on the right side of the attack this would be completely stupid because Berghuis is much more a 10.
Frimpong should’ve been selected and tried at the right forward position if he can’t play rightback at a good level for Koeman.
Lang in the Pre selection not brought in after Bergwijn’s injury is curious because Koeman says Lang plays left side but I’ve seen him play both flanks which tells me he’s not happy with him, but Malen who’s been injured a lot himself just played in the past 2 Dortmund matches and he plays all across the attacking areas himself, and now he’s selected for the full squad. Crazy.
I’m not a believer in Wieffer or Geertruida at this stage, but I don’t think Koeman’s looking at the lack of experience as a deterrent especially for Wieffer.
Timber over Geertruida for me at right back based on experience and Timber is a better player with the ball.
Brobbey he seems to have belief in (Future development) and it will be interesting what his thoughts will be after this international period regarding his training habits and work.
Hope he gets a chance to play and get proper service which he does not get much of at Ajax.
Not at all surprised about his feelings of Wijndalum and Gini will need to be good against France especially without Frenkie.
Memphis he obviously trusts but again he’s not played a full match in a long time it seems, and what will the plan be for him?
Weghorst to start is a possibility, but his lack of goal scoring is troubling although he’s been playing the 10 and does not have the service or opportunities coming his way often as everything goes to Rash
Hoping and praying not to see Klaassen or Blind play at all.
To think that Blind can continue is just outrageous to me.
Cillessen in Goal I think too.

injuries has always being a blessing in the sky for dutch team. this is only the time the coaches are forced to change and its often turns out to reinforce the team in long run at least and this is what I'm hoping for this time around. Im having doubts about wieffier but then this is what you want to see, risks gamble and again seeing malen and veerman being called up is great news.
even if the team looses, it will step in the right direction for future selection.

still there can be more improvements with options out there. im hoping karsdorp can be called up in the next vselection given back in the frame at Roma and in the race for CL Next season. this two games should be enough to tell whether both wieffer and veerman are NT material or . if not move on.

any one knows why no Lang? I hope it not to do with him being cocky at times.

same problem as at Ajax; bad attitude and won't play within the system. He had a big spat with ten Hag who told Overmars to send him packing.

Probably the time where Van Gaal asked Lang to play on the right wing and he switched to left wing after entering the match...It is still fresh for Koeman to forget.

I'll be happy with the draw but a loss to France may not be a bad thing. It will force Koeman to reconsider his selection and expedite the rebuild/incorporate younger players more (hopefully :whistling:).

Thanks for sharing. I read his answers and I think it is bad. He basically said i have my favorites and i do not care about your performance to Dallinga and Frimpong. If he consider that Frimpong is right winger, did he also consider that he has more G+A than all his right winger selection? Same for Dallinga, the guy is doing well in Ligue 1 and not being considered because someone who is a bench option at Ajax can get good. Seriously?

Koeman also commented that he was looking forward to see De Ligt from his first period of coaching Oranje. Sounds like Koeman gives De Ligt a vote of confidence.

I am expecting De Ligt to start as LCD... to his credit, he's been picking up his form since World Cup. Ake is the LB (where he's been playing for Man City lately) - he's in a far better rhythm than Malacia (in-and-out ETH's rotation). Virgil van Dijk RCD. Timber RB would be my guess, given his experience/understanding with Virgil. Geertruida over Timber would be quite interesting, if not surprising...

Frimpong for the RW position certainly would make sense, but Koeman’s saying the formation needs to fit the player.
I’m at a loss for this decision. Turns out that Frimpong pulled out injured from Jong Oranje, but again not to be selected based on his form is scandalous.
As for the Strikers Koeman is saying he has the belief that Brobbey is better than Dallinga plain and simple.
I like Brobbey and think he’s full of potential, but not playing enough or starting at Ajax is frustrating for many.
I’ve only seen highlights of Dallinga so I can’t really comment on his qualities and performances.

  19. Brobbey to me is a Benteke kind of player, not a Lukaku kind. I was puzzled that Ajax put down those millions for him. Apart from the fact I would never let a player back in who screwed the club like he did when he left.

  20. Koeman getting flak from several players now about the way he selects the squad. The latest one is Dallinga, who wonders if France isnot in the package to select from as he thinks Branco van den Boomen with his form should be considered.

I am disappointed with Koeman's decision and explanation as well. So Frimpong will not be considered as winger or right back unless we change formation to 5-3-2. And Koeman already said he will use 4-3-3. It means there is no hope for him.

Dallinga is clinical finisher, he is fast and has good movement off the ball. He is interesting option and really deserve the call more than Brobbey. Brobbey's performance has fallen a lot compared to when he first broke into the scene.

We are asking him to come home that is all. He can make the choice but our love is not fickle or fragile unlike the Dutch.
