1-0 defeat. The scoreless streak stretches to 381 minutes, the winless streak to 12 games. Palace have scored 4 league goals in 2023. Arsenal away up next.
Normally you would see 2 teams trying to stay out of the relegation zone so they tend to go all out and surprise better teams. This year, half the league are in the relegation battle and they seem to be trying to out do the others to see how pathetic they can play. Total crap season!
Not surprising to see Vieira sent out. Perhaps Richards will get more of a look with the new manager. Whatever it is, they need a bit of a shake up over there.
The defense has been excellent despite spending the last 2.5 months playing exclusively against better teams; I don't see much reason a new manager will shake that up. They'll rebound just fine once they have an opponent or two in the bottom half, and probably would have done so with Vieira as well. That they let him get this far into this winless run tells me they probably made the decision to sack him a couple of months ago, and want to give the new boss the international break to settle in, with a run of easier games under a fresh face to boost morale.
Richards should have done a better job considering what CBs he would be competing against when moving to Palace. I see no reason why they would bench either of their starting CBs in favor of Richards. He is only getting on the field in an EPL game if an injury occurs or if they decide to go to 3CBs.
I would have to watch the CP games to have an informed opinion, but ... when you are being snowed under by an avalanche of (your own) zeros, strong defense or not, change is necessary, and one conceivable change would be inserting Richards - maybe not a trash-talking smash-mouth defender (like Andersen) or an I'll-stick-to-my-man CB (like Guehi*) - someone capable of making (or at least trying) an incisive, line-breaking pass from the back. If you're going down, go down swinging. ++++++++++++ * Pronounced Gooey, I'm sure.
Yeah, you might want to watch some Palace matches. Andersen is an excellent passing CB. https://theathletic.com/3230219/202...-has-given-crystal-palace-an-extra-dimension/
I'm sure you've seen this ... 🍿 Pendant Liverpool - Crystal Palace (1-1), Joachim Andersen est littéralement entré dans la tête de Darwin Nuñez. 🤯Masterclass de vice du défenseur danois des Eagles. 🦅(🎥 ESPN/Premier League) pic.twitter.com/QvQE8EXy4B— La Pause Foot (@LaPauseFootball) August 16, 2022
I have. Not really sure why you're posting it here, though. I was simply responding to your comment that the new manager at Palace might want to play Richards because he's "capable of making (or at least trying) an incisive, line-breaking pass from the back" and your suggestion in describing the attributes of Andersen and Guehi that they lacked those passing skills. Which, especially in the case of Andersen, is flat out wrong. He's an elite passing CB. "The steepness of Joachim Andersen’s developmental trajectory has always been premised on his ball-playing ability. Although the Dane has other tools at his disposal, his talent for breaking the lines from the defensive third underscores his value tactically and individually." https://breakingthelines.com/player...en-crystal-palaces-danish-defensive-behemoth/
Point taken. I just can't imagine Richards in the clip I posted, though. So maybe it's Guehi who's got to go, or try Richards in front of them, as the six. My point was to try something. Maybe Veira tried everything he could think of and it just didn't work. Hence a new manager.
I didn't get the sense that Vieira was overly negative about Richards. There were a couple circumstances out of their control - that being integrating into the team later & Chris' injuries. It could be a good or bad thing the manager switch. If the new skipper goes 3 at the back, like Glutton mentioned, then it's probably a positive. But that guy may also attach more of a stigma to Americans, given that Vieira coached in MLS. And regardless, Richards was brought in under Patrick, not the impending new guy. Going by ratings, there's some upside here. 1 of Palace's CB's is their top rated player per some metrics. The other guy ranges from sub-par to solid, depending on where you look. Richards actually out-rates him as a starter. Though that's a small sample, and he's had some rough outings off the bench. A set of managers may ultimately prefer Richards.
Richards is probably being positioned for next year as one of the CB's will be sold if they're that good. A year to integrate to the team.
Everton putting up a fight the last few weeks, but nobody seems to really want to separate from the pack. NForrest giving up points today in ET via a PK... Yikes.
