There's obviously a correlation between spending money and doing well, but those promotion spots still have to be earned, and with limited places available, it's still a big gamble - especially if others are also spending. The leagues are littered with clubs who spent big and failed. Unless you have so much cash that you can sign players way beyond the level of the division, it's a huge gamble.

There is no such gamble with buying into a league. It's not like everyone puts bids in, and those bids have to be paid regardless of whether the club is accepted or not.

In the last World Cup in 2019 they lost 45-7 to England, 33-9 to France, 47-17 to Argentina and 31-19 to Tonga., making them one of only two teams to lose every game. So definitely well behind the better second-tier countries such as Argentina and Japan.

There's plenty of gamble, especially below MLS level ... P/R folks like to talk about the clubs that go bust here due to our system ...

i bet everything football will not be global sport or 1 in usa. i mean i do not believe anything american media say from politics to race to sports. i mean espn is trying to convince me that last few years they ratings was bigger then before pandemic. i mean in last decade 40+ million people cut cable or more and if you look at advertisement papers no ads for dish direct v or compast they just gave up but somehow they had record years in viewership at espn cable channel

Qualified for 8 out of 10 World Cups, but an all-time record of 3-26, never advancing past the group stage.

Let me guess, in Rugby the US relies on small smart players trying to keep the ball with a lot of ball movement and get pummeled by countries that give it to the big fast player :ROFLMAO::D:cool:

It was Mr. Luckhurst who informed me - along with the rest of his television audience - that the United States qualified for the 1990 World Cup. He almost pronounced Paul Caligiuri's name right, getting the soft g but pronouncing all three i's.

Might as well say a charity is the same as an oil company because they both deal with money. And nobody rights a check to the prem.

How ever much you want to claim they are the same thing they aren't. Here is the current top six in the championship with their wage bill rankings next to them. Let everyone draw their own conclusions.

    1. Burnley (2)
    2. Sheff U (5)
    3. Boro (8)
    4. Luton (20)
    5. Millwall (19)
    6. Watford (1)

You can watch four NFL games a week with an Antenna. Not sure people realize that for all the NFL's greed (and they are as greedy as they come) the most important games are almost always over the air. And if you live in a market with an NFL team those games are always over the air even if the national broadcast is on cable or Amazon.

but that is another think with cable they can not say 50 million watched because there is not that many espn cable subscribers but with antenna they can say when 300 million have antena we did research and nfl is 28% males favorite sport it has to be that 60 million watched cincinate vs kc. american ratings is just bs when tv is about.streaming on other hand could be accurate and soccer is beating nfl

That's not true. The EPL has dues ... literally.

Hell, the FA has "membership fees" and "subscription fees" LOL https://www.thefa.com/-/media/files...ividual-sections/fa_handbook_2022-23_v11.ashx

So three of the top 6 are comprised of top 5 wage spenders ... imagine that.

Burnley was also top in transfer spending, Sheff was 7th, Boro was 5th, Luton 10th, Millwall 8th, and Watford 2nd https://www.transfermarkt.us/championship/einnahmenausgaben/wettbewerb/GB2

Now how's that table look with ALL OF THE SPENDING picture is accounted for? Correlation is quite different than just the piece you tried to show.

    WHAT?

There are 15 players on a rugby union team and 13 on a rugby league team. I won't go into the details on the different laws between union and league but personally I prefer union.

Or maybe she can think for herself and is not a zealot for only one system. I’ll go with that one.

Funny how whenever the idea of not having P/R somewhere outside of the U.S. we get some combination of "blame the American" and "no true Scotsman" fallacy...

Or maybe she is conveniently glossing over the fact that three (?) closed women's leagues have folded in the US in recent history and two of the teams she worked for in the US have folded?

If only they had Pro/Rel from the beginning they would have never folded. Entire communities would pack the stadiums because of Pro/Rel.

Or maybe those negatives don’t outweigh the positives she’s encountered as someone who actually has pro experience in both ways to structure a league.

Two D1 US women's league's folded. The current one is in year 11 and is seeing substantial growth.

The only US team she worked for that folded was the unfortunately named amateur team Long Island Lady Riders,. The other team she worked for, the Chicago Red Stars, are still in business despite their original league folding.

Can't read the paywalled article, but I suspect her comments in context are more like there are different ways of doing things that are valid, and not so much demanding that the WSL close off pro/rel. Good clickbait fodder with the pull quote, though.
