I like Jack’s play. He always tries to move the ball forward and he’s not afraid to get stuck in. Combines well with others. I’m glad that he’s still with the team. But he’s not likely to get a lot of minutes this season, unless we move someone.

I agree, I thought he was ready for more minutes last season, but we were trying to put the pieces back together. Pretty frustrating watching his glacial development with the Quakes. I think he has a well rounded skill set…works hard, with a fair amount speed. What we saw from him last season should have easily put him above Gregus and at least shared some of the Remedi’s minutes…I really don’t understand it, we’ve put so many jokers on the field the last two years with Skahan perpetually waiting for his chance…and it will be even more difficult with the team upgrading with Gruezo.

So, when are we re-signing Jack?!

I fear that this delay means that Jack does not want to re-up with us.

That’s just wild speculation on my part. I’ve no information on that at all. I just fear that the delay means that he wants out.

    Go Quakesfans!!

Where’s he going to go? Try to get a gig overseas? He just barely started to get his career untracked here. Who’s going to sign a guy with 712 minutes, 2g, 1a in 5 years?

He could try other MLS teams or second divisions overseas. What if he’s just sick of San José? The culture of this team is not great. He might just want out. It might also be that he’s demanding a lot more money, or more minutes.

Mostly, I’m just concerned that we haven’t re-signed him yet.

Why would he try different MLS teams? It’s unlikely he’s going to play, or certainly not a given. We started giving him minutes last year. We had a good thing going, for both him and us. The obvious thing to do would be to give him a healthy raise and let him build on that. He was on the cusp of “making in”, all arrows pointing up. It makes no sense to toss that away.

There’s nothing wrong with “the culture” of the club. The players get along, and there are some really good, positive coaches. Luchi praised Jack several times last season, probably more than any other player except Espinoza. I could see that he could have been frustrated about lack of chances, but that was fixed last season. If it weren’t for injuries he’d have had a lot more playing time as well.

The players may like each other now. But ownership is dysfunctional.

We haven’t won anything in ages.

Some of Ian’s guys from Reno landed in Minnesota, so he could try there. Plenty of MLS teams saw him up close and might be interested. He might want to go overseas.

There’s a million reasons he might want to bail. Maybe he has a girlfriend who lives elsewhere?

Just because it makes sense to us, and because we want him to stay doesn’t mean that it makes sense to Jack. If it did, he’d be signed by now.

Maybe he tries to go to Nashville.

Players do leave clubs for reasons all the time even when there isnt a visable issue.

Dudes also a super conservative he probably hates San Jose / Newsome / California.

But we will see what happens. I hope he stay's but lets be honest. Dude aint going to be the rrason we win or lose.

Please these guys are scraping to make a living playing soccer, they don’t care if we haven’t won a championship! A guy like Skahan should *want* to play for a lesser team right now. That way he’s going to get a chance.

A guy like Skahan could actually be the reason we win or lose because he may be a very high value player (performance / cost). You want to accumulate as many high value players as you can. That’s the name of the game in salary-capped MLS.

I don’t see another team signing Skahan for a significant raise based on 712 minutes in 5 years, It would have to be someone really astute who’s poring over the very limited game tape. We know him and his potential way more than anyone else and should be the most likely to hone him a big raise.

Most likely reason would be some personal reason, wanting to get back close to home (Tennessee).

We could double his salary or more and he should be happy with it. As I just added the most likely reason would be wanting to go back closer to home (Tennessee).

I look at the Skahan thing like this. You've been in a band for 4 years, struggling, about to give it up, but then suddenly you have a couple of hits and your label is going to up its promotion of the band - send you out on tour and fund the next album. Looks like you're finally going to make it!. But instead of cashing in on your new found success to see where it takes you, you quit that band and join some other band, with uncertain outcome. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

There’s just too many unknowns here.

It makes sense that we would try to sign him, but we haven’t. So it’s likely (but not certain) that the hangup is on Jack’s side. And we have no idea what that might be. Maybe he wants to leave? Maybe he just wants more money than we’re offering.

    We really can’t know.

I hope like hell that we sign him.

    Go Quakesfans!!

My best guess is that they’re haggling over the details, like $50k. We know that CL is a pretty ruthless negotiator for the lower end players. They cut TT’s salary by 60% last year and may have cut even more if possible this year. I’d rather that he was a ruthless negotiator on the high end players so that we’re not effectively paying a player like Gruezo $2.6M per year.

Tell that to 95% of athletes, that logic is so rare these days.

California is way way way too liberal for Jack, eventually that guys gonna want out. Just because a coach likes a guy doesn't mean he will be kept.

I hope we keep Jack, but if we lose Jack, we don't lose much other than a spot starter and bench guy.

I am going to assume if we don't keep Skahan, its because we picked up Mendoza.

Not convinced that politics would make a guy want to leave a club. I think cost of living could be a more likely factor.

Anyway, thinking more about the Skahan situation, he is not yet eligible for free agency and he was not in the re-entry draft, meaning that the Quakes must have given him at least a "bona fide offer", which is a 15% increase over his previous salary. So I guess that means he either plays for the Quakes or another team trades for him? Not totally sure how that works. Of course what should really have happened is that they offered more than a 15% raise, but we don't know if that happened. Let's assume that happened and he still doesn't want to sign. I guess that means the Quakes can try to trade him or he goes and plays in another league.

Doesn’t Skahan live in SF with his girlfriend? Seems like he’s fine with the Left Coast.

I wouldn't be surprised if he wasn't already on the roster and shows up on camp day 1.

I don't think the politics would drive him away either. But wouldn't surprise me either. I don't think any of you in your life time ever thought the Capital would be stormed, or Eddie Robinson turning into a complete pile of shit.

This seems very likely. Our FO has never been good about informing us in a timely manner. It's hard to see us letting him go with how strong he played coming off of the bench and getting the occasional start. He makes $88.2K, so 15% only brings him up to $101.4K and is young with lots of upsides.

I went to the mlssoccer roster site just to see if by any chance they were keeping a running list of team rosters (they're not - it's last year's roster), but I was surprised to learn that Oskar Ägren leads the team in goals, assists, and appearances right now! And he looks like he's about 12 in the photo. But hey, he's our team leader!!

True they haven't even done the thank you posts to the players that are not returning unless if they already were announced by other teams
