Jovelic called up for the Serbia team that will play the USMNT at Banc of California Stadium on Jan 25. Nice to see him get an opportunity. Two more MLSers called up by Serbia: LA Galaxy forward Dejan Joveljic and Vancouver Whitecaps CB Ranko Veselinovic.Joveljic, 23, has 13g/5a in 1700 MLS minutes.Veselinovic, 23, has been key starter for Vancouver's defense for three seasons, with 69 starts. https://t.co/2z2r3M8ktG pic.twitter.com/0RBlsdFvuC— Tom Bogert (@tombogert) January 11, 2023
Cienfuegos named an asst coach for El Salvador Men’s Nat’l team Mauricio Cienfuegos has joined Hugo Perez's El Salvador MNT coaching staff. Hugo's son, Gerson, has returned to U.S. to take position at @ChicagoFire in MLS. #LaSelecta https://t.co/yzEVxdfx3j— Paul Kennedy (@pkedit) January 22, 2023
I am sure Cienfuegos will certainly add to the Salvadoran nats plan going forward. Good for Mauricio. I wish we had somebody like him to mix it up with Riqui. Two small but powerful dynamos making Galaxy hum!
If Chicharito is still motivated to get in the picture for 2026 with Mexico (and a new coach), that's probably good news for the Galaxy. I was worried his level might drop now that he missed out on the 2022 WC. Whether it's realistic for him to still be in contention is another story, but he certainly could still get called up for Nations League or Gold Cup or something like that. https://t.co/D9UrIktn6R— Lizzy Becherano (@lizzy_becherano) January 24, 2023
Anybody know a little about Jesse Marsch and his style of play? He got sacked so we might be looking at the next USAMNT coach. Not that he has any experience at this level but he is American and with this federation's penchant to push from within, he might just get the gig. In any even, he has alot more international experience than Gregg and may better suit the team and where they need to go. "Jesse Marsch has been fired by Leeds United after less than a year as the club's head coach. The sacking, which Leeds confirmed on Monday, comes less than 24 hours after a 1-0 defeat at Nottingham Forest left the club in 17th place, level on points with 18th-place Everton, on the brink of the English Premier League's relegation zone. Marsch, a Wisconsin native, had ascended to heights previously untouched by American coaches in European soccer. When he took the Leeds job last February — after climbing the Red Bull ladder, from New York to Salzburg in Austria to RB Leipzig in Germany — he became the second U.S.-born Premier League manager ever. And he quickly outlasted the first, his mentor Bob Bradley, who in 2016 lasted less than three months at Swansea City."
Marsch likes to play a high-tempo, pressing style. Win the ball and look to create scoring opportunities as quickly as possible, not really worrying about possession. It's not always the most attractive to watch but the Leeds games that I watched while he was coaching were always entertaining!
Marsch doesn't have to be THE guy to take us to the 2026 WC. All he has to do is walk us in the general direction while we assess the team and his work. As I mentioned before there will be no qualifying run so where that constant grind and polish will come from and who sets that up is important. At this point, I do not trust the USSF at all.
Isn't the old guard of USSF gone now? Is it Parlow (am I remembering that right??) making the decisions? I could Google it but I know some of you know the real inside scoop.
I read that Parlow will hire a GM first,, who will then hire the coach, She said she expects the process to take months - end of summer maybe.
Since we don't have to qualify, I'm all in favor of taking their time and cleaning up this mess and bringing in a new regime top to bottom that are the best hires - not the quick and easy hires.
Well, two things. Is the old guard gone? Two relatively new guys to the system are gone. The old guard is still there, whomever the shot callers are. Which brings me to the question of why did Stewart and why did McBride leave? Both within a week of each other. What did they come to see and/or realize to make them grab their hat and head for the door? Something's fishy.
Yeah, I just don't know who truly decides who is being considered and hired? Who are the board members that have a say in all the hires? What is the process?
Earnie Stewart is staying on as the Sporting Director until February 15, then he will be join PSV Eindhoven. This explains why he is leaving, but I haven't really heard a good explanation as to why McBride left (although I wouldn't want to stick around either based on all the recent drama). This article from US Soccer gives some insight to the process they are going through and who the decision makers are: https://www.ussoccer.com/stories/20...-returns-to-netherlands-to-join-psv-eindhoven
It sounds like Ernie left because he had an opportunity to work with PSV Eindhoven, return to his homeland and be close to his family. That just makes a lot of sense. It is not clear why McBride left but the article Galvanator linked claims the two departures were unrelated to each other and to the on-going review of soccer operations. Who knows on that one. The awkwardly named Sportsology Group is in charge of that "top down holistic review of US Soccer's entire sporting department in order to establish the operational road-map and strategy that ensure ... it is well-positioned to realize its vision for the future and support its ambitions during this pivotal time for the sport in the United States." (You have to love the corporate-speak word salad bingo that is the native tongue of consulting firms world-wide.) Sportsology Group will also initiate the search for the US Men's NT Coach AND consult in the search for a new Sporting Director. I assume either Parlow or US Soccer CEO JT Batson will pick the new SD, who will then select the USSMNT coach. tldr summary vers: Consulting firm Sportsology Group, an all-sports consulting firm from Manchester, England will simultaneously: a) perform a top down review of USMNT's "sporting structure" suggesting changes as needed, b) head the search for a new Sporting Director, and c) Initiate the search process and construct a slate of potential candidates for a new USMNT coach. Then CEO JT Batson and/or USSF President Parlow will select the next Sporting Director. Finally the new Sporting Director will hire the USMNT head coach. Sounds like US Men's Soccer future depends on the competence of Sportsology, Batson and Parlow.
This is suboptimal. If Chicharito isn't back, we'll have Preston Judd and ? at striker 🇷🇸 Dejan Joveljić has been called up by the Serbian National Team for its Euro 2024 qualifying matches. Games will be played on Mar. 24 and 27. He'll miss LA's game in Portland next weekend. #LAGalaxy pic.twitter.com/fJ3OpiY4Z3— Alex Ruiz (@AlxRuiz15) March 17, 2023
I predicted striker depth was going to be an issue this season due to 34yo Chich’s injury likelihood and a very heavy 2023 schedule. Of course if Judd is productive the problem goes away and I really hope that comes to pass. But given his career total of 0 first team goals realying on this happening is risky business. “Wouldn’t be prudent”, as a former White House occupant was fond of saying.
True. But if you look at the last two USL seasons and had to pick one striker from the entire league based solely on stats to bring up to our first team, you'd pick Judd.
And if you looked in the years before that Ethan Zubak and Augustine Williams would be your guys. Go back farther and it would be Jack McBean. We must lead the league in developing USL+/MLS- strikers.
Good point. BUT— I’d have to check the stats but I don’t think either of those other guys had TWO consecutive seasons like Judd had.
I know nothing about Judd's stats. I just know that most successful first division strikers tear up second division games. (I was today years old when I realized that "tear up" meaning depends entirely on pronunciation!)
The moment Zavaleta came off, Pepi scored. Coincidence? I think not. Very proud of this ES performance. They’ve been great defensively, but absolutely no offense.
