I sure hope he’s right about re-enforcements. We’re 3 weeks out now and there isn’t so much as a rumor floating around. It’s making me a little uncomfortable.

The cynic in me says this is a power play by AEG to say “see without Klein we won’t be able to sign anyone”. The realist knows AEG doesn’t have that level of foresight or competence.

Vanney does explicitly say there will be signings in the next few weeks. Here is the transcript:

"I think in terms of players coming in we'll start to start to take place here over the next few days to weeks we'll start to be adding in some of the positions that maybe we lost over the off season so some of that progression will happen as well the group continues to move forward"

One of my complaints about Vanney is his overuse of vague generalizations. I've mentioned it a couple times but never had a real example to illustrate what I mean. Since Youtube provides transcripts of it's auto-captioning I now have a live example caught in the wild:

Q: What are you hoping to see from the team this weekend?

Greg starts out well with "Well I think just progress Fitness wise first and foremost."

But then we get this, which is exactly like every halftime interview he has ever given when asked about what changes need to happen:

"I think the things that that teams and players need to continue to work through ... is how quickly you transition from one phase to the next phase right. As you're getting your legs under you and you're getting your minds in that concentration mode for 90 minutes you got to get from one play to the next you know and keeping our tempo up our relationships on the field in terms of working together for the things that we want to accomplish. Uh staying connected as a group all these things the guys will get sharper as things go. Things will come off a little cleaner as we continue to go but it's just laying down that consistent play-to-play action-to-action work that that you want to get under your legs. And you want to get that that also that concentration and focus under your belt. That's what I feel like preseason is about getting a lot of that underway and then the season as you get going obviously the team will get better and things will start to to gel more as guys continue to get used to each other but it's a group that by and large everybody's pretty comfortable with each other as we add pieces in then we'll have to integrate but right now the guys are pretty helpful."

So basically Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger?

To be honest - if I was a coach I would never give away anything meaningful or important to a journalist. Although I'm sure I'd be more of a smartass to them in the Bruce Arena mold.

I may be wrong about this but my experience is that the great coaches (not just soccer, also in NFL and CBB) notice specifics and often are open about them at halftime. It's not really giving anything away to say you are going to address a specific problem. It is my impression (again, maybe I just imagine this) that the weaker coaches repeat the boiler plate answers like "have to play faster, be sharper in the final third." One reason is that weaker coaches often think that way and address their players that way. But it is almost worthless bc it's the equivalent of "need to play better." I prefer "They have been overloading our left side so we are going to have to adjust for that." or "Our wingbacks need to alternate their runs, they are both pushing up and leaving us vulnerable to counters - we will address that at half."
Or if it is Bruce it's, smirking, "What do you think, since you guys seem to know it all? Got nothing? Fine. Can't miss simple headers like that and expect to win." :)

Our only new link is that Vanney is testing out another old friend from Toronto FC.

Meanwhile, this is how quickly LAFC have moved to replace Cristian Arango, who was sold six days ago:

    Here's to hoping Vanney is just a world-class leak-preventer.

I come on here and check the red # that indicates new messages, but also likes, etc. When it is 15+ I get excited yet again - finally, a new signing!?!?

But noooo.... It is inevitably just us (me) (justifiably) bitching about the sorry state of our club and then us agreeing with each other. :(

Please, powers that be -- can you just give me some reason for a smidgen of hope that this season will be better than the last 8?:thumbsup:

    Puig is all I got.

But he needs good wingers to destroy this league, imo.

More depressing news, according to Doyle,

"Look, I’ve been spamming the Extratime group text with my theory that there is no new DP winger of any sort on the way, and that the actual third DP has been there all along: It’s Riqui. I bet we’ll get an explanation at some point that it makes the most sense, from a cap flexibility standpoint, for the Galaxy to move him into that slot"

I thought something might be up with Carlos Harvey when I saw Noble Okello on the bench (a DM). Harvey is also listed as on loan on the roster, which could be leftover from last year, but since they have updated the roster in other respects, including removing the international designation from Coulibaly and adding the new signings, it seemed that Harvey might indeed have been loaned out.

In terms of Auba, I look at it like I view the Bale signing for them. They can afford to take a risk on a player because they have a solid roster.

We can’t. We need every signing to HIT.

Tyler Boyd is an interesting option. I like it! Just gotta wait for the @skydog report.

Looks like there's gonna be lots of new faces on this team soon. Hopefully most are decent to good but man, I am not betting the farm. I would not be offended if they get some known body with known or highly established abilities. Give me some hope! I am running low. images-4.jpg

Boyd is 28 and a career left winger who has played most of his professional career in Portugal and Turkey's first divisions. New Zealander/American he was raised from ages 1-10 in Santa Ynez so he's returning home so-to-speak. If he's the Grandsir TAM replacement he seems like a pretty safe bet.

We’ve been linked to him in the past I believe. Seems a solid signing (absent any financial details).

Here are stats for 27yo Tyler Boyd for the prior two seasons ('20-21 split between two clubs):

    Code:
Year Squad MP Starts Min Gls Ast Gls/90m
    2020-2021 Beşiktaş 4 4 315 1 0 0.29
    2020-2021 Sivasspor 14 8 726 5 0 0.62
    2021-2022 Rizespor 29 23 1770 2 2 0.10

Over those two seasons he made 47 appearances, including 35 starts, and scored a total of 8 goals and 2 assists. On a per 90min basis he has averaged 0.34 goals and 0.06 assists. The average of 0.34 goals/90m might be borderline acceptable for a depth forward but it is worrisome how he achieved that. He was decently productive in 20-21, but last season, across a decent sample size of 23 starts, his output plummeted to just 0.10 g/90m. That translates into only 3 goals per season for a full time starter, playing thirty 90 minute games.

I say forward because this guy only has 2 assists in 47 games , so I don't see him being helpful anywhere else. That is dismal and makes Grandsir look like Kevin DeBruyne. It is even worse than Cabral, yikes!

Hard pass for me. Which means we will scoop him up.

To me, the positives are he's a domestic, he once was considered promising, and he may come cheap as a reclamation project. The negatives are that he's had to move around a bunch even when he was modestly successful and he was frozen out the first part of this season. If the price is right, the change to more favorable scenery might be the cure for what ails him.

Where are you getting those club stats? Wikipedia shows 35 lifetime club goals across all competitions and fbref shows 25 goals and 13 assists total.*

*For some reason fbref doesn't include his time loaned to Vitoria's B team which played in Portugal's second division.

This is just sad. The guy had 2 goals & 2 assists last year despite getting the most playing time he has ever had in a season. In his best year (age 23) he only had 6 goals and 4 assists!

Our FO never learns. They are a gd joke. Too bad because with Puig, Chich and Dejan we could actually be a very good team. If this crap continues to be our big signings I will be so depressed.

He definitely hit a slump starting in 2020. I guess the question is whether a change of scenery to MLS will revive his career or end it. Hopefully we aren't spending too much to find out - and the fact that he's domestic and doesn't use up an international slot is huge as it still leaves us the room to bring in another winger.
