She doesn’t strike me as a prolific scorer in the league so far, though I guess we aren’t even half way through the season. She still has more to prove in Japan. I think going abroad now would mean leaving for a team that’s much worse than Beleza. Depends on how she does this season.

Set as a strikier along England upfront, Iwabuchi was forced to drop deep in order to see any ball at all. She was trying really hard to invite her teammates into game that was more than 3 passes and and then a long kick but aside from Spencer there were almost no takers. As her technical skills, vision and link up play were clearly 2nd to none in Spurs team - she was moved to the midfield line for 2nd half. I give it a month... after which she will be demoted from striker to playmaker role permanently.

Man City, West Ham, Liverpool and very soon Tottenham - 4 clubs in FA WSL with Nadeshiko as playmakers :coffee:

Meanwhile Serie A Femminile has two Japanese players in top positions. :giggle: Both Mana Mihashi and Moeka Minami played full games this week-end and their teams had resounding wins: yesterday, Inter won the derby vs Milan by 4-1, while Roma has beaten Sassuolo today by 5-0.

Roma leads the rankings alone, while Inter is at 4th place. :coffee:

Dangerous destination though: from what I hear of the market season in USA, North Carolina Courage looks like an almost dismantling team; they have lost some of their best players, including Debinha to Kansas City (And Fuka Nagano have left to Liverpool: they are now singing Miura who could be arguably seen as a downgrade to Nagano), and the ones they have signed mostly seem a tad weaker than the ones who left, or anyway not enough by themselves to change the trend of the team.

I could be wrong, but frankly I see the Courage in the bottom of NWSL, especially if the expansion-teams that are rumoured to join next season will be big spenders on the market.

I’ve heard from Alex Bishop that Juventus were interested in Hana Takahashi before she was injured but Urawa weren’t willing to let her go. Understandable since Urawa are short on defenders as it is. I like that Urawa are willing to reject offers from Europe if they view a deal as unfavorable. Although Takahashi may leave anyway after her contract expires and she recovers.

Also if any are interested the WE League Cup Draw will take place in 2 hours.

Today's Setsubun - day before the beginning of spring in the old calendar in Japan (the name literally means 'seasonal division'), though not the official New Year, was thought of as similar in its ritual and cultural associations of 'cleansing' the previous year as the beginning of the new season of spring. Setsubun was accompanied by a number of rituals and traditions held at various levels to drive away the previous year's bad fortunes and evil spirits for the year to come.

One of the traditions associated with the observance of Setsubun is mamemaki ritual. (bean scattering) this ritual sees roasted soybeans (known as fukumame (福豆, "fortune beans")) either thrown out of the front door, or at a member of the family wearing an oni (demon or ogre) mask while shouting "Devils out! Fortune in!"

In Poland, we celebrate a tradition called the Drowning of Marzanna (or Morana) where effigy of the goddess Marzanna, is ritually burned and/or drowned during an early spring rite called Jare Święto (20-21 March) - to hasten the approach of spring. (Be gone death (winter)! Plentiful harvest come!)

Marzanna is a pagan Slavic goddess associated with seasonal rites based on the idea of death and rebirth of nature. She is an ancient goddess associated with winter's death, rebirth and dreams.
In ancient Slavic rites, the death of the Goddess Marzanna at the end of winter becomes the rebirth of Spring of the Goddess Lada, Vesna or Kostroma (Russian) representing the coming of Spring.

The effigy of the goddess is usually made of straw, wrapped in white cloth and adorned with ribbons and necklaces. Traditionally the effigy has initially been carried past every house in the village by a group of children holding green juniper twigs. During this procession Marzanna was repeatedly dipped in every encountered puddle or stream. In the evening the effigy is passed to the young adults; the juniper twigs are lit, and thus illuminated Marzanna is carried out of the village, burned, and thrown into water.

    Yokoyama Kumi interview

Not easy to understand with auto generated subs, auto translate to English. Sounds like she wants to help get Belle back to winning ways, fighting for the championship and scoring 30ish goals this season.

I'm curious if Ikeda will call up Mana Iwabuchi to the squad for the She Believes Cup. Unfortunately, more than a year's break without playing ball has done its job - Iwabuchi is completely out of shape. Will Ikeda take a risk and bet on her in the hope that she will come to form by the World Cup? I wonder.. :coffee:

There was a similar situation before the 2019 World Cup when Takakura bet on Yokoyama, and the latter turned out to be completely out of form during the tournament.

Barely anytime on the field + a surgery is hard to get back from but even then, these performances recently have been surprisingly poor. They’re so poor that I’m wondering whether she’ll ever be her best self again. She is clearly frustrated too with the way was picking a fight with Carter.

I don’t think Ikeda watches the WSL closely so he probably will call her up for the SBC. After that, I’m not so sure… but I don’t think she’ll be of any use at the WC in her current form.

Two wins for the Japanese players in Italy this week-end:

    - on Saturday, Como-Roma 0-1; Moeka Minami played the full game. Roma secured the 1st place in the regular season;

    - today, Inter-Sassuolo 3-0; Mana Mihashi also played the full game against her former team; Inter is 4th-placed, but Fiorentina and Juventus, level at 2nd place, are just 2 points ahead.

    Highlights of the games:

Fuka Nagano vs Reading. She had a really good game. Had the crowd cheering for her. I've noticed she does tend to run out of stamina after about 70~80minutes though.

Maybe you've already seen it but I also found this from last year.

I don't always know how to interpret these graphs but data seems to favor Minami.

I though she played alright in the first half against Chelsea, but her second half was terrible. I am not sure why they kept her on so long. She looked pretty tired by about the sixty minute mark. If she can get more match fitness then I imagine she will improve.

But I have been wondering whether Nadeshiko actually need her the way she plays and the way they play now. I still like the idea of her coming off the bench for Nadeshiko, but she needs to play regular football and just play better.

My issue with Minami has always been her defending, because she has at times done some very strange things. But last season when she played for Urawa I thought she was solid. She has always been good on the ball and a pretty good passer and I think clubs in europe are looking for defenders who do not panic so much on the ball.

I think she is a fair representation of Japanese defenders, and because of this I have been wondering when a few more defenders might leave the WE League in the future, especially the taller ones.

But what do I know about defending? My pick from last season - Takashige - has been really bad.
