Because I don't think it is selective outrage. I don't think they are upset about one thing but then don't get upset about the same thing in another context. In reality they are not upset about it at all. Instead, they are feigning outrage. They are putting on an act, a performance. They are doing it for dramatic effect, not because they actually care. It's a tactic they use to attempt to win voters concerned about those issues, or at least to cause Democrats to lose voters concerned about those issues. It's pretending to be concerned about racism, anti-Semitism, homophobia, etc when they really don't give a damn and actually actively support the racists, anti-Semites and homophobes. A classic example is when Matt Gaetz became outraged when a Louisiana congressman was talking about how Republicans didn't understand or care about the situation of black teenage males being killed in America. Matt Gaetz in his outrage condemned the congressman, supposedly taking great offense at the comments. He explained that he has a son who is a person of color so he knows exactly what it's like to worry about a teenage child who is a person of color in America. And how dare the Louisiana congressman assume that Matt Gaetz doesn't know what it's like! Of course, he doesn't have a son who is a person of color, he doesn't even have a son. He has also done nothing since to help black teenage males. His outrage was for performative reasons, nothing more and nothing less. It wasn't selective, it was performative.
More anti Semitism A man threw a Molotov cocktail at a New Jersey synagogue in an arson attempt on Sunday morning, police and the synagogue said. The suspect lit and threw a Molotov cocktail at the front door of Temple Ner Tamid around 3 a.m. and fled the scene, Bloomfield police said in a news release. The bottle broke, but did not cause any damage to the building, police said. https://www.cnn.com/2023/01/29/us/new-jersey-molotov-cocktail-synagogue/index.html
Great visual from Luckovich as usual. But he needs to drop the word, "Black" from his cartoon. She's not learning any history at all, other than alt(ered) stuff.
Hampton Roads Transit is offering free bus service today in honor of Rosa Parks. I’m not sure how to feel about this. I guess it’s better than Black History Month themed police cars.

I wish that the 1619 Project show on Hulu hadn't fluffed Stacey Abrams 5 minutes into Episode 1. That made it all too easy for skeptics to dismiss the show, and thus the whole history project, as Dem party propaganda. I mean, if I were watching a purported history show and some GOP politician got blown early in the show, I would be switching the channel immediately. And maybe not even returning to the network. An own goal, bigtime.
Skeptics will dismiss and dissent regardless. Its well past time to stop tiptoeing around their blatant conservatism. We are in a war, and nobody else is coming to join us no matter what we do. We know what kind of world we want, and they don't want that kind of world.
What @Auriaprottu said. Stop thinking we can convert these people. It is not our words or voices that count. It was the death of innocent white/jew is boys that changed the civil rights movement. The only way you can and may convert these people is White America has to tell crazy uncle Don or nephew Tucker to shut up. They have to deal with hard questions, awkward silence, and tough answers. Until that happens, there will be no air support, no cavalry is coming. It is just me, you, the crazy few bunkered down with us and we are going to have to take this hill ourselves.
Isnot it weird that there's a discussion about this: Solely rephrasing it for black victims, but not for the millions others across the world from ancient times till today? https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2019/12/historians-clash-1619-project/604093/
. If you take a sensibility class they remind you to say person with disabilities instead of disabled person. You say person first because you don't want the person to lose their humanity. So I can see why I sing and suede person matters. And for as long as slavery has existed in the world, the transact magnet slave trade stands out as it was essentially a double genocide. It affected the Americas after the massacre of native Americans and then the stealing and of Africans from Africa to do work not to mention the money that got killed and the incredible levels of treatment
Plastered in a neighborhood in OKC Looks like the Klan is back up to it's old tricks in #OKC I blame the @officialOKGOP for encouraging and normalizing this hatred... pic.twitter.com/QgCMGWHp2m— The Devil's Architect (@mike_segroves) February 4, 2023
I'm not arguing against it, I wonder why it only should be applied to American black enslaved people and not as a common designation of all who suffered that fate. When one argues it's about persons being dehumanized I feel it's about individuals suffering that fate. Millions have undergone the same fate by the hands of the Romans from Africa to the Rhine in the Netherlands to the current East European countries of which Romania still carries in it's name the legacy. Taken to serve in Rome and it's territories the labour needs of their conquerars.
I am fine with Enslaved people. It is longer term than slave and slave is what we have used for centuries but enslaved people or person is the better term.
Observant kid. Watermelon's not in season. Students at a New York middle school were served chicken and waffles with a side of watermelon on the first day of Black History Month, prompting the school and food vendor Aramark to apologize. The school lunch in question was served to students at Nyack Middle School on February 1, a decision that upset some students and parents. As Insider's Angelica Cheyenne reported, foods like watermelon have often been rolled into stereotypes against Black Americans. "They were asking people if they want watermelon and I remember being confused because it's not in season," Honore Santiago, a student at Nyack Middle School, told WABC. She added: "Didn't think the company was capable of making us feel bad...especially the kids my color." https://www.insider.com/aramark-apo...ken-watermelon-black-history-month-2023-2?amp
Boeheim needs to be quiet about NIL deals, because right about now he's looking like he deserves to be in this thread. Been loong past time for athletes to earn a bit of the quillions they make for athletic programs. No, a damn scholly ain't enough. I like what you've built at Syracuse, and I like that you finally won a natty after losing to 1987 Keith Smart's jumper and an NBA rookie team in 1996 Kentucky. You can avoid even the appearance of conservatism by keeping your god damned mouth shut until the players look like you.
Two things. 1 - I never got the impression that this 1619 Hulu thing (documentary?) was aimed at those people. 2 - It is not the ones that speak out, but the ones that don't. And the ones that might be tipped the other way. As Auria says, it is a war, and we must use every tool possible.
Yes but that doesn't make it just. As historians, they would want to take a more balanced approach. It has become clear in this era and going forward enslaved people is the better term.
Wait. 'Nutter, that's not what Auria said. Auria said these folks aren't getting on board. There aren't any people left to tip one way or the other. If they're not already firmly in my camp, they can't be trusted. That's what Auria said. I mean, there literally isn't anything in my post that suggests we don't use every WORKING tool we have. But these people on the fence arw foing to stay there. No more Sinemas. No more Lie Bermans. No more Manchins.
The Mrs knows very little about how college sports works. But when I told her that ever since the National Corrupt Athletic Assoc. began, the yoots earned zippo off their NIL, she couldn't believe it. "Not even jersey sales?"
