Or I could re-read War and Peace. I'm pretty sure he's not coming back. (Edit: Altho Cindy says Berhalter is on the list of candidates, so......next coach?) I wonder how Mourinho stacks up.

If we're looking for a coach whose team didn't make the MLS playoffs and then s**t the bed against a pretty bad Al Ahly team one step away from getting to play against Real Madrid, "Smetzer" (probably not a good sign if the person advocating for a coach doesn't know how to spell his name) could be our guy... pic.twitter.com/VmCq5YSpv6— Matthew Doyle (@MattDoyle76) February 4, 2023
Smetzer is a good MLS Manager. He is not better than that. Today's big meh that was Seattle, against Al Ahly, is pretty much the USMNT you could expect against the serious international powers. If Meh is what we want, then we are rich in choices.
Smetzer is as good as any MLS manager, right? If you're saying that no MLS manager is good enough, ok, that's fine.

Honestly doesn't look too bad, he used to manage the Austria national team. Austria fans seem to like him even though he didn't qualify for the World Cup with a lot of hype around their "golden" generation, their next coach also didn't qualify either
The wages to performance is also a metric Berhalter did very well during his tenure in MLS. And Jesse Marsch even moreso.
Berhalter never won anything in MLS unlike all three of those other guys. By a lot of metrics Gregg wasn't a top 20 coach in MLS over the last decade. While by those same metrics Anthony Hudson was literally the worst coach in MLS over the last decade. Not hard to improve upon either of those benchmarks, even restricting ourselves to just Americans coaching in MLS... WHICH WE SHOULD NOT!!! If anything maybe the best current American coach Jesse Marsch being in a relegation battle and close to being fired is a sign that we shouldn't hire ANY American coach... after all the goal is to have the best possible USMNT not to provide a job to one American. 1622277557591883778 is not a valid tweet id
If you adjust for money spent by team Berhalter’s overall record in MLS was near the top during his tenure. Marsch was one of the few coaches who did better than him during that time frame. Whether or not he won anything during that time frame is less the point. It’s about who is doing more with less and it’s obviously much harder to win something when you are operating with fewer resources. Anthony Hudson of course is not under consideration to be the next coach, but is fine as far as interim coaches go. His record in MLS was very much terrible, but he was fine in the two international jobs he held (Bahrain and New Zealand). When he left New Zealand people thought he was the best coach they had ever had. And the question is who else could we even get as the interim coach who is better? Not many people want to come in and be the interim for a job they have no chance of getting. The best choice for the job may not be American, but an American option is much more likely to take the job compared to a foreign option. A foreign coach may also be a better coach tactically, but a poor fit as far as team culture/chemistry are concerned. It’s a tricky needle to thread.
What does "fewer resources" mean, were the Crew ever down near 19th in payroll under Gregg and still managed to be one of the top teams in the league? Jim Curtin has actually won a trophy (2020 Supporters Shield) unlike Gregg. And while he didn't win Supporters Shield or MLS Cup last season, he came just about as close as you can get without winning, tied with LAFC on points, and losing on PKs, respectively. Drawing a line between being so close that there's pretty much nothing separating you from the winning side, in those two instances, and say some of the USOC runners up also with Philly (of Curtin's three losses in the finals 2015 also went to PKs).
Gregg only reached MLS Cup once, in 2015... it looks like the Precourt trying to move the team to Austin thing first became news in late 2017 October 25, 2017: News broke in the past weeks that the team’s owner, Anthony Precourt, would not receive help (read: tax dollars) from Columbus to build a new stadium and was seriously considering moving the team to Austin, Texas after next season. On Wednesday, after public outcry, Precourt announced that he would refund season tickets for next season. It was a nice, if forced, move from Precourt but seemed to confirm beyond all doubt what was happening: Crew SC is leaving Columbus. https://www.sbnation.com/soccer/201...c-season-tickets-austin-move-anthony-precourt In any case the Columbus Crew actually won MLS Cup in 2020 with Caleb Porter as their coach (Porter also beat Gregg in 2015), and I don't think many would want him as the next USMNT coach... ==== But since he's currently without a job, perhaps Porter would be willing to be the interim US coach? A guy who won MLS Cup with two teams including beating Gregg, would certainly be preferable to Anthony Hudson, by some metrics the worst coach in MLS over the last decade... If USSF wants to take their time to hire the right Sporting Director and Manager, fine. The coach for 2024 and 2026 is the most important hire in #USMNT history. While he was fine for a January camp, the interim coach for March and summer should be better than Anthony Hudson…— Alex Calabrese (@amcalabrese12) February 6, 2023
I think the issue is that someone like Porter isn’t likely to take a short term interim job of undetermined length when he’s also not going to be a candidate for the full time gig. If you didn’t have the U20 World Cup Varas could do it, but it was always going to be someone from Berhalter’s staff. And once Luchi Gonzalez took the San Jose job (and Estavez taking the FC Dallas job before that), Hudson was always the primary candidate still on staff. Let’s just hope they get a sporting director hired by the March window or thereabouts and a new coach in time for the Nations League finals.
Just based off a rough analysis I did myself where Marsch comes out extremely well and Berhalter does fairly well also. I haven’t seen anyone write it up anywhere, but I ran it because I was curious, I’ve been asking Chat GPT to check my work and run it in different ways, but nothing noteworthy so far.
The news broke in 2017, but efforts to undermine the team were happening before. It just started to make sense when the Austin news broke. Berhalter was a pretty good MLS coach all considered. How he did with the NT is a different matter.
Berhalter was around the 20th best coach in MLS over the last decade... while that is "pretty good" not sure it's "should coach the national team good"...
Well not sure whether people want him or not but Jesse Marsch is now available and there’s no question he’d take the job Jesse Marsch has just been sacked by Leeds United.
