Upon further inspection, there's two things that I despise in an announcer. I don't understand how MLS announcers don't understand the basic mechanics of the league's broadcasting platform. At any given game, there are tens and tens of viewers on terrestrial broadcast and at least half of the audience is actively supporting the other team on the internet stream. So any announcer who acts like a cheerleader is thoughtlessly alienating half the audience. It's completely unprofessional. I'm also viscerally nauseated by any person who simps for their employer. It's gross. The other thing that I loathe is the unfairness of hiring British people. Look, I get that there's a vast Anglophilic segment in the US soccer population. It's humiliating. Too many teams try and pander to this population by throwing out a British-sounding announcer. Which is why you get people like Ross Smith and Lloyd Sam, catastrophically terrible announcers almost completely without merit or talent, in high visibility roles. The only way this ever changes is for the USA to go undefeated for ever against British teams in the World Cup ✔️ and for hiring directors to start engaging with non-Brits when they fill these roles. Hire people for what they do, not for who they are.
I'm just tired of the incessant verbal diarrhea from most football commentators. Very few provide any sort of insight that a long-time fan doesn't know or understand better than the announcers. Plus the missed calls or misunderstandings on calls. I find myself often screaming at the TV "He got the yellow for dissent" or " he got the yellow for kicking the ball away" or other nonsuch because the announcers aren't paying enough attention to what is happening (perhaps a TV vs booth vantage point). The worst is watching a Premier League match and listening to two ********ing Brits wank each other about random shit while the match is going on but isn't interesting enough for them to talk about it.
I honestly can't imagine watching many away games going into the season without Dave Johnson. That might change, but first sense of things leaves me very unengaged by the product so far. I read on twitter that the DCU coverage that's up there now is pretty poor too. Obviously, I've watched plenty of primetime coverage games with the regular network announcers, but on a regular basis, I don't know that I have much joy in watching our team without Dave Johnson.
I know everyone seems to have this complex about British commentators. Most of the American commentators suck. Stu Holden is terrible. 1. Every single tackle that isnt fair, he cries as if he has flashbacks of his own injuries. He's too soft. 2. He explains things like were all stupid or 10 years old. 3. He has no charisma. Max Bretos sucks. Charlie Davies and Mo Edu are meh. Dempsey is amazing, but he only does halftime and post game. Donovan sucks. Aly Wanger is amazing. Ill take her over all the other American pbp. DJ is DJ, not gonna speak on him. Jon Strong is not bad. Taylor Twellman is too emotional. I dont like Ian Darke, but i'd rather listen to him tha
if they get former American players who are white bread like Stu Holden and Landon Donovan, then I'd be all for it. Get Dempsey, Eddie Johnson, for example. I see Demarcus Beasley is part of the HBO coverage of our NT. I like to see what he has to offer.
The guys who do paramount? They are American born with Italian heritage. Theyre voices are sooo annoying.
The problem is easily fixable. Their problems mainly stem fro saying too much stupid stuff. If they talked less, didn't try to fill up air they would better commentators.
I'll accept the criticism of most American announcers, but at least they don't bellow "GOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAL!!!!" like their Latino counterparts. (Wouldn't it be great if a Latino announcer shouted "It's in the net!"?)
I have issues with poor commentary. Unfortunately, some MLS teams hired people based on their accent not their ability to commentate. Others hired Shep... Unfortunately, many of our best known male National Team players are very very very bad at commentary. I'm not sure what the solution is because high quality commentary is rare across many sports. Personally, I just wish broadcasters realized that they aren't doing radio...

My grandfather was an old salt. He used to watch games with the volume off and have an old transistor radio tuned into the game. The action was a bit out of sync, but the commentary was sooooo much better. I think it's mostly a lost art that comes from the lack of necessity for it. I couldn't tell you the last time I listened to any kind of game on XM.
I listened to match on Sunday and due to being at work, I couldn't watch the screen. However, the commentary was so much that it was like listening to a radio broadcast and I could follow what was going on. Fortunately the announcer didn't start talking about that one time in Hamburg or other things unrelated to the match...
I do this with NASCAR - or did until I had to switch to streaming for TV, now the TV is about a minute behind the radio instead of 7-10 seconds like broadcast/cable/satellite and that's just too much lag. I could deal with the 10 seconds, you could hear excitement in the announcer's voice and look up to make sure you could see the screen to see what they were excited about. Now I still have the radio on outside on the porch so if I hear something I can come back inside to see on TV. But there is no immediacy to it, I have to watch an extra lap* to see what happened. (* almost a lap at Daytona/Talladega, 3 laps at Bristol). Back when I attended DCU religiously (or the closest thing to religion I have had since I was 11) I only ever got to hear them on radio once, I was so sick at the tailgate people made me go home instead of into RFK, it was like 100 degrees outside so I listened to them - it was nice to listen in the car most of the way home (it was a weak signal from a DC station) and Tony Lamarzi was born to do radio broadcasting. When he covered for Dave, you could hear him trying really hard to hold back a bit on e talking because it was TV - he didn't always succeed in that, but I appreciate him trying
He's very small and not very aware defensively. Can move the ball adequately. Not really favored by his three previous managers in DC (Olsen, Losada and Rooney). The fact that he couldn't see the field in the Belgian Second Division speaks volumes. The guy will be roster depth for Open Cup matches and any other match the FO and Coach don't take seriously. In DC fandom parlance -- he's a deckchair.
What @griffin1108 said above is correct. He was getting time when he was fairly young and we liked his game a lot, although his size at DM always appeared like it was going to be a problem. He moved the ball well and was incisive with his passing, but I don't think he was getting enough game time at DCU to really grow his game and may well have benefited from a year or two playing mostly full time at our USL team.
It's not just us who are fed up with their team's management https://www.espn.com/soccer/la-gala...re-boycotting-the-club-is-calling-their-bluff
