I really think that a fundamental lack of self-respect is at the heart of a lot of right-wing politics.

It's only slightly more absurd if you imagine President Camacho saying those things.

Didn't we all want all that covid spending?

I get the tax cuts, that definitely increased the deficit, but so did all that covid stimulus and that was passed by Democrats in Congress.

By opening the link you’ll find that ProPublica covered that, here I’ll do it for you. :) There are 2 more links in that if you need to delve deeper.

“Economists agree that we needed massive deficit spending during the COVID-19 crisis to ward off an economic cataclysm, but federal finances under Trump had become dire even before the pandemic. That happened even though the economy was booming and unemployment was at historically low levels. By the Trump administration’s own description, the pre-pandemic national debt level was already a “crisis” and a “grave threat.”

    Oh dear.

Well, the stimulus actually helped us weather the pandemic. The 2017 Trump tax cuts LARGELY supported the 1%, who didn't need the help. Also, the debt was in bad shape from those cuts even before 2020.

Again, ceezmad being intentionally obtuse. Just want to offer some sense.

Even Camacho came around at the end. We're stuck in perpetual Idiocracy with these Republicons.

The debt has never been in "bad shape", basically because it's paid and renewed cyclically, never to be collected at once (unless the GQP manages to somehow bomb the whole fiscal apparatus). Furthermore, thanks to the low interest rates, the debt was actually in kind of "good shape", because we were able to borrow at a rate below inflation.

Also, our debt to GDP ratio was at around 100%, which roughly means that the debt is fully supported by the sheer size of our economy, but it ballooned thanks to COVID stimulus and the tax breaks, but it has not reached alarming levels, as the GQP pretends.

Finally, most of the debt is owed to American citizens and entities, including the same government, and they're not calling for it to be paid all at once, like the GQP likes to pretend.

To your point, the US could be in a more solid fiscal situation, if we stopped giving tax breaks to the ultrarich, because it doesn't work and we could be financing the things that we need out of revenue, instead of neglecting them and/or borrowing to build them.

Don't forget GINA lending us $ for wars and other such baloney. If I owe you thousands that's my problem. If I owe you billions that's your problem.

But that is the point, we ran more deficit on top of what we already had due to the tax cuts, we can say is a good thing we did, but covid spending was on Democrats in Congress and Trump.

Now that the covid spending is over the deficit has come down.

If the full Trump tax cuts were to be repealed we could cut the deficit even more, but Democrats are too scared to repeal the tax cuts.

BTW this is from the pro publica article, spot the big change.

I was surprised by how much Trump increased the debt before the pandemic - at the top of the cycle!

The spending during an unprecedented crisis was fine - and that is why you don't blow up the debt at the top of the cycle.
