Yikes. There should be a limit of some sort. That is a ridiculous number. Hard to root for a Team like that.

I really don't see anyone offering him more in wages at this point, even if they get him on a free. I also don't really see him running down the contract and "betting on himself" so to speak. My impression, and I could be wrong here, is that he and the family are a bit conservative in those matters, and that is not a judgment or anything, just saying I'm not sure he is one to roll the dice when it comes to contracts and whatnot.

Does anyone know how Chelsea’s Champions League registrations work? I’ve seen a lot of social media chatter about Chelsea having too many players, and not being able to register all their new players without de-registering some of their existing players. Some of their fans seem to believe that they needed to de-register two players, which would have been Jorginho and Ziyech, but with Ziyech staying, will now probably be Pulisic. If true, that would be a huge slap in the face to Pulisic to be deregistered so a new player could be registered, especially since Pulisic should be back from injury by the time of Chelsea’s next CL game.
Does anyone know how this works and if this is a legitimate concern for Pulisic?

Perhaps, but he has always backed himself for better or worse. One would think a player would play where he was told, but he pretty much rejected Tuchel's attempts to play him in a wingback position. When It appeared he was being punished with a lack of time for his refusal, contract talks broke down and here we are.

So while I agree they are fairly conservative, they have a vison for him as a player and they have never deviated from that. There isn't much risk to him at this point in running down the contract. I suppose he could suffer a career ending injury and have to settle for a portion of what his likely wages would have been, but that is an inherent risk of being a professional athlete.

We may look at a 20M transfer fee as small, but when viewed in terms of what it costs a club to get this player it certainly allows some leverage for a signing bonus or bit more in the pay packet when no transfer fees are involved.

Hopefully he can get back on the field soon and we can go back to discussing his play....if he gets to play.....

At least we aren't discussing our players on a rainy night in Stoke or at an imploding Sunderland, coached by the likes of an Allardyce or Pulis and their scintillating football.

Eh but he did play at wingback when called upon and while I don't think he probably loved it, he didn't refuse, which would have been a problem. I also still don't see any real evidence for this idea Tuchel was "punishing" him or whatever. Tuchel is a a bit strange with pretty rigid ideas, but generally I think Pulisic played when healthy and available, even if it was coming off the bench at times.

Tuchel's offensive system at Chelsea was totally wingback-centric. So being asked to play there seems more like trust than a punishment. Especially considering that CP is not known for his defensive prowess.

Boehly is not a mega rich billionaire, he can't keep doing that forever.

And their partners want to actually make money from this, it's not a plaything for them.

They committed to spending a fortune on the squad when they bid on the team. They’re just fulfilling their obligations with young assets they can flip.

However they quit negotiating a second contract at that time. Maybe related, maybe not, but he was very clear, that regardless of system. he had little interest in playing a wingback. I do think in that system his skillset was a good fit, but he wasn't really up for it.

Looks like Aubameyang was the one de-registered from the CL team, and not Pulisic. I feel bad for Aubameyang, but am glad Pulisic wasn't the one booted. Felix, Mudryk and Fernandez were the three added.

Man Chelsea have really been a graveyard (or at least annoying detour) of talent the last 10 years or so. So many good players just cycling through for stretches of mediocrity. Might only be because I've paid more attention to them than other big spending clubs, but it really seems like they are particularly egregious at paying huge amounts of money for players not to produce their full potential.

Seems they just add players without any thought to haw they will mesh together or whether they fit the way Chelsea plays. Add in that they change coaches often and change the way they play and only the best and most versatile players thrive.

This is certainly the sense I get. And it is particularly bad this year as they are currently in 10th and 10 points out of a CL spot. So they are likely going to have the largest expenditures by far and not be playing in the world's most elite club competition next season. Brutal.

Of all the money they’ve just spent on players, my question is which ones will actually justify what they cost. Quite the gamble considering how new they are to the man’s league

Their purchase agreement required a boatload of money be poured into the club on top of the actual purchase price. I believe the spending spree has been done in a way to both meet the requirements of the purchase and ultimately get a lot of the money back on subsequent transfers out of the club. All these guys are young and will be sold on at some point in the next few years. Even if they are sold on for half of what was paid, the ownership group is cutting the required investment in the club in half. So they are spending money to save money. I really don't think these private equity guys will continue to spend like this once they've met the "additional investment in the club" requirements of their purchase agreement.

Interesting that Chelsea deregistered Auba and kept Pulisic given that he's injured. And that they also kept Ziyech.

The narratives of Chelsea fans/influencers don't match what's actually happening with the team.
