maybe not because the standard of proof and what has to be proved are different under his employment contract

First up, employment law is just balance of probabilities not beyond reasonable doubt like in criminal law

Second, these contracts have lots of clauses to protect sponsors / broadcasters and the club. Basically sponsors and broadcasters don't want rapey content, so this is reflected in terms of contracts - its possible he can be sacked just on the basis of actions that don't meet his professional obligations

The israel folau case revealed that Australian rugby has a clause that players can be terminated for saying offensive stuff on social media - let alone rapey/violent conduct

These things take time anyways, plus the court system is also a little backed up.

    Gonna be a while …..

So suspended but still paid. If guilty does he have to return those wages.

From what I read, yes. If charged and sentenced to prison time, contract would be void and he would retroactively owe back wages. How far back, I'm not sure.

I just had a long phone call with my brother about how he can't come back. I told him in the English press the way a black man has messed up like this they will tear him to shreds. Not to mention that proven or not guilty in the court of public opinion.

United are going to have to sell them to one of the Turkish League Giants or maybe MLS or some place where they won't care as much about this record and he's going to have to work his way back into the championship or premier League like 4 to 5 years.

I do think if I was the national team coach for jamaica, I would be on the phone with him immediately.

I was wondering what the chances are.

But even if he's allowed to comeback, he should just focus on getting ready for next season. Couldn't possibly be fit enough.

I hope Mason gets the help he needs because to be capable of what he did at such an age... that's scary.

I'm torn on what is the best path forward.

On the one hand, I think for rehabilitation purposes (nobody is as bad as the worst thing they've done) he shouldn't lose his career. However the spotlight on him here will be bright and it may hinder his progress (not on the pitch, as a person). I feel like going overseas would be best.

OBVIOUSLY my heart goes out to the victim and her family.

Wow. It’s going to be really interesting how the club handles this. I expect a formal statement from them soon. Either saying he will return to the team or that his contract has been cancelled by mutual agreement or something along those lines.

If he does return, I imagine it’ll take a while for him to contribute again. And when he does, he’s gonna get abuse the likes of which we’ve never seen.

As @johno says torn is definitely the feeling on this.

My social side has a real problem with this and always will, however this pans out.

My footballing side is desperate to have him back and under EtH (who is the kind of manager he needs).

Key to all this is the victim and her family. We will wait and see how this unfolds.

If the club determines the thing to do is to end the contract (which would probably have to legally be mutual) then am fine with that.

If the club (having discussed with victim and her family) want to go down the “rehab” / reintegration route (for want of a better word) with Mason, then will learn to live with that too. However as stated, will never feel quite right - as this cant be erased.

well now this has certainly taken a left turn...
He is still only 21 and his contract runs until 2025. Not sure how the rest of his mates on the team e.g. Rashford feel about him now, whether they support him as a friend or are still disgusted by him. Maybe have him start training on his own with club supervision for the rest of this season and send him on loan outside of England next season.

Y'all are crazy. In America people get off for murdering folks and still have jobs and even make the hall of fame (we all know Ray Lewis was involved). Rip the bandaid off, integrate him back in, let him prove himself or fail.

    Let him play.

He needs to escape the spotlight and rehab in peace. This is why I said turkey. Because we know the English-speaking press is going to be absolutely brutal and not let go because he's guilty in the court of public opinion.

I think once he's successful on loan then United will sell him. Charges dropped and all doesn't change the fact of the footage that came out, the video and the audio.

Lads, he is done here. Let's just accept it.

In America, you can work for a company that makes billions in profit and be on gov't assistance. Your gov't assistance can get stolen and used in another state - a confirmed crime - and you won't get that assistance put back on your card.

Something happening in America is not a good reason for it to happen somewhere else.

You are advocating for the inclusion in our team of someone who has been charged with attempted rape and who likely battered a sexual partner and I'm the troglodyte? Being callous doesn't make you sophisticated or wordly.

    cleaned something up.
