It moved the primary from March 12 to Feb 27. In 2020, this would be in the spot that South Carolina held before Democrats shuffled the calendar to move SC first on FEb 3, NH and NV second on Feb 6, Georgia 4th on Feb 13, and Michigan 5th on Feb 27.

I'll bet it's also got a higher percentage of union members than the national average. I'm a big proponent of empowering unions via legislation as a method for reducing income inequality, so to me that's really important.

PS-it was Jimmy Carter who used Iowa to surprise everyone and win the nomination. My sense is that New Hampshire got pissed off at Iowa, because the winner of Iowa for both parties tends to get upset by other candidates in New Hampshire. That's what happened to McCain in 2000, it's what happened to Obama in 2000, I think it even happened in Bush/Reagan in 1980. The pettiness of the NH voters, automatically punishing the Iowa winner, is all the more reason to kill the irrational system we have now.

Michigan also has as mentioned, a more diverse population than say Iowa or New Hampshire. We've got the largest Arab-American population outside of the Middle East*, a big city that is majority black and is slowly getting better (Detroit of 2022 is much different than the Detroit of 2002), along with one of the biggest universities in the world. It makes a lot of sense. Throw in that Michigan has historically been a purple state, then yeah. It makes sense.

On a related note, right to work was passed here ten years ago. No thanks to Rick Snyder and the likes of the DeVos family supporting it. There's been talk that MI Dems definitely want to repeal it and quite frankly, I hope we do. Maybe the DeVos family will faint from shock.

*: In my travels around the US, I've yet to find Middle Eastern food as good as in Detroit. My favorite place is a little Yemeni spot near where Detroit City FC plays and a spot near me that shares it with a gas station but of course, it turns out to taste amazing. There's a place in the Chaldean Town neighborhood of Detroit that I've been meaning to try too. Also, highly suggest ordering baklava from Shatila (They ship nation and world wide!) if anyone wants some treats.

I thought it was McGovern who discovered the tactic. Perlstein's Invisible Bridge mentions that McGovern used Iowa (Which was seen as preliminary) as a way to get ahead. Basically McGovern's team realized, "Wait, we can use this to show we're favorable because no one cares about Iowa." Even Perlstein mentions that the pundits started caring about Iowa afterwards that year.

Better yet, this PBS link confirms my view. When I get a chance I'll refer to it but methinks McGovern discovered it. https://www.iowapbs.org/iowapathway...-history-george-mcgoverns-early-momentum-1972

Trump's jealous. He never had what it takes to become a teacher.

He had to buy a beauty pageant and proposition his own daughter to "cuddle up" to underage girls.

I feel very gross writing those comments.

That is not a bad campaign announcement video. A bit long and I skipped through some, but not bad.

Aside from their typical politician-sized egos, I feel like the seemingly deluded presidential aspirations of people like Pompeo, Pence, and Haley might represent an emotional coping mechanism in some ways.

They want to believe that they got something in return for selling their souls to Trump; the alternative is unpleasant to contemplate.

Interesting--I just read Invisible Bridge last Fall and I don't remember the McGovern campaign elevating Iowa, just Carter.

It's a long book, though, so not surprised I'm forgetting a major detail.
