Bruno may sometimes be wasteful with the ball, but passes like that are a joy.
Unselfish by Rashford to cut that back

I remember when Aurier was at PSG and people really rated him. He is an awful, awful player. Every single time I watch a game with him, I say out loud to myself…”What the hell was he thinking there?”.

Well that was something. I think it is a measure of how well Ten Hag has done that we can win a match 2-0, with 74% possession without ever getting out of 3rd gear and the performance be seen as dissapointing. I'm not saying it wasn't I'm saying ETH has lifted the standards in such a short time.

12 consecutive wins in all comps at home.

It was very easy to see how important Lisandro would be to our team from an early stage but I'm in awe of how quickly Shaw has settled into this role. I know he hasn't added the goals and assists this season but he's basically playing as a holding midfielder in this inverted role. He's like Zinchenko but he can defend. He stopped so many potential counters today with smart tackles and excellent positioning.

A big reason we weren't cut open on the break today despite having most of the ball and being camped in their half was down to Shaw/Lisandro/Varane making a solid back 3 with Casemiro & Fred either slowing the eventual counter attack or forcing a pass that could be intercepted.

AWB wasn't good, but he wasn't bad. I didn't notice him. It used to be in games with 74% possession he'd stick out like a sore thumb for not making good decisions, being in bad positions or halting multiple attacks.

I'm just blown away by ETH. Unbelievable results in such a short space of time. We are playing with control and repeatable patterns. I'm loving this.

I also am VERY intrigued by Sancho at 10. I look forward to more of that.

    some stats

    • Manchester United have reached the League Cup final for the 10th time, with only Liverpool (13) ever playing in more.

    • Manchester United have won their last 12 home games in all competitions, their longest streak since a run of 12 between May and December 2017. It's their longest winning run at Old Trafford within a single season since December-May in 2010-11 (17).

    • Nottingham Forest have lost their last nine meetings with Manchester United in all competitions, extending their longest ever losing run against a single opponent.

    • With two assists from the bench, Man Utd's Marcus Rashford has now been involved in 25 goals in all competitions this season (18 goals, 7 assists), the second highest tally for a Premier League player after Erling Haaland (34).

First game back but he kind of looked the same to be honest. He did look more fit, but on a couple of occasions he had the chance to run at a defender 1v1 and opted to pass instead which was disappointing.

Hopefully he just needs a few more games to get settled and find a rhythm.

Our attackers are all getting healthy at the right moment. We seem to have a bit of a surplus, which is tremendous given the amount of fixtures we have ahead of us. It's also clear the ETH has some creative ideas on how best to utilise these players, which speaks to the flexibility of our attacking approach.

I thought it was interesting ETH played him in the center and moved Bruno out to the right.

When he first came to the club I thought that ultimately be his best position. He looks to be more of a #10 or 2nd striker than any sort of winger in the Premier League. At worst he will be adequate cover for Bruno. At best he could be part of a new look front four that is more fluid and interchangeable.

This is criminal from AM. IF ETH and McCarthy can get his head screwed on right, he'd be a world beater. Sancho with a neat turn and progressive pass and Tony pulling into space plays the first time ball and then pulls off again. If he busts his ass to get ahead of the play, he might have a tap in. Even if the ball isn't played there, he'd have created room for Bruno to find Rashford or maybe some other cut back.

Beautiful bit of play, but just a little bit off.

No joke - add whatever caveats you like but what we were cooking with Sancho, Rash & Martial with Bruno wide right was genuinely exciting, a glimpse of something special. The tempo of our passing in that area doubled, and it was mostly one or two touch - and it led to a lot of really good chances, or opportunities to cut the ball back that weren’t quite taken.

I said before that moving Bruno wide lets us have more technically secure players in the middle, and players who are on a more similar wavelength who aren’t looking for the final ball so often. I think I said that after Antony actually played as a 10 with Bruno wide right at the end of the Reading (I think?) game recently.

There are some incredible pairings you can get between Sancho, Antony, Amad and (RW) Bruno, especially if you mix one left and one right footer. Combining that with Martial up top gives us a good concentration of players who collectively feel as rewarded by being part of an elite one touch move as others do by individualism. In the end our goals were messy but they felt inevitable due to how often we tore through them.

Watching that vid again I think Martial doesn’t make that far post run because he wouldn’t make it. And the cutback to Martial was definitely on, and should have been taken rather than a 10 degree shot. But yeah I think Weghorst or Donny make that back post run and are probably the only ones at the club who do right now.

Part of why I think working with a fit Martial really excites Ten Hag is precisely because he helps overload these 10 spaces and his link-up play is so good. He mentions how he likes to have “several 10s” in this interview from when he was at Ajax (start at 9:46)

I give a lot of the benefit of the doubt to Martial because he’s spent so long out injured that he loses out on so much time making these runs more consistently. Now if he can’t stay fit then it’s all for nothing. But the extent to which Ten Hag likes players to rotate positions is part of why I want someone much more complete and rounded as the 9. It’s easier to teach Martial (or eg Gonçalo Ramos) this run than teach how to regularly make the passes Anto did in his cameo.
