Tough break for the kid. Really impressive progress at FC Barcelona up to this point. My son's youth team trained and scrimmaged at the training grounds of Barcelona and Real Madrid this summer, and I was surprised that virtually all their fields are turf. They're beautiful surfaces, but wonder if they suffer disproportionate ligament injuries.
Messi made the comment, when asked about playing on turf in MLS, said it wasn’t a problem and that he grew up playing on turf fields. That told me La Masia was mostly turf.
"Based on the evidence from this systematic review, the incidence of injury is typically lower when football is played on artificial turf than it is when played on grass. This finding was seen in both men and women." From the Lancet Published April 13, 2023 Lets put this to rest now. https://www.thelancet.com/journals/eclinm/article/PIIS2589-5370(23)00133-5/fulltext
I know. I know. But as a guy that has coached - I don’t know how many years on turf - I have seen more severe injuries (knees and ankles) than I have on grass especially in young women. I don’t care what studies show, my eyes have told me differently. With Aaron Rodgers going down, the NFLPA is on a hunt to ban turf and guess who that was endorsed by? MLSPA.
I would consider your evidence as antidotal. The NFL is a 20 Billion dollar industry. Big names like Rogers drive the industry. Big names have multi-million dollar contract. These contracts pay whether injured or not. Protecting that asset would be important to the team/league. The cost of growing sod even indoors is nowhere near the cost of these contracts. I guess what I am saying is if it were true why wouldn't they grow the sod?
Turf isn't natural. It doesn't feel natural. Athletes know this. Different biomechanics. That obviously doesn't mean injuries don't happen on grass. It's sports.
Oh for sure….. injuries happen all all types of surfaces. In the last few years, I’ve just experienced more severe knee injuries on turf with my players. Off the top of my head, in the HS ages (U14-19 boys & girls) I oversee…. I’ve had 4 ACL’s, 1 MCL, and 2 meniscus tears since Aug ‘21. All but one of those (MCL) occurred on turf. In fact, I want to say all were girls minus 1 ACL and 1 meniscus. Lots of games in that span so I don’t know if those severe injuries are considered a large or unusual amount. I have no idea. I just know, as I said, nearly all occurred on turf.
No offense but yeah as a sample, your observations are pretty meaningless. What isn’t surprising is the injury rate for the girls, which is far significantly higher for knee injuries.
I would say that, in retrospect, this was some rather amusing understatement. He was not, it turns out, just some other guy!
