Not sure if it's accurate or not, but I've heard that we were going to loan him to Atletico, but that we already have eight players out on loan, and that is the maximum allowed by FIFA rules. So we couldn't. D'oh! It's being made to sound as though we simply didn't know the rules. It's hard to believe ... but crikey ... if true ... sheez, doesn't make the front office look too good there, eh?

They would have done it either now or in the summer. He has not been the same since his injury.

Had Spence stayed in the UK, Doherty could have been loaned out. But Spence went to Rennes because there is a better chance of regular playing time. Doherty was 3rd or 4th choice RWB, with little resale value, so not a bad move at all for Spurs or MD.

The big problem remains the players who are on loan not to be developed, but because we can't sell them - Ndombele, Winks, Reguilon, Lo Celso. Spurs need to take their lumps and get those guys off the books.

That's always been one of Levy's most glaring problems, to my mind. His preference for 'no deal' over 'not the best deal' has surely paid off at times*, but when you look at mule-ass-stubborn shit like David Bentley, the stadium sponsorship, and plenty else, you just see money flying out the window that simply isn't coming back. And of course, even more frustratingly, the necessary business downline that it prevents from getting done.

Sometimes it seems he'd rather concede the fight than 'take his lumps', which is just bizarre.

*only Niko Kranjcar comes to mind at the moment, but there were definitely others. Levy had a reputation for getting his price when everyone thought it had fallen through.

The top clubs don't operate like this, which is why Levy has to go.

Just look at the RB situation since we sold Walker, Trippier, Foyth and Walker-Peters:

    Serge Aurier: £23 million (released)
    Matt Doherty: £12 million (released)
Emerson Royal: £22 million (will most likely be sold in the summer)
Djed Spence: £12 million (loaned to Rennes)

So almost £70 million in transfer fees to 2 players who have been released, one who is on loan, and one who is a backup and will probably be sold in the summer.

Then we have Ndombele, Lo Celso, Reguilon and Gil also all out on loan, that is about £130 million in transfer fees playing for other clubs.

I mean, that is shockingly bad business from Levy. Imagine what kind of team we would have if that money had been handled by someone who knows what they're doing.

Looking at the squad, the next phase will be to acquire 2 CBs and a GK in the summer.

Signing quality CBs in the January window is not easy. It is going to take big money in the summer. Daniel Levy's traditional hand-me-downs are not going to do it.

    It's not good, for sure.

Out of curiosity, though, if Levy gets all the blame for the value-deficiencies of the current squad, how much credit did he deserve for its strength five years ago?

I don't say that to let him off the hook for right now, but only to remind us hat his tenure has hardly been a string of abject failure.

There have been at least four or five Prem clubs with markedly superior revenue streams to ours over the last 15 years, yet we're almost always among them. However frustrating his stewardship may feel, it's hardly as though he's had us punching below our weight. Like, almost ever.

    And it gets worse...

How about the summer of 2020? When we still had Jose Mourinho at the helm, look what Levy brought in:

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Carlos Vinicius (loan), Joe Hart, Gareth Bale (loan), Joe Rodon and Sergio Reguilon.

Only Hojbjerg is still at the club.

That is another shockingly bad window.

You want to talk 5 years ago? Ok. How about the summer of 2018? How many players did we sign? ZERO. And January 2019? ZERO.

Nobody cares where we were 5 seasons ago. Life goes on. Our chairman has been poor in the transfer market for over 20 years, and I still don't see any evidence that he has improved.

    Time to go.

Of all the players mentioned only Rodon and Aurier have gone to other clubs and not performed at a good level, and Aurier came from PSG who are a big team so you'd expect him to be better than his performances at Spurs showed. The others (Ndombele, Lo Celso etc) have all done pretty well because they're all quality players who just haven't fit into whatever the current Spurs coaches are trying to implement tactically.

On acquisition player quality Spurs are operating below the standard of the likes of Mbappé, Haaland etc. Levy does put his hand in the coffers to buy quality players, but they're not the same quality as the top 10 players in the world. He's guided by the Director of Football and the Coach.
I don't see how Levy can be blamed for any of this.

We need a GK and 2 CBs who are good enough to start, not just sit on the bench behind the guys we already have. It doesn't appear that any such players were available this window, so I'm OK with waiting until summer. Wingback was our most pressing need. Wingbacks are key to Conte's system, and we just haven't been getting much production from there. Last match against PNE, Doherty and Sess were quite poor. Porro should be an upgrade on the right, and we have Udogie lined up on the left for next year. We seem to be pretty well set up front with Kane, Son, Kulu, Richy and Danjuma. Central midfield is well stocked with 5 quality players. So we upgraded where we could, and presumably made some contact with targets for the next window. I'm satisfied.

Now they need to get ruthless with the outgoing players. Don't have players out on loan if you wouldn't want to take them back. Doherty is a swell guy, I'm sure, but does anyone seriously think we could challenge for the league title with him as our first choice RWB? I'm not shattered that he's gone permanently. Winks is surplus to requirements. He is an academy product, so no transfer fee was paid for him. Anything we get for him is profit. Thanks for your service and best of luck wherever you wind up. Ndombele and Lo Celso were flops in the EPL. Admit it, take what you can get, and move on. Reguilon is not a bad player, but not a good fit for our system. Take what you can get and move on. You would think that these players would be pushing their agents to help find them a permanent home. Sell those four players and you have half the transfer fee for a world class CB.

Is Forster not good enough to start?

Foster is a placeholder, like Gollini before him.

As far as Doherty is concerned, I am beginning to think Spurs were well aware of the loan limit, in the end, it gives them a convenient way to get him off the books. Some people have said we could get something for him in the transfer market, but I have my doubts, he looks well past his best before date.

Summer of 2019, January 2020 Levy brings in:
    Tanguy Ndombele
    Giovani Lo Celso
    Jack Clarke
    Ryan Sessegnon
    Gedson
    Bergwijn

Sessegnon is the only one still at the club.

    Shocking.

Why is it shocking? 4 of those players were probably the best at their respective clubs prior to joining Spurs. Clarke was one for the future and with Gedson I believe he was a loan when we didn't get the good Fernandes who went to Man U.

Breaking news! I will be at the stadium for our match v Chelsea on the 26th.

I don't hate them as much as Arsenal, of course ... but I swear, I hate them more than Arsenal. If I have as much then as I've had tonight, I'll give one or two of theirs a good kicking.

I think the last time we beat them, we were still playing at Wembley.

We are linked with dozens of players. I think we are pretty full in central midfield. We need centre-backs and a goalkeeper.

Ok thanks Golara. Fraser will now get his chance in the absence of Hugo. I'm feeling confident.

I am not entirely confident. Our season is riding on a keeper who went from being the #1 at Saints to being given away on a free. Hope I'm wrong.
