Gemma Grainger has stuck with experience in naming her squad for Wales’ upcoming Pinatar Cup campaign, the first competitive matches the team will face since their agonising World Cup qualifying play-off final loss to Switzerland in October.

The 27-woman squad is headlined by tried-and-tested trio Jessica Fishlock, Sophie Ingle and Angharad James. Wales’ record-goalscorer Helen Ward and Kayleigh Green both retain their spots, while Leicester City’s Hannah Cain, Liverpool’s Ceri Holland and Tottenham Hotspur’s Esther Morgan return after recovering from respective injuries.

Grainger has recruited just one new face in Bethan Davies, with the 25-year-old Sheffield United goalkeeper set to meet up with the squad midway through the campaign as Manchester United goalkeeper Safia Middleton-Patel will depart to feature in Wales under-19s’ mini-tournament in Portugal.

I was expecting the 3 European teams to field a lot of new players at the Pinatar Cup as they rebuild after not making the FIFA Women's World Cup (their next competitive tournament is Euro 2025) but that doesn't seem to be the case. It seems everyone wants to do well in this tournament by fielding their most experienced lineup as possible.

That is good for the one team that has qualified for the WWC (Philippines) as it helps them prepare for their debut at the Women's World Cup by playing against all this good teams. As Coach Staj said in an interview this European teams are probably the best 3 teams that did not make it to the World Cup.

GEMMA GRAINGER EXCITED FOR PINATAR CUP CHALLENGE

Cymru manager Gemma Grainger and her squad will return to the familiar surroundings of San Pedro del Pinatar this week as the Spanish town plays host to the 2023 Pinatar Cup with the opening match against the Philippines taking place on Wednesday, 15 February.

“The Pinatar Cup is a competition that we are familiar with and we had a great experience at the competition last year,” explained Grainger. “I'm excited about the squad that we've selected as we have a lot of our players available for selection which is always a great thing for us. Three games in six days is a challenge, and in every position we want to make sure we utilise as many players as possible. We have a plan about how we want to do that. We're in a transitional period, but right now we're focused on this February camp.”

Cymru finished fourth out of the eight nations that competed at the tournament last year, but this time only four countries will take part in the competition. For Cymru, the tournament will play a key part in preparing for the inaugural UEFA Women's Nations League which starts in September before UEFA Women's EURO 2025 qualifying begins in the early part of 2024. Grainger has named a strong 27-player squad to compete at the Pinatar Cup, including defender Gemma Evans, who is on course to make her 50th appearance for her country in Spain.

“It's been fantastic to work with Gemma,” said Grainger. “She's a top player and one of the top defenders in the WSL. In the last campaign I think we saw her at her best, especially in the games against France. From a leadership perspective, I've seen her grow over time. We've got many more years with Gemma and I only see her future getting brighter and her becoming a better player.” Meanwhile, Hannah Cain and Esther Morgan return after long-term injuries, while Sheffield United goalkeeper Bethan Davies is named in the senior squad for the first time. Centurions Jess Fishlock, Angharad James, Helen Ward and captain Sophie Ingle are all included in the squad.

“One of our biggest strengths is our diversity in terms of experience,” explained Grainger. “One of the things we're looking forward to his playing world opposition, and the Philippines will have a different philosophy and style of play to the European teams. It will be a great test for us. We want to make sure that we can build momentum as a team, and we will plan for the three games and make sure that the team continue to build on that momentum. We're not going to be able to put the same starting line-up out in every game, and we will utilise the time during matches and training for us to get out of the competition what we need to.”

Following the opening match against Philippines, Cymru will then take on Iceland on Saturday, 18th February before facing Scotland on Tuesday, 21st February. The Philippines are the lowest ranked nation at the Pinatar Cup in 53rd place while Cymru are currently 32nd having reached the play-offs for the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup last year. Scotland are 25th in the rankings table while Iceland head into the tournament as favourites having qualified for the EURO finals last summer and are currently ranked 16th in the world. Cymru were last in action back in November when they returned to Pinatar to take on Finland in an international friendly, with Carrie Jones scoring in the 1-1 draw.

    FT Iceland 2-0 Scotland

Acc. to BBC, Scotland had 60% of the possession, had more shots(21-9) and corners(6-2) but Iceland scored against the run of play twice within a minute early in the 2nd half(50' and 51') to win the game 2-0.

Wales scores a goal at very last minute of the first half on a PK and hold on to that lead to the end of the game.

A decent result for the Philippines against a much higher ranked Scotland team. The disparity in skill and experience shows but their discipline and will to fight kept them close for most of the game.

The Pinatar Cup does show that they still have a lot of work to do if they want to compete better against the higher ranked European sides and advance out of their group at the Women's World Cup.

Scotland edged past Philippines to secure their first Pinatar Cup win after a much-improved second half performance.

Pedro Martinez Losa's side led at the break through Lauren Davidson's deflected effort, but were blunt in attack, having just two shots in the first 45 minutes in Spain.

The introduction of Real Madrid's Caroline Weir at half-time brought some much needed class, and she teed up fellow substitute Rachel Corsie from a corner to double Scotland's lead.

Ma Serrano pulled one back for Philippines late on with a free-kick, but Scotland saw out the remainder of the game to keep their hopes of glory alive.

Player of the Match - Caroline Weir
She may have only played a half, but it was her calming influence that brought Scotland out of their shell and opened up the stubborn opposition defence.

    https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/64628213

The match stats showed that Scotland had most of the possession but in terms of shots(9-5) and shots on target(4-3) the disparity wasn't that big. The Philippines had missed opportunities of their own that went begging as they pressed high on offence instead of just bunkering like you would expect a much lower ranked team(#53 vs #25) would do.

    FT Wales 0-0 Iceland

    https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/64678873

Wales were frustrated by Pinatar Cup favourites Iceland as they were held to a goalless draw in Spain.

Despite being 16 places higher than Wales in the world rankings, Iceland struggled to carve out any real chances against Gemma Grainger's side.

Wales had the better of proceedings throughout, but could not break the deadlock despite chances for Rachel Rowe, Ceri Holland and Jess Fishlock.

The draw means Iceland lead the Pinatar Cup, ahead of Wales on goal difference.

Both sides are on four points after victories in the first round of matches, Scotland's 2-1 win over Philippines earlier on Saturday sees them sit third on three points.

This was a different test altogether for Grainger's team, after enjoying close to 80% possession against the Philippines on Wednesday.

Iceland, who featured at the 2022 Women's Euros, were comfortable maintaining possession of the ball inside their own half.

    Iceland 5-0 Philippines

Complete domination by Iceland. The Philippines were taught a lesson on so many levels including proper use of their height advantage, physicality, ball possession and management, speed, passing and accuracy.

I thought the first 2 goals were kind of weak and preventable as our goaltender who doesn't play games outside of training camp looked rusty and out of sorts but the final 3 were well deserved after some patient buildup and heads up play.

The PWNT were missing 2 of their better players on offence, Sara Eggesvik and Katrina Guillou but it might not have made a difference anyways the way Iceland's defence were managing our attacks.

Congrats to Iceland for winning the 2023 Pinatar Cup.
