It's a new dawn, it's a new day, it's a new game, for Pepi, and he feels good!

That battle of the bottom: The embarrassments of the North meet in a class of the hapless...

Groningen have not snatched a single point in forever, but a 2 goal win here against "might as well quit now" cambuur would vault them over Emmen for the moment.

Cambuur starting the 35 year-old backup keeper Ruiter for some reason. I don't think it's injury, as the #1 is on the bench. Time to score, Pepi. But Groningen with 0 SOG in the first half.

Groningen does it again, with another late-game goal (77 min) and even with more than 10 mins of injury time, doesn't look like Pepi will save the day... Man Groningen seems like they just want out of the Eredivisie. They give up 75+ min goals like every other game it seems.

Reading that Groningen fans invaded the pitch to protest their descent into last place? Seems like everything is going well.

WTH?! +21 injury time - and Groningen still can't score. No idea what happened to extend it that long.

If they go down I think it will be the first time this century! (Last promoted in 2000 if the club history I just read is correct.)

It's amazing how unlucky our guys are. Groningen until recently was a regular in European competition, and now they're dead last and staring relegation in the face.

  11. They (unwillingly) in the summer sold a very good attacker, who simply made the team function and their central defender and as of last weekend their other central defender.

It's crazy that they failed to replace JSL.

  13. Nope, it's not simply JSL. It's the rapport of players used to each other and when you remove two key players, the one in the back, who's also key in the build up and the man up front, you break up a functioning spine of the team. Pepi comes in without proper preparations with his fellow players. He on his own merits managed to score goals, and people in here began already the usual bs about easy scoring in the Eredivisie. I then already warned it takes a few weeks for staffs and defenders of the other teams to figure out how you play and how to defend against you. I gave the example of Bergwijn at Ajax, who in his first matches scored at will, but that's also because he was an unknown player for the defenders here. However after about 6/7 matches they studied him and since then he hasnot scored but 1 goal iirc.
Scoring in the Eredivisie isnot easy. If it was, we should have about 10 guys in the topscorer list with 25+ goals on their slate.
Bergwijn and now Pepi found out you can surprise the defenses for a while, but not for a long stretch...unless you're real top class.

I thought it was the Americans that got teams relegated. At least that's what I learned from you. Or maybe "unlucky" was meant to be sarcastic?

  15. They do, but we willnot give you the credits;)

That's a point I always make about players and managers, the honeymoon period when they are unknown and they look good because of it. It's a point I made with Marsch.

Indeed, the changes were too much for Groningen, but they needed a Eredivisie-tested attacker who could take JSL's place. Pepi is young and just a striker, not a brain for the attack, so he was never going to be it.

In the Eredivisie it's easier to score than in the Big 5, significantly so, so it's not like people are saying it's easy to score there in the absolute or compared to how it is in Turkey or in Scotland. Many players who scored double digits in the Netherlands failed to make an impact in the Big 5.

Just recently, Malen, who finished with 19 goals in the 20/21 Eredivisie season, has been a flop with Dortmund.

Regarding Pepi, as the saying goes, it’s hard to score when your team doesn’t score.

Groningen has one clear issues: Late game goals after leading or being even in games.
I mean here's their record this year:
    Cambuur - L1-0 (tied till 77)
    'veen - L3-1 (tied till 81, 82)
    Excelsior - L1-0 (tied till 69)
Sittard - L (Pepi put them up 1-0 till 78', gave up a goal at 78 and 84, got one back at 90+4 - and gave up another at 90+5!)
Utrecht - L (Up 1-0 till 62, then gave up game loser at 84.)
RKC - L (tied 1-1 till 62. Got one back at 76, lost game at 80)
That's a level of hapless that you simply can't shake off. It was true under Wormuth and still true after. Yikes.

  20. Yeah, but that's cherry picking to suit ones case. In the same Buli players less valued then Malen were successful hitters, Dost and Weghorst to name just two. Oh, and Weghorst just received high 8 ratings for his match with Manchester United.
What is lacking is comparing the success rate of other strikers from those top leagues moving to for instance the epl. How do they compare with the success rate at home?

Sure, your rando Marty Odegaards can score 8 goals in an lucky Ered season, but how are they going to do in the bigs?

Groningen giving up a point with a 78th minute goal? Shocking.

nice finish from Pepsi, tho. It’s too bad the tractor boy defense is such a shambles Pepsi is having a decent year. Hopefully he can save them a point here.

And they lose. Groningen’s new coach bounce is bouncing them out of the eredivisie.
