People are really stretching on Tolkin. Hit one superb pass. Other than that .... lightweight. Outshined by Jones. Who wasn't anything special.

Also, Hoppe should not have squared the ball. He should have finished it. But it would have needed to be pinpoint.

Disagree on Hoppe. Is he fantastic? no, but he showed some pretty good passing and letting off for others. definitely not tunnel vision outside of one play for sure.

    No one was any good.

I was expecting something from Tolkin. Nope.

Jones was ok but needs a lot of improvement.

What the hell happened to Williamson? I really thought he could contribute. Nope.

Acosta and Arriola showed why they are who they are. Solid, but missing important parts.

Sonora was poor. Hoppe was a little better but really not much.

Jesus showed why he’s likely to always be about 4th choice. Not a disaster, but not a 9.

Aaronson is getting more stick than he deserves but not a breakout.

I’m not sure how Sabbi made the U20s.

Hoppe was crap in the important moments.

It’s out of season so we will see, but I am not anxious to rely on any of these guys in a real game.

Hudson: 180+ minutes, 1 goal, no wins. Not a great resume.

    So Cal
We were late to the game...got to our seats approx 40th min. From my vantage point, (Tolkin right in front of us in 2nd half), I thought he was one of the few players that actually impressed.

Jones was decent. But he is, what, sixth on the left back depth chart? Seventh, if you count Isais?

Jalen Neal was a pleasant surprise. Is he the number four teenage CB? (Che, Henry, Wynder)?

That's kind of how I see most of the players in this camp.

    More or less...

I think we got out of this camp what I thought we'd gotten after Wednesday night's match. Zendejas is probably a capable first team backup. Vazquez should probably be in the roughly equal 3-5 man battle royal for the CF position. Cowell is one for this cycle. Jalen Neal is probably one for... later in the cycle, or the next. Ditto Slonina. And that's probably it, though I won't throw away the key on anybody, really. Maybe a guy like Soñora or Jones becomes borderline relevant. But I'm not counting on it.

This is not true. Arriola and Ferreira were both good. Arriola closed the MLS season strong and looks ready to go again. Arriola was always wide open making runs on goal. I thought Tolkin and Aaronson were decent too, but not quite at the level of Arriola and Ferreira.

I sorta get playing some of the Long, Zim, Arriola, Acosta types because you need bodies out there. But I'd rather have seen more Neal and Rogers. Rogers is a big boy.

I'll give Aaronson a pass for now. He constantly looked like he was about to do something useful and then just got flicked off the ball like the wet noodle he is. He's a boy.

I hope really really hope that Musah, Adams and Mckennie stay healthy. There is no imminent midfield depth. At least from this camp.

Hoppe might turn into that polarizing sort if he isn't already. A few good touches followed by a brain fart. Mostly stemming from trying to do too much.

We're just never going to get a sense of who can emerge as a striker for this team in this formation. There just aren't enough touches for them. Not sure if it's that no one is good enough to run the game through them more or if they purposefully don't because they're overly married to the the style and not even considering trying to optimize certain players skillsets.

Looking forward to seeing if the next guy gives them a bit more freedom.

And Sabbi didn't look like he belonged out there. Pretty much a hot mess.

Nice to hear but I would add... in the Revs pecking order, he is not 1/2 as good as Kessler and by the way, Kessler is far better than Long and always has been.

What I saw was two games, one goal and a lot of missed chances. Im willing to give the new temp coach a chance as I suspect this roster was picked by GB. I see no reason to include so many main squad players in this camp. Why? I also thing Ferreria is a waste of time. Did nothing, too small ... just gets pushed around. He did make some good passes but he is supposed to score
They said last night that new coach wont be picked till Ernie is replaced. Hope that is VERY soon. I also think more than ever that Ernie is running cause he doesnt want to fire GB... his buddy.

And that tells you the supporting personnel, setup, & opponent were part of the equation, huh. So you'd be remiss to not factor that in when evaluating individuals. Context matters.

Antonee Robinson was putrid at home v. Jamaica in a friendly. Miles looked pretty overwhelmed at home v. Mexico in that debacle.

How many of our players looked bad in those send-off friendlies? We had no shortage of these under Berhalter. If you manage to be mediocre to okay in that dynamic, you were good. It doesn't matter if the opponent on paper wasn't anything special or on the surface neither were you.

There’s a reason Kessler wasn’t in camp: he had a terrible 2022 season. I hope he bounces back.

Fey. Hard to take too much stock out of last night's match. It was a choppy, chaotic, foul plagued back and forth affair with a bunch on young new players on both sides thrown together for a match. It was what you would expect. I think Jones and Tolkin showed fine. Would have liked to seen more of the two center backs that came on late. Though Aaronson was overmatched physically, I like how he competed, kept at it, and didn't back down. Germany will do him some real good. Arriola deserved a chance to get rewarded with a pass for his many back post runs (Looking at you Hoppe). Hoppe showed he remains a lightening rod for US fans i.e. he flashes some skill along with some very questionable reading of the game. At this point he needs to find somewhere, literally anywhere, so he can play regularly.

i sincerely hope this is the last we see of johnson and long, and pending other cbs fitness/availability zim too.

this has nothing to do with this camp, but give them a nice watch or something.

I dont agree with that at all. The team sucked, not Henry. Worst thing is, Arena has done little to change things. Still stuck with Jozy's salary, gonna end up eating that. Now he signs another has been Bobby Wood. OMG, move over Omar, you have company.
You cant fault Kessler for the Revs selling off starting players and replacing them with over-the-hill players or "projects"

My largest take-a-way from this game is that Sabbi shows once again, why we just shouldn't be calling in players from Scandinavian leagues unless they're teenagers. He's an MLS back-up level player. No shame in that but some of you really need to eat some crow for the grief you gave GGG for not calling Sabbi in.

I also don't get the Hoppe hate. Yeah he should've made that pass to Arriola and he frustratingly makes the wrong decision sometimes, but to me, he was the only one really asking questions of the defense with dangerous runs (ala that layoff to Aaronson's first shot that should've been a goal). His performance felt a lot like Cade's the other day especially when you consider he was playing against higher level defenders.

I seriously don’t understand the Hoppe hate last night.

I won’t say that he was excellent. But I surely thought he was more good than bad. He pressed well. He held the ball well. He moved into space well. So he should have squared the ball to Arriola? I have seen every forward in the world make that exact play.

I’m not anointing him the Messiah or anything, and I don’t believe we should even call him back in until he sorts out his club situation. But this is a perfect example of this BigSoccer bandwagon “I told you so” hatred for a player. There’s always one whipping boy. And Hoppe seems to be a favorite of many because he wasn’t on their list of promising youth player standouts.

Personally, I don’t know what’s going on with him. He could still go the Sebastian Soto route into oblivion. But he could also still go the route of becoming our number one striker in a few years. I still see that he has the tools to get there. Now he just needs to become that final product....which will demand that he sorts out his club situation ASAP.

But I don’t get the hate for him.

This is the essence of it. And a year is just about enough time to forget about the suffering part.

Agree with Martino that Jones looked like he was most ready for the international level.

But I wouldn't write any of the younger guys. This is one data point is where they are today, an experience they can draw from, and most of them are still adding to their game.

Could you instead accept that other people reviewed his play differently than you rather than all this other BS you wrote?
