Yes, he played a large part for Leeds under Bielsa. He fit Bielsa's way of playing, which is more possession-oriented. Much of what Phillips did under El Loco was to spread the ball wide with long diagonal passes, which he was quite good at. This is pretty much the opposite of what Marsch wants, which is to play narrow and direct as quickly as possible. It was pretty clear when Phillips returned to the lineup that he was not a good fit for Jesse's style. Selling him to City was not as big a loss as people think. In his place, Marsch now has Adams and Roca.

And Marsch/Leeds still had ~$20M left from the Phillips transfer fee after signing those two.

I know Berhalter doesn't. Jesse might. Aaronson has an other-worldly work rate and is a solid player. He's very intelligent and creative. However, he gives the ball away too much and has awful passing at times. He's not that great of a dribbler, and really not the best shooter. His work rate is why he gets goals like he did against Chelsea/Mendy. He's good defensively in terms of being a pest. He's not an elite player and maybe never will be. 1 goal and 2 assists in 19 matches are not good numbers. I hope he will improve.

Worth noting that Leeds' effort to sign Aaronson started under Bielsa.

His metrics in terms of work rate, distance covered, etc. are off the charts.
Just the kind of thing that coaches who play the style of Bielsa want to see.

    He's only 22.

I don't think anybody on these boards over-rates Aaronson one way or the other. He doesn't start for the USMNT if we're fully fit. Under Berhalter, his primary role was as Pulisic's backup on the left wing. And if the USMNT's backup on the left wing is a Premier League starter, we should be pretty darn happy about that. [Berhalter also tried him in other places, but that didn't work out as well. We'll see what the next coach does.]

I think we can all agree that he will need to ramp up his goal involvements or his place in the starting lineup for Leeds may slip away. Cuz you gotta find a place for Gnonto in the starting XI at this point. The last couple of games I've thought Jack Harrison looked more dangerous than Aaronson as well.

I watched a midfield with Adams and McKennie in it stand toe-to-toe with England's midfield at the World Cup. I have no doubt McKennie can play at this level. And he wasn't fully match-fit at the World Cup either.

[If I was Leeds I'd try to get Musah instead of McKennie, but it sounds like Valencia isn't selling in this window. :) And Musah's pricetag is going to end up higher than McKennie's.]

Aaronson has done nothing with counting stats since very early in the season. If McKennie were to replace him in the starting lineup, I'm sure the counting stats would improve from that spot. What would they give up there, though? Harder to say. Not much imo. Aaronson's scrambly defensive style flatters to deceive, imo, not a really effective player there.
I don't think Aaronson's long term spot is in the middle. He's slight and prone to giveaways. I like him wide where the game is much more in front of him instead of all around him. With the sideline at his back, it's all very much simplified and that suits him, imo.
I hope Leeds gets McKennie and he's a shot in the arm from that attacking midfield spot, and Aaronson can get time on the right. I don't rate Harrison, anyway, he's fine but talk about overrated.

Pretty much agree. I struggle to see Aaronson being effective at playing in the middle in the PL. He is too slight and gives the ball away too easily. Frankly, I don't think he really has the vision to be an effective playmaker from the middle either. Having the ball on the wing gives him that extra time to look up and make a pass or whip in a cross.

I think this is a fair assessment of him at this point.

Personally, I like his little brother’s skill set better than Brenden’s. Paxten doesn’t have the same motor but is more technical and better in tight spaces. He sees the field fairly well also. He’s not there yet, and there are no guarantees he ever gets there, but he has some of the skills that eventually might help keep him from being overpowered at the higher levels IMO.

When Brendan has time on the ball, he can pick pretty passes and be super effective with them, that's his strength on the ball, imo. In the middle, in the EPL, there's not enough time for him. I like Paxten a whole lot more on the dribble and, as you say, in tight spaces. But he can't even get on the field with Philly, so he's not even in that conversation with his brother yet.
To me, Paxten looks like an AM with his play more than Brendan, but I'm willing to watch it play out of course.

Clearly Paxten has a looong way to go to even get to his brothers level, let alone surpass it. But when I look at his skill set, I think there is a chance he has a higher ceiling. Certainly not a given though.

3 G+A in 19 matches for Aaronson. Multiply by 5 and it is 15.

McKennie has 13 goals and 5 assists in 96 games for Juventus. What do you think he'll do in Prem for Leeds? 5 assists in 96 games for a supposed cmid/mezzala in Serie A with a team that rarely loses. Yikes.

Aaronson is an attacking midfielder. McKennie is a box-to-box midfielder who sometimes gets involved in the attack. They have different roles, and are not comparable. Aaronson would be expected to score more goals and have more assists in his role.

I like Aaronson. I try to give an honest assessment of players, fan or not. He has not reached his potential yet. He certainly has the desire to do so. I'm not sure of his ceiling.

Aaronson needs to play simpler for a month and try using top gear as a change of pace— not as the only way he can play.

In order to play direct and quick after turnovers you have to create turnovers. Aaronson speeds up the opponent in midfield. Won’t show up in stats but it’s easy to see.

why not multiply aaronsons stats by 9? what are you even doing?

    this season:
    aaronson 1 g 2 a in 22 matches all comp
    mckennie 3 g 2 a in 21 matches all comp

and before anyone gets all haughty about the epl, the two goals seperating them came in the champions league. but brendan plays strictly attacking positions, while wes is "further" from the action. and hey, just for fun- "always injured", "never plays" reyna has 4 g 2 a in 18 matches/far fewer minutes than either

No doubt he’s world class pressing but he needs to do more than just that to really matter, just my opinion of course.

I’d give Rodrigo a look there. He’s the only one I’ve seen on the team that has the motor. Probably have to sub for him sooner but he’d likely be more goal dangerous.

I'm surprised with all these Americans that Leeds hasn't signed Todd Margaret.

That might be a poor decision though

Table was not kind to Leeds today. Furthermore it looks like the coach sackings at wolves and Everton were exactly what both clubs needed. Wolves convincingly beat Liverpool 3-0 and Everton beat table toppers arsenal dyches first game in charge. Leeds absolutely must drag Nottingham forest back into it tomorrow because with that Everton win they’re even in points only above in goal diff
