It's hard to discount Earnie's desire to be near family, and it is factual, apparently, that he has been looking a bit. So the Reyna thing might have been the final straw but it certainly isn't the driver.

But I do wonder if the USSF job had lost a lot of its luster through stupid crap. For both Earnie and McBride to bail, that's just two people, and one didn't have a real job, but still...

I guess I’m surprised that McBride didn’t seem interested in pursuing the sporting director job.

It does seem like one of the issues of the GM job was that he didn’t have had enough to do. Not an issue if he takes Stewart’s job after he leaves and you have some continuity as well.

My money would be on Orlando. I don't love it, but there's tons of flights to Europe, it's convenient to Central America and the Caribbean, there's tons of hotels, the weather is as good as it gets outside of the Southwest, and you've already got the Orlando City stadium (26k) and DIsney's Wide World of Sports complex (where they held MLS is Back) so there's training overflow.

Atlanta has a slight better airport, some pluses and minuses on weather, hellish traffic and no good smaller stadium, but they do have MBS (45-72k) if we need it. But both are pretty close to each other as well.

Florida also has 0% income tax and I suspect suburban Orlando is a bit cheaper than Atlanta in terms of cost of living for employees.

My big unknown is how the land/construction costs there are compared to say, Kansas City, which has always been mentioned, or Texas. In the end, it may simply come down to a $75M complex or a $120M complex and that's not really even a choice at that point.

Free rent is incredibly helpful, but depending on the cost, I'm not sure it pays out. I think the big thing is finding a local stadium you can rent or get for cheap -- which I think means sweetheart deal with an MLS team owner. A lack of an in town NFL team probably hurts Orlando a bit because the Citrus Bowl has seen better days for big games.

Maybe he didn't like working at USSF.

Or maybe he realized he's not qualified.

He probably did, he mentioned that he was looking in to another opportunity in the federation that arose after the Doha tournament.

Yeah though it was reported the other position he was looking into was never ultimately created as a position.

Land costs should not be an issue anywhere, I think. Many suburbs will give you sweet heart deals for a soccer complex. Having the national training center nearby will increase desirability of the surrounding land.

But according to the Philadelphia Inquirer it was never ultimately created

    https://www.inquirer.com/soccer/usmnt-earnie-stewart-brian-mcbride-reyna-scandal-20230126.html

McBride added that he had planned to say something in December, “but another opportunity inside the Federation arose while there.” He didn’t say what it was, only that he looked into it and “felt it was one that would fit seamlessly with my position in leadership. Unfortunately, the position has been put on hold for the foreseeable future.”

What was that job? A source with knowledge of the matter said it was a new position under consideration to be created, but was not ultimately created. No further details are available yet.

So I don't think it was the sporting director job.

It's obviously not ideal, but I don't think it will be that bad to have Hudson as interim through the summer. Based on the Serbia game, the play will play basically the same style as under Berhalter. And Hudson seems willing to take a chance on some lesser known guys on the roster/in the starting 11, which is appropriate for the start of a new cycle. If we won NL and GC last go round playing Berhalter-ball, I don't see why we can't do the same under Hudson while bringing some new faces into the pool.

I wonder how much players w/power will be concerned about giving such a thing to a state run by DeSantis, Kemp or Abbott. I don't know if that's relevant but it could be, especially for women's team players who are very political in messaging, and even the guys are a little bit. I don't know if that matters or not, but these guys are all, for liberals, toxic, vile cretins. Not sure they'd care so much, but they might and Desantis already has shown a passion for picking fights with social justice types, in his own socially inept mini-Trump way.

It's a big deal for him too, more than likely he gets a Gold Cup and a Nations League Semifinal and possibly final, a huge deal for his career which went totally sideways the past two years.

Fair point. And in the search for politically beneficial objects of contempt soccer could become a symbolic target.

I am holding out hope for a manager who will give 4-2-3-1 or other formation/tactic that uses a traditional 10. I think our pool calls for it.

Without getting too much into politics, the issues for the women's team around abortion rights and health care are particularly important and I could actually see playing a role. Those players aren't going to live there, of course, but it is relevant to the female employees of USSF in particular.

There's already been some conversation about the NWSL draft and the implications on women's rights. That's far more relevant, again, because the player has to live there, but I'd think it factors in.

It seems like Earnie only wanted to do one cycle, and McBride only wanted to serve out his contract. Likely neither leaving had anything to do with Berhalter-Reyna drama.

Feels like its on auto pilot for now, he's using the system that was plugged in through all levels of the program and it will probably apply until we hire the TD and the head coach. I hope for there to be flexibility as well, I get that generally successful teams have some sort of set up they run down through the programs, but I like having a team that is more flexible in terms of approach too and I hope they can have a middle ground between the principles they want to drill down, with the ability to change, as they see fit, depending upon opponent and situation. I think we saw that a teeny bit during Berhalter's tenure (late '19, and at times in qualifying and even against the Netherlands and England, didn't play them exactly the same way as Wales and Iran, but I want more of that, rather than rarities with it).

I feel compelled to point out that:
    • Our last coach did run a 4231 in both the June window and in the last part of the Netherlands match, mostly with Aaronson in the midfield role. It had varied success.
    • We also ran in the 2019 GC Final against Mexico with Pulisic there.
    • People seem very much to not just want a 4231 but a 4231 very specifically with Gio Reyna, who was hurt for much of this span and/or acting immaturely
I am sure we will see versions of a 4231, but it's a little silly to saw we haven't seen them. We just didn't see Gio there, and I'd bet that a big reason for that is that he was hurt for much of the end of the cycle.

Hosting Copa America and the World Cup makes the USMNT job far more appealing than it normally would be. Hope the fed swings for the fences.

Personally I would prefer that we avoid bigoted states but that would mean that there are no states that would be acceptable. I've spent time (some felt like jail time) in every state except N. Dakota and a few of the "New England" little states. I have not found one that was without bigotry and in most you would not have to look far or deeply to have that bigotry pop up.

However that is not a good reason, from a soccer standpoint, to avoid a given state. But overt or legislated bigotry, like found in Florida and Texas and a few others is more than a little concerning.

But the main consideration should be the ability to have good facilities and relative ease of travel and looking at the states that keep getting mentioned the only one that make any sense is Texas. It suffers a bit on the "ease of travel" part but it does have a lot of great existing facilities and it seems that its "politics" may get straightened out in a few years, maybe.

In actuality I would prefer a more easily accessible location for our European players but most of those are either too cool or much too expensive. Northern Florida might work but it is actually hard to justify.

Maybe we could take over Bermuda. That would solve, or at least reduce, travel problems for most of our European based players (assuming that airport facilities are adequate) and have the added benefit of almost always being warm. If we built a covered facility we could even avoid most weather issues.

But that is not going to happen either.

It is unfortunate that so much politics enters into the selection process for every soccer related decision that we take but it does and, in order to offend nobody (or everybody) we may need several training and management facilities scattered all over.

Earnie's family went back to Holland some time ago. He really does want to spend more time with family, I'm sure. The PSV job is great. Good luck to him.

You can't get more central than DFW. Direct flights to all over the world (like Atlanta) but less crime.

Soccer museum is there, PGA headquarters is there, and US Youth Soccer HQ.

I know this is off subject, but in a perfect world who would you place as the best #10 in the USMNT?

I have been thinking about it the last few days after watching the Serbian game and thinking what that game needed was a true 10 to really open things up but when you look at the entire pool I wonder who the best "10" would be.

I feel like Miami is the best location. Lots of flights to Europe, warm weather year round, and easy to get to most CONCACAF countries.

If you’re worried long term Miami will be underwater, than you can do Orlando which has similar advantages, but less non stop flights to Europe.
