He didn’t do anything else of note. That was a great ball, but he is about 9th on the depth chart at that position.

They knew he would have little role in Wayne's plans. If they waited until the offseason to trade him the bargaining position for him would be much diminished - hurting the team but also Julian.

What is it about Wayne's system that there is no place for a guy who is better than average in MLS at getting crosses into the box. Wingback is not a position he utilizes?

Gressel needs a few moments and a bit of space to get his killer crosses in. Something you don't get much of in a right wing position, where you have to beat a defender on the dribble to get free. Much easier if the guy ahead of you has pulled the defender and you can have a moment before a winger from the other team shuts you down. However, Gressel's one vs. one defending isn't good enough to play right back. He benefited from a third central defender who could cover for him. So Rooney doesn't want to play a 3-4-3 or a 3-5-2 that would allow Gressel the outside wing back position.

Gressel did his best for DC when Najar and Arriola were working with him. They created space and options for each other. Unsurprising this was the year Julian looked great for us and then his production dropped due to Najar's injuries and Arriola being gone...

Am I to understand that Bill Hamid is an unsigned free agent at age 32?

It was a decent cross but the lack of defensive pressure was comical. He had all day.

He's a pretty average MLS starter for me but not really a difference maker.

You understand correctly. I mentioned this earlier in the pre-season thread. No mention of tryouts, Euro windows are closing, etc. I wonder if he is going to retire. He's had a few nicks along the way, and no way any team will offer him a salary close to what he got at DCU. New infant at home, settling into family life. Maybe he's decided to move on.

Kevin Paredes scored for Wolfsburg in a 2-1 defeat at Werder Bremen. It was a very nice strike.

I saw a tweet on his Twitter account last week that he said he's willing to play anywhere in the world, but it appears to have been deleted.

This may be the first time he has been on the pitch since he joined them. I believe he had zero minutes until this match.

Wrong! He came on as a sub a week ago and had an assist.

This was his 10th appearance this season. He has come on in all three games since the restart after winter break.

He started on 10/22, came off injured, and missed the last 4 games before the break with injury.

My bad. It is Griffin Yow who, I believe, hasn't seen the pitch since his transfer.to Westerlo FC in Belgium. Paredes is getting minutes.

For all the ballyhoo about "play Yow and Nyeman" it is instructive that Yow can't see the pitch or even get on the subs bench for a 2nd Division Belgian team and Nyeman is a "guest" at the RSL camp. The fact that neither Olsen, Losada nor Rooney favored them might mean they just weren't that good.
